Interview: Rory Cochrane

CSI Files

Captain
Rory Cochrane has been with CSI: Miami since the show debuted in 2002, playing criminalist Tim Speedle, a level-headed professional who worked cases with a cool demeanor and a fierce determination. But in Monday night's season premiere, "Lost Son", Speedle was killed in the line of duty while investigating a shady jewelry shop with Horatio Caine. Cochrane sat down with CSI Files to tell us why he decided to leave the hit show and why he's unhappy with the way his character was dispatched.

CSI Files: So, the question that's on everyone's mind right now is, why did you decide to leave CSI: Miami?

Rory Cochrane: Doing a one-hour drama is very long. I'm originally from New York and my family's back here, and a lot of my friends. I felt [the show] was never-ending and the grind was a lot. It's nice being on a hit show and the viewers are very supportive, but I couldn't really take it anymore.

It's hard to sit there and complain when the pay is good and most people make what we make in an episode, in a year. It wasn't a money thing. I didn't like someone having control of my life for most of the year.

CSI Files: Were you happy with the way your character, Tim Speedle, was written out?

Yeah.

They should've had iMat the stalker kidnap him and carve him out in a gruesone cult-like scene.

This was a cool interview! It answered a lot of questions I had, and some I had guessed right on about why RC left the show. Some actors are OK with the demanding TV show production schedule, but he said he was not. I mean, who can blame the guy? One movie a year (and rarely two) was all he had done until 2002. That's like, working a month or two, then taking off 10. CSIM was the opposite schedule, and like he said, it felt like Groundhog Day and a grind.

Also, it seems like being different is what he thrives on. I mean, this is a guy who does mostly indie movies, prefers Italian motorcycles, doesn't really give a s*** about the Hollywood star machine, and (apparently) takes roles based on things other than how many zeroes will follow the 1 on his paycheck. And oh, yeah, he keeps coming back to Austin, Texas to make movies. That fact alone says it all for me. I lived near Austin for 37 years. So, I'm really surprised he even agreed to CSIM in the first place. It was a telling statement in his interview, "I had this agent at the time--I'm not working with him anymore...." Gee, wonder why? Betcha he never does TV again! So sad Speed's gone, though. He was the best thing about the show!! :(

^Yeah, it really doesn't sound like he's acting for the $$. I mean, I'm sure the paychecks don't suck, but it sounds like he chooses his projects based on quality, rather than how much he's getting paid.

Okay wow..this thread has been here for..forever and I don't even know if it will show up anymore, not like anyone wants to talk about this anymore but.. It doesn't sound like he is doing it for the moola like Top41 said. I'm just glad he's happier now and the interview did answer a lot of questions. Sorry for being an idiot for re-viving this thread

Well, I'm glad you revived it speed_cochrane. I don't think I've read the full interview before, though I did know bits and pieces of it.

Sigh. I really wish Rory was more of a routine-liking kind of guy. Maybe Speed would still be alive. But then, if Rory was really going to be unhappy in the role, I'm sure the show would have suffered for it...

Yeah there was a part where he said that sometimes he didn't even care if he was good or not and it scared him. Well..it would scare me too having Mister Speedle onscreen there and he's suppose to say his line and go "Yeah...go evidence.."

I know what you mean. I think that it's sad that he didn't like that type of work, but at least there are characters there that I still love (Horatio, for one). I wouldn't want the show to suffer for their sake alone.

That is true. I still can't say that I'm happy about mister Cochrane leaving but there are times when I say to myself 'Move on!' but..no  I won't. He still likes doing projects and movies and such, and sooner or later he'll pop up again. :D

I really hope so! I know he was supposed to be working on an independent movie or something, but I never knew if it was released, or what happened to it. I just want to see what he's up to now.

Well he was doing the movie Right At Your Door (Formerly known as Forearm Shiver) And it is currently in post production and will be released at the Sundance Film festival. Unfortunately I neither get the Sundance Channel or live close enough to attend it. So that movie is off the list until someone releases it on dvd.

He is also involved in the movie A Scanner Darkly which is currently completed and waiting arrivals at a theatre near you :D

Any other details you can find at This site Imdb.com. But everyone probably already knows that.

Speed is still alive!...In Japan...

Films are famous for being released later in Japan than the rest of the world, though that's changed a lot in recent years, but American TV is is still way behind.

A cable channel called AXN is the exclusive broadcaster for CSI over here, with CSI: LV just gearing up for Season 3 and CSI: Miami in the middle of a New Year's holiday marathon airing of all of Season 1. It'll be a long while before NY is even mentioned here.

Anyway, as a longtime fan of Caruso, I was waiting in anticipation for Miami to begin broadcasting earlier in 2005. About halfway through the first episode I realized it was Rory Cochrane from Dazed and Confused, Love and a .45, and Empire Records. Love the character of Speed, and spoiled it for myself when I read online that he was killed in the 1st episode of Season 3.

Rory Cochrane -- cool actor. I was surprised to read in the interview that he was trying to dress more formally in the role (I had guessed that he begged the producers to let him wear t-shirts, from his own closet no doubt).

Funniest line: "The last time I was in a church was when Kurt Cobain died."

Re: Speed is still alive!...In Japan...

 That was a great line.

He is a really great actor and even in Canada and the United States, Speed fans everywhere are still anticipating his return to the show..hey we can dream. I'm glad you are a fan though, since we need more and more :D

Re: Speed is still alive!...In Japan...

this may sound really weird, but after reading that article, rory sounds to me kinda like a selfish guy(please no fans killing me), im not trying to be mean but, the show gave him a great oppurtunity to be somebody, and he gave it up because it took a lot of work, i know i probably dont know the whole story, but in the end he wanted to control how he died and everything, he hurt the show by leaving because so many people loved him(i have never seen an episdoe with him) and yet he was acting like the writers were being jerks for not letting him chose how he leaves. he wanted to leave because he didnt want to be there so why should he get the satisfaction of getting to go out big, when he was leaving because, this is the impression i got, he didnt want to have to work hard, i mean how many of us would pass up an oppurtunity like the one he got? i realize it, to him, was not about the money, but still what about anybody else besides himself? what about fans and fellow actors?

this is just my opinion so please nobody get mad at me, i wasnt trying to be mean or anything.

Re: Speed is still alive!...In Japan...

No one will get mad at you CSI_Grissom. :) You make some excellent points. I'd say that I want to defend him after what you said but frankly you are right. He wasn't thinking about the producers and writers and fans and fellow co-workers who loved him so. He was thinking about himself, and I guess it's because he needed to choose what he thought was best for him. Maybe it's because he's so used to doing movies and he's comfortable with that kind of scheduling I don't know. All I know is that he was never happy from the beginning about being on the show (The question I ask, is how did they get him to do it?)

He did say he would put in two years, but a lot can happen in two years such as his character becoming very loved among the fans, and himself as an actor being loved by his fans and co-workers. I can't say that I'm okay with his decision but it was his to make. Maybe he could have put in another year for the sake of his fans :D
