“Daddy, wake up.” Maria Delko jumped on her parents' bed and for a moment Eric felt as though he had been transported back through time. He opened his eyes and stared at her. Her shiny, black hair was brushed into a ponytail and there was make-up on her face. He resisted the urge to tell her to wipe it off, that she didn't need it.
“I'll be up in a minute.” Eric said, hoping he could put off his daughter's departure.
“Daddy, I need you to get me to the airport. My plane leaves at ten.”
“Okay, I'm up.” He said, getting out of bed. “Get out of here and let me get dressed.”
“Okay.” She left the room and shut the door behind her.
Eric felt like he wanted to cry as soon as she shut the door. Soon, she would be shutting the car door and getting on a plane to Los Angeles. He wiped the tears that came to his eyes and got dressed quickly before walking out of the bedroom and down the steps.
“About time you got up.” His wife, Natalia, said, a knowing smile on her lips. “You can't keep her here. She has to spread her wings, too.”
“Okay, Daddy, I'm ready.” Maria burst into the room, smiling. “Love you Mom.” She kissed her mother on the cheek. “Come on Daddy.”
The ride to the airport wasn't long enough for Eric because soon they were in the airport's parking lot. He helped get her luggage out. After that was all set, Maria walked to the hallway that led to the plane. He turned to leave but heard his daughter's quick footsteps and turned around eyes.
“I love you Daddy.” She whispered, giving him a long hug before walking back to the doors and into the plane.
“I love you too.” He whispered, tears in his eyes.
