About the vomit-comet thing, that wasn't Ryan being snarky or anti-social. He's afraid of heights, but doesn't want to admit it. A lot of girls might admit it, but guys are different. They feel if they admit their phobias, they'll be seen as weaker. Ryan in the crane (in "Working Crew" last season) for example. He didn't want to go up there, but he did and was nervous the whole time. He actually yelled out when the thing shook. Cal asked what was wrong and Ryan made up some excuse rather than admit that he's afraid of heights. So when Travers asked why he didn't go with Walter and Jesse, he made it sound like he had motion sickness as opposed to fear of heights because motion sickness is in his mind, more acceptable and doesn't diminish his masculinity (as he thinks a fear of heights would).
I know a lot of people probably forgot about the scene in WC and the writers of this show rarely reference anything from the past (especially for Ryan). So it probably came as such a shock that they had a small point of continuity [in this episode] that some people may not have recognized it as continuity. I know I was shocked and when I saw the preview and only Walter and Jesse were there, I wondered why Ryan didn't get to go. At that time, I didn't realize that the thing J&W were in would actually be in the air. I thought it'd turn out to be some kind of simulator at the space station. I mean, there is a space station in FL, right?
About the scene with the suspect:
Mac, Calleigh, Horatio, Danny, Nick, Cath, Grissom, Sara, Stella too have at one time or another gotten snarky with a suspect/killer. Even Speed was guilty of it a time or two. And Aiden and Warrick. And even normally sweet, patient Greg (remember Mrs. James? LOL!). And compared to scenes I've seen of the other CSIs getting snarky with suspects, what Ryan said was very very very tiny/minor in comparrisson.
I think Ryan talking to the suspect/one of the killers that way is fine. I personally love it when the CSIs get snarky with a suspect/killer, especially if they are guilty and/or extremely cocky (which that guy definitely was). Unless they're preaching to them or something like Mac often does (not that that bothers me a whole lot, but it does sometimes lol). I don't think it was bitchy, just snarky and sarcastic and hilarious. ALL of the CSIs have done this to one suspect at one time or another. None of them are immune. It comes with the job. Sometimes with some of these killers, it takes all a CSI has not to reach out and strangle the life out of them. Being sarcastic/snarky with them is the lesser of the two evils.
The suspect was being way unreasonable. A man died in that ship for crying out loud. He made himself look even more suspicious by having a problem with it. An innocent person would have said, "take whatever you need to solve the crime and clear my/this company's name" to which someone with authority might have replied "if we have to destroy anything, the city will reimburse you". But because that guy got cocky and all "you have no right to do this", it was justified completely. That guy was a creep who cared about nothing but money and didn't give a crap if one of his paying customers had to die to save his own pathetic life (bastard). So, I had no problem with Ryan being snarky with him.
I don't think Ryan was near as snarky this time as he was that time when that drug dealer killed that woman cause he thought she was a cop when she refused to do drugs with him. Ryan got all up in his face and was practically spitting nails as he said "you know why she didn't want to do drugs with you? SHE WAS PREGNANT!" And he looked like he wanted to snap the guy's neck. That too was highly justified, but that was eons (aka seasons) ago. So, I don't really think this is a new thing... its just that Ryan's getting more scenes (for the most part) this season than he has in past seasons.
It is pretty clear that he thinks Walter and Jesse have "intruded" on the seniority pecking order in the lab.
I disagree with this. I think he thinks that Jesse is hiding something and he's just curious, he's not really pressuring him for info. As for Walter, I think he was just teasing him when he said "a boy made a switch of shifts and now thinks he knows everything". It was sort of Ryan's long-winded way of saying "okay, smarty-pants"... but it came off as playful and teasing to me. I think he likes both guys because they didn't come in judging him. While he grew to have a somewhat friendship with Eric, things were a bit bumpy at first. So, Ryan was probably expecting the new guys to treat him badly and when they didn't, it took Ryan by surprise. But I don't think he resents them at all. Technically, Jesse would have more seniority because he's been on job (at a different place, yes, but still) for longer than Ryan has. I don't think Walter in anyway messes with the "pecking order" on the team. I think he's placed in basically the newbie status and I don't think that Ryan has a problem with that. I do think he gets along with Walter slightly better than Jesse. But with most brothers, the younger ones get along better because they look at their older brother as more of an authority figure... like next in line next to the parents.
I have often wondered If Ryan came from a background where perhaps the father figure was overly critical,or perhaps had an older sibling that was great at everything, which could also make him over ambitious and sensitive.
I could definitely see that being the case... him living in big bro's shadow. Or even possibly a big sister. Maybe he made some mistakes as a kid and one or both parents constantly asked him "why can't you be more like your brother/sister?" That would definitely explain him being so eager to please. And his snarkiness could be a defense mechanisim. Like maybe he felt personally insulted by the guy complaining about the ship and the sarcasm just slipped out as a defense mechanisim.
