Life before Vegas- GSR fic

MissMurder

Lab Technician
Chapter 1

The night air was crisp as winter had begun to rip its way through Las Vegas. Crime had also decreased, it seemed to be packing its bags for the holidays.

Gil Grissom, the graveyard shift supervisor, walked down the halls of the crime lab. With nothing to do, he was becoming frustrated. The 'Holiday spirit' hadn't arrived in him yet, it never did.

He bumped into Catherine Willows. She was acting joyful, it sickened him:

"Oh hey, sorry Gil. I didn't mean that."

"Of course you didn't mean it, nobody means it."

"Hey whoa, attitude alert Gil. What's your problem?" Catherine was getting angry now.

"Nothing." With that Grissom walked off.

He is always a jerk at Christmas time, Catherine thought and then continued her trip to Warrick Brown's lab.

Grissom slammed the door to his office when he arrived. He was sure that the whole lab heard the slam, and that the questioning employees would be arriving any second.

He was right. A slender, tall brunette knocked the door gently. Grissom caught her scent, the apple from her shampoo drifted up his nose. He knew that could only be one woman- Sara Sidle.

Chapter 2

Sara didn't understand why Grissom had slammed his door, so she decided to ask him. She walked closer and sat on the visitors chair:

"Yes Sara, what is it?"

"Nothing, I just wanted to know why you had slammed the door. It's just not like you to be breaking the door down, that's all."

"It was an accident, ok?"

"Alright, may I ask what is really wrong with you?" Sara pressed on with a gentle, caring tone.

Grissom knew he couldn't resist that tone of her voice, "The whole lab is in the 'Christmas spirit' I on the other hand, am acting like Scrooge or the Grinch, totally not into it."

"Why not?" Sara asked, still adding that same tone to her voice.

"Sara, you know as well as I do. We both have relatively the same Christmas each year. We are alone: no family, our friends are all with their families, we are stuck in our empty homes, wondering if the next year will be the same. Which we both know it will be."

"You want to be like Catherine don't you?"

"What?" Grissom didn't understand that question.

"You want that honor to watch your flesh and blood open the gifts you bought them. For them to say, 'Daddy can we leave milk and cookies for Santa'"

"Yes." Grissom whispered and placed his head in his hands.

"So do I."

"Really?"

"Yes, I don't have long before I can't become a mother. I'm pushing 35, and I know I'm not gonna find the father in the next few weeks, months, hell even years. By the time I do, I won't be able to have children."

"I understand."

"Anyway, what happened?" Sara asked, changing the subject.

"I was in a...mood, so I slammed the door."

"Ahh, ok. Oh, I'd watch where you are going. The boys are hanging mistletoe all around the lab." Sara stood and walked to the door.

"Sara?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks."

"No problem." With that, Sara left the office.

Chapter 3

Sara walked down the hall, headed for the breakroom. When she arrived, Greg Sanders was waiting for her.

He blocked the doorway, Sara tried to pass him, but failed:

"Greg, let me through!" Sara barked.

"Nope, look up."

Sara did so, there was mistletoe, "Ahh, no way Greggo."

"Sara, it's mistletoe. C'mon, just a little peck?" Greg begged.

"No Greg."

"Fine." Greg sounded defeated, he moved out of her way and Sara walked into the room.

Sara sat at the table and read over an old casefile. Something that was unable to be solved. She had beaten herself up about it so many times. Warrick Brown and Nick Stokes entered the room and noticed her:

"Hey girl, when are you gonna leave that case alone? We couldn't do anything about it."

"I know, but we promised the family."

"I know Sar, I know we did. But they know we did everything we could." Nick added.

"Yeah, I suppose."

At that moment, Grissom entered the room. He stayed away from Sara, he was acting suspicious to Nick and Warrick:

"Hey Gris, what are you going to be doing for the Christmas holiday, huh?" asked Greg.

"The usual Greg, nothing." Grissom then left. Sara soon followed.

Nick, Warrick and Greg looked at each other. They shrugged and sat down:

"Do you think those two are acting weird lately?" asked Nick.

"Weird? It's just them Nick, it's just Grissom and Sara." answered Warrick.

Then Warrick and Greg left the room. Nick was there alone. He sighed. He caught sight of Catherine:

"Hey Cath!" he called.

Catherine stopped and walked to the door, "Yeah Nicky?"

"Do you think Grissom and Sara are acting strange?"

"Well...yeah a little. Sara did seem...different earlier, and Grissom was really snappy at me."

"Wanna conduct a private investigation of the two?"

"By doing what exactly Nicky?" Catherine questioned, Nick was up to something.

"Well, uhh...I don't know yet, but something."

"How about, we search Gil's office? He seems to be hiding there a lot. He always does at Christmas." Catherine suggested.

"Yeah, ok."

Nick and Catherine has smiles on their faces as they walked out of the breakroom and down to Grissom's office.

Chapter 4

When Nick and Catherine arrived at Grissom's office, they were surprised to find it empty. They entered and began their search.

They raided the drawers and cupbourds, trying to find anything that would cause Grissom to stay in his office around Christmas:

"Bingo, got something." Nick said as he pulled out a shoe box.

"What? What is it?"

"A shoe box."

"Open it then."

Nick and Catherine walked up to the desk and placed the box on it. Nick removed the lid, shock crossed their faces at what they saw.

They saw a day organiser, poems and many other things, but what caught their attention was a strip of 3 photographs. The kind you get at a carnival. The interesting thing was the people in the photographs: Grissom and Sara- kissing.

Not just friendly kissing either:

"Whoa, maybe...I'm speechless." Catherine couldn't get a sentence out.

"Did Grissom even give you a clue to this."

"NO!" Catherine's voice was loud and stunned.

"Well, he obviously doesn't regret it, or he wouldn't keep this stuff."

"I think he misses her. Think about it, Christmas- the time for family. He doesn't have one. They both don't. He hides here to remember the past."

"What is the day planner for?" Nick asked, confused.

"I've heard some people use them as diaries." Catherine grabbed it. " Listen to this, I met a gorgeous young woman today, Sara Sidle, very bright and beautiful. "

"Man, love at first sight."

"It gets better, listen, Sara and I walked along the beach today, hand in hand. The waves soaked our feet, then Sara slipped, dragging me with her. I fell on top of her, we kissed for the first time. It was unbelieveable, there are no words to describe how it felt."

"Oh, gag me please."

"Nicky, it's romantic."

Nick made a gagging noise, "Yuck."

"Umm...it gets personal from here I won't read any further."

Nick snatched it, "Oh my god, no wonder he is depressed at Christmas."

"The poems are so romantic too. Oh, poor Gil."
