"The Road I'm On" Miami fic

Darkness, Darkness
Be my pillow
Take my hand
And let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow
In the silence of your deep

Darkness, Darkness
Hide my yearning
For the things I cannot be
Keep my mind from constant turning
Toward the things I cannot see now
Things I cannot see now
Things I cannot see

They had been on the docked cargo ship for nearly an hour when Horatio received a phone call.

“Caine,” he answered, still shining his flashlight at the floor.

“Horatio, are you with Yelina?” Calleigh asked.

“I am,” Horatio answered, looking at Yelina as she approached him.
“Some men are here looking for her. Eric is talking to them now,” Calleigh continued.

Horatio glanced at Yelina, unable to read her expression in the dark.

“Names?” Horatio asked.

“Brazilian officials, they say they want to question her--what’s going on?” Calleigh spoke patiently.

“What?” Yelina asked, moving closer to him.

Horatio sighed and told her.

“Where is Ray Jr.?” Yelina asked.

Horatio frowned and asked Calleigh about him.

“Ryan’s with him in the lab, he’s safe,” Calleigh answered.

Horatio quickly explained the situation to her.

“And these people are terrorists?” Calleigh questioned.

“We can’t take any chances,” Horatio explained slowly.

Yelina watched Horatio. Every few seconds he glanced at her. What was going on?

(a short update, I know...but there will be more later :))

I'll fill those canyons in your soul
Like a river lead you home
And I'll walk a step behind
In the shadows so you shine
Just ask it will be done
And I will prove my love

Horatio closed his cell phone and sighed.

“Horatio,” Yelina spoke, her tone light.

Horatio looked at the flashlight in his hand, shining at nothing particular now.

“Yelina, you need to be somewhere else… somewhere safe.” Horatio spoke.

He slowly tilted his head to look at her, and see what effect his words had. It was hard seeing Yelina in the gloominess, but he strained his eyes trying.

“Horatio, we’ve been over this,” Yelina sighed.

Horatio tightened his lips and shuffled his feet.

“Yelina,” he spoke, his voice on edge. “The reason I sent you off to Brazil is because I wanted you safe.”

Yelina scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest.

“Excuse me?” she frowned. “You ‘sent’ me? Horatio, I would’ve never left if I hadn’t wanted to go. You didn’t make me do anything.”

Horatio gave a small smile.

“I know,” he said, stepping closer to read her expression. “And it’s definitely not working right now.”

Yelina nodded and tossed her curls over her shoulder, not aware that Horatio caught a scent of her hair.
She needed to calm down, think clearly.

“There are some men looking for you. You can't ignore that and be out in the open,” Horatio spoke.

Yelina nodded but he knew that she wasn’t giving in. She’d changed so much since the last time he was her: being more stubborn her main character alteration.

“And these men won’t hurt you. Is that what you think?” Yelina asked, not looking at him.

“I’ll risk it,” Horatio said, changing his footing.

Yelina nodded and looked back to him. From the look in her eye he already knew what she was going to say.

“I’ll risk it, too. We’ll risk it together. I’ve had enough of being left in the dark, Horatio. It’s sickening. Don’t make me go through it again, “Yelina nodded, stepping closer to him.

Behind them they heard clapping and they both whipped around to see him—The Snake.

“Brings tears to my eyes,” Stetler laughed, wiping fake tears from his eyes.

Horatio shone his flashlight at Rick’s chest.

“So you’re the Mercedes,” Horatio said, raising his eyebrows.

Yelina looked from Rick to Horatio.

“You followed us?” Yelina asked.

She felt like throwing her flashlight at him but decided it a bad idea. He wasn’t worth the energy it took to throw it.

“Where’ve you been all this time? Mr. Matchstick here locked you away for himself?” Rick smiled.

Horatio glared at him.

“This isn’t Internal Affairs’ business. Who’re you working for?” Horatio asked.

Rick kept his eyes on Yelina.

