Pluto - is it a planet?

CSI Level One
I was just watching the news whilst I was on here and the topic came on about Pluto - scientists are now meeting to decide whether Pluto should be classed as a planet or not.

I looked up this link and thought it might interest some of you:

I personally think that Pluto should stay as a planet, it is my favourite planet of them all!

Do you guys have any opinions?

Um, sure it should stay a planet. Though my favorite planet is Jupiter, did a report on it in high school.

:D Shall refrain from making any inappropriate Uranus jokes.

Man, I'd really be sorry to see Pluto drop off the planet list. I've grown up with that planet!

I think I like the idea of re-classification for planets, and making it a sub category, as opposed to nixing it altogether.

KEEP PLUTO! :D

Pluto is a planet, and should stay as such. I don't mind if they add more planets, but almost everyone learned that Pluto is a planet and it would be disasterious if that changed.

There's an asteroid that's between Mars and Jupiter (or Jupiter and Saturn, can't remember for sure) that's bigger than Pluto.

As far as people having learned it's a planet, I'm sorry, but science is always changing. In science nothing is ever proved, but only supported.

And I would like to know what the definition of a planet is. Is it based off size, orbit, distance from a star,...?

I'd think they classify planets based off like what chemicals, gases and such, that they contain in their atmospheres. Isn't that was makes them different from random meteors/comets/asteriods? Don't think it's based solely off size. :D

Well isn't Pluto just a ball of ice? :p

But they did also just find moons surrounding Pluto, which means it has gravitational pull. Doesn't that prove it's a planet? Don't quote me on it though, I'm not that smart and I don't work for NASA. :p

-Of course large asteroids have graviational pull as well. *sigh* It's mind boggling.

i definatley think it should be!!!!
i mean it has been a planet since i was like born...and so if it wasnt a planet...then i would get SO SO confused!

Did I hear right? Did Pluto moon someone? What would Mickey say about that?

Anyway, here are a some definitions of a planet I found on thw web:

From Wikipedia:
A planet is generally considered to be a relatively large mass of accreted matter in orbit around a star. A mass that becomes massive enough to undergo nuclear reactions is considered a star, not a planet. Based on historical consensus, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) lists nine planets in our solar system. However, since the term "planet" has no precise scientific definition, many astronomers contest that figure. Some say it should be lowered to eight by removing Pluto from the list, while others claim it should be raised to ten or even higher depending on how planets are categorized.

From American Heritage Dictionary:
1. A nonluminous celestial body larger than an asteroid or comet, illuminated by light from a star, such as the sun, around which it revolves. In the solar system there are nine known planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
2. One of the seven celestial bodies, Mercury, Venus, the moon, the sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, visible to the naked eye and thought by ancient astronomers to revolve in the heavens about a fixed Earth and among fixed stars.
3. One of the seven revolving astrological celestial bodies that in conjunction with the stars are believed to influence human affairs and personalities.

From Encyclopedia Britannica:
planet - (from Greek planetes, "wanderers"), any relatively large natural body that revolves in an orbit around the Sun or around some other star and that is not radiating energy from internal nuclear fusion reactions. The term planet has no precise scientific definition.

11 posts and no one has made the two obvious jokes yet?

I always felt that because Pluto orbits differently than the others, then maybe it is a moon orbiting around something else than the Sun. They have originally classified some other things as "tenth planets", (ok, 3 obvious jokes now that I can think of), only to say that they are not actually planets, so I don't know.

^People also learnt back in the old days that the Earth is at the center of the universe and the Sun and other celestial objects go around it (Geocentric), but later found out it's that the Sun is at the center of the Universe and/or the Solar System (Heliocentric).

That finding wasn't disaster. Everything new information will be adapted, it just needs more time. And when it's proven well, people will accept it.

Heck, we used to have 12 provinces and we were the last ones to learn all those 12 and it felt like world crashed when they reduced it to 5. But nowadays, who remembers?

Anyways, to me Pluto is a planet as long as it's well proven that it is not. I mean, when I read more articles about it.

This is a subject that will always change in science.

You've got some goods points there Ducky, I can see how finding out that the planet you live on is not the centre of the universe may be a bit more devistating than scientists deciding that Pluto isn't a planet. It is not as if we are going to go live on Pluto! ( :p to CatherineWillows )

I'm really happy that I opend this thread because now I can see how many other people love Pluto as much as I do! :D

I just feel that it would be really sad if it were to be taken of the solar system as a planet after so many people have learnt about it and have seemingly fallen in love with it!
