Survivor? We Call It Camping ~ Canadian Thread #5

I heard about it too. That's so unfortunate for the victim but probably twice as hard on the witnessess. :(

It was just so...strange, that guy. I'm kind of interested as to why he just decided to stab someone and decapitate them on a bus full of people but I don't think any explanation he/someone else gives will ever fully explain that. :wtf:

there is no explanation..you can't rationalize it. Some people are just violent psychos and there isn't anything you can do to stop it. It was also mentioned in the news that he disemboweled the victim and ate some parts.

Well to everyone in Ontario that is off today I hope you're enjoying your Simcoe day :) We close the store today as there will be next to no customers for us. The neighbourhood where our store is disappears to the cottage on the weekends so why waste money by opening.

Oh that's what day it is! I knew it was a holiday, just not sure which one. :p I don't get a day off, though. I work at a pool and we're still running. We were open on Canada Day too.

I dated myself by calling the day Simcoe Day. It was originally named after John Graves Simcoe who was the first Lt Governor of Ontario. It's called Civic Day in the Toronto area now. Not all parts of the province have it off and it is really just an excuse for the post office, banks and office type businesses to have a day off. Most if not all retail places are open. Mind you they are usually only opened 10-6.

so on global news tonight they had a story on the winner, or loser if you prefer, of the biggest speeding ticket this weekend. some idiot was going 220 km/h  i thought those numbers were just on the dial for show, never thought someone would try and go that high  i wonder what goes through these peoples minds when they speed so much. even when i get up to 130 on the 401 (which doesnt happen often!) i think 'eeee! need to slow down!!' wonder what excuse he gave the officer who pulled him over?

What amazes me is that people in Ontario are not getting the message about speeding. The OPP now have planes up and they nabbed 3 people on the 401 out by the Northumberland area of the province. They nabbed them within a hour. The OPP also got 2 American visitors on Friday while they were speeding on the 407. Drivers get the message the OPP and other police forces will nab you.

Ontario isn't the only place where people aren't getting the message when it comes to speeding. Here where I am (Newfoundland), there is some major construction going on, on one of the main artery's heading into the city, and I'd say there is signage posted up several kilometers before the actual site as big as life, yet people are still violating the rules. The cops were out in full force the other day during the morning rush hour and dished out over 50 tickets...from speeding to ignoring the road signs etc. It's a real concern for the safety of the workers. When will people realize the potential danger they put themselves and many others in when they travel through these zones? Personally I think it's ridiculous! But then, I am convinced that most people here haven't a clue when it comes to the rules of the road and how to handle themselves when driving.

As for the bus incident...I think it's absolutely appalling that someone could actually bring themselves to do something as disgraceful as what happened. Down here, we just got over a murder where the boyfriend killed and dismembered his girlfriend then stuffed her body parts in a suitcase and tossed it out into a wooded area just behind the house they were living in...now this. My heart goes out to the young man's family, friends and the other members that laid witness to such horror.

Well as you may have heard Toronto is having it's wettest summer in over 20 years. The record for June 1 to August 31 broke sometime on Saturday. The previous record was 335.9mm in 1986. We're at 354.2mm and counting. We've also had the wettest year in 70 years. From January to August 9 we've had 705mm of precipitation. The previous record was 679.3mm in 1945. Who knows what the rest of the year will bring

^^ That's crazy.

*sigh* We have another crazy in Canada. In my city, we have Harris Park, and in front of 3 little boys, an old man beat a goose with a rock until it was all bloody and then held it's head underwater until it died. :( And then he held it up and yelled, "I hit it with a rock!" like he was boasting. I wanted to cry when I heard about that. How someone can be so cruel to animals, I don't know. :(

yeah, it is pretty wet, i am from vancouver and i haven't seen this much rain in the summer time before.

Is everyone ok from the explosion? that was messed!

I didn't have any problems with the explosion per say. I don't live in Toronto so I didn't have any effects that way. While driving to work on Sunday I couldn't get on the 401 westbound. The signs above the highways had no message to say that I couldn't go that way :scream: I really shouldn't be mad but it would have saved me about 5-10 minutes in my travel time if they had the signs saying closed. Now in all fairness with the MTO offices being effected by the blast there was probably no one there to change the message on the signs. It was the weirdest site though to see no traffic what so ever on the west bound 401. I don't think I've ever seen it that empty. Customers were saying that the 400 had signs saying the 401 was closed as people came down from Barrie.

According to headlines in today's on line papers it looks like Stephen Harper will call for an election on Sunday. What are your thoughts on this. Good, bad or indifferent. What do you think the issues should be or will be. Of the 4 party leaders who do think will be a better Prime Minister?

Even if your not eligible to vote lets hear what you have to say.

ok, i dont understand how everything works and all, but why call an election before he has to? he could have had another two years right? not that i mind, i wouldnt be hurt if he got booted out. im just not a conservative person, and its too bad our parties are divided that way. i guess it is too much to ask to have a 'we will do what this country needs and not what it doesnt' party.

also i really didnt like all the election propaganda i got in the mail from the conservatives saying "look!! harper will give parents $25 a week for child care!! and stephane dion wants to take it away!!" i kept looking for the fine print that said "ps the liberals plan is actually better than ours but dont worry about it, $25!!!" but it was never there...

rick mercer just needs to run for prime minister, then id be happy

so last night after one of the vet club meetings some people were talking about the young man who was murdered on the greyhound bus. apparently, the westboro baptist church wanted to protest his funeral. cuz you know, canada is evil, and allows same sex marriage, so we deserved it  they didnt do it, but it makes my day whenever i hear about people standing up to the wbc and counter protesting.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand that either. But I'm taking a poli-sci class this semester, so maybe the prof can explain it