“What makes you think I’m not doing this solo? After all, Yelina and I were involved once… and you two sure have looked extra cozy tonight.” Rick smirked.

Yelina gave a grin.

“Oh come on, spare us.” Yelina said, raising her eyebrows. “You’ve never given a damn.”

Horatio remained silent. There was definitely someone he was working for. Maybe someone called Rick, after he met up him at the Port Records office. How else would’ve he known to stay put that Yelina had returned and was coming there? Did his being there have anything do with what happened in Brazil?
They were about to find out. Rick reached for his gun.

“I’d be careful,” Horatio spoke, pulling out his Glock 9mm before Rick could touch his.
Rick looked awe struck for a moment then began laughing.

“Yeah, you should.” Rick smiled, looking past them.

Yelina and Horatio exchanged confused expressions.

“There are four men right behind the two of you with guns. You guys are coming with us,” Rick smirked again, looking more snakelike then ever.

No matter what they tell us
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach us
What we believe is true

No matter what they call us
However they attack
No matter where they take us
We'll find our own way back

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know I'll love forever
I know, no matter what

Horatio kept his gun aimed at Stetler.

"People know we're here," Yelina spoke.

Rick shrugged.

"People do go missing, Yelina. Like you did," Rick smiled.

Horatio glared at Rick.

Yelina turned to look behind them, trying to spot the men Rick mentioned. It was too dark to tell.

"See anyone?" Horatio asked.

"No, not enough light," Yelina answered.

Horatio nodded.

"Okay, guys. Show em I'm not bluffing," Rick called.

Yelina watched the shadows while Horatio concentrated on Stetler. Unfortunately, he was right, four men--with guns.

They came forward, their footsteps light despite their size. All were stocky, young, and with no kind features.

"Don’t be a hero. Drop it," one spoke to Horatio, sounding German.

Horatio tilted his head and Yelina touched his arm. He couldn't help but look to her and find her eyes in the dimness.

Rick held out his hand.

"Come on Horatio." Stetler spoke, walking closer. “No ones going to get hurt.”

Horatio looked back to him, still debating on what to do.

Yelina watched him closely. What was running through his head? She knew that he was aware of their situation and the odds against them. There was an odd expression on his face, one she couldn’t understand.

“Alright,” Horatio nodded, holding the gun out.

Rick snatched it quickly.

“Yours too, sweetheart,” he smirked at Yelina.

She watched Horatio as she removed her gun from her holster. He nodded at her and a small smile played on his lips.

“There,” Yelina growled.

Rick pulled the gun from her hand.

“This is going to be an interesting night,” he smiled.

“Oh… yeah,” Horatio nodded.

MEANWHILE,

Calleigh entered the lab where Ryan was talking to Ray Junior.

“So, you have any animals--a dog?” Ryan asked, leaning against the counter where the equipment sat.

“No. My Mom says we might get one later,” Ray Jr., shrugged.

Ryan nodded and looked at his feet. He really had no idea what to talk about.

“Okay, if you did have a dog…what would you name it?” Ryan smiled.

Ray Jr., frowned and looked at Calleigh as she stood behind Ryan.

“Um, can I go now?” he asked sighing.

Ryan turned to see Calleigh and smiled.

“Thank God you’re here. I was one question shy on looking like a nerd,” Ryan sighed. “Are those men gone?”

Calleigh smirked and nodded. “Yeah, I gave Horatio and Yelina a heads up.”

Ryan ran a hand through his hair and bobbed his head.

Calleigh then walked to Ray Jr., and crouched down to be at eye level with him.

“You’re Mom and Horatio will be back later,” she smiled. “Your Mom asked for us to stay with you until then. That’s not so bad is it?”

Ray Jr., looked at Ryan and sighed.

“Not really,” he shrugged.

Calleigh smiled and tousled his hair.

“That a boy,” Ryan smiled.

BACK AT PORT…

Horatio and Yelina got into the back of Rick’s car. One of the mysterious men drove while Rick sat in the passenger seat.

“You guys really do make a cute couple. I mean, I was rooting for you two to get together,” Rick rambled. “Hell, even a blind man can see the sparks flyin’ off of you two.”

Horatio bowed his head as if to be looking at his hands; examining the contents of the floorboard. He had noticed that it wasn’t Stetler’s department issued vehicle. Rick was using his own car.

“Rick, for once, could you stop talking,” Yelina started, noticing what Horatio was doing.

Rick smirked.

“Come on! You choose him over me? I’m the better man here!” Rick roared.

Horatio chuckled.

“Big words,” Horatio spoke slowly.

Rick ran a hand through his hair.

“You’ve got smarts, Caine. I got the gun. Which one wins?” Rick laughed.

“We’ll see, won’t we?” Horatio said, tilting his head once more.

Yelina looked at Horatio again, sensing something in his voice. He was showing amazing composure during all this. Exceeding even his own limits… she just wished she knew what his plan was—

Horatio surprised her by quickly leaning forward and grabbing a crowbar from beside his foot.

I don't wanna be lonely no more
I don't wanna have to pay for this
I don't want to know the lover at my door
Is just another heartache on my list

I don't wanna be angry no more
You know I could never stand for this
So when you tell me that you love me know for sure
I don't want to be lonely anymore

It all happened quickly. One moment Rick was sniggering like a weasel and the next moment he was unconscious, and Horatio had Rick's gun before the driver knew what was going on. He aimed it at him.

"Don't be a hero," Horatio spoke--mocking the mans words--as he reached for the gun at his hip.

The man held his hands up and Horatio handed the gun to Yelina while he leaned over to check Rick's pulse.

"He alive?" Yelina asked, not taking her eyes off of the driver.

"Mm-hmm," Horatio answered, before stepping out of the car.

Yelina held out her hand and the driver reluctantly handed her his weapon.

"Better to die now. When they get ahold of him--," the man scoffed.

Horatio opened the drivers door and pulled the man out. Yelina was suprised at what strength he showed in doing so. The man was a good 6-7 inches taller then him and built like an Olympic swimmer.

"Get the guns," Horatio spoke, tossing her the keys.

Yelina caught them and placed Rick's gun between her shirt and her pants before walking to the trunk. The only light that was offered was that of a buzzing street lamp on the empty road; the moon being hidden behind clouds.

"You have a name?" Yelina asked the German driver as she opened the trunk.

Horatio drew handcuffs from his belt as he waited for the answer.

"Vlad Milokovitch," he answered.

Horatio secured the handcuffs on his wrists and turned Vlad around as Yelina returned with their guns and cell phones.

"Where are your friends?" Horatio asked. "Why aren't they following us, hmm?"

Vlad smiled a toothless smile, making Horatio shift his footing.

"Vlad," Horatio began, jaw clenched. "This is not the day to mess with me."

Vlad leaned his head forward.

"They've got business elsewhere," he grinned.

Yelina and Horatio exchanged angry expressions and Horatio grabbed the mans collar.

"Where?" Horatio asked acidly.

Yelina looked from Vlad to Horatio. There was something extra intense in Horatio's voice...maybe he sensed what she thought she did.

"You thing all the guns were for you two?!" Vlad shrugged.

Yelina stepped forward. Horatio glanced at her.

"Miami Dade Crime Lab," Vlad finished slowly. "We know they're involved, so..."

Horatio took a deep breath as Yelina quickly started using her cell phone.

"It's dead," Yelina exclaimed, trying both their phones. "Both phones are dead!"

Horatio turned to her confused. He checked them then sighed.

"Okay, we need to be calm here Yelina." Horatio spoke.

Not only was he talking to her but also to himself. It was taking all of his willpower to not take it out on the toothless Vlad.

"We'll drive there," Yelina nodded.

Horatio agreed and placed Vlad in the back of the car. Both he and Yelina knew that Rick's car wasn't very reliable. Would it even start?
