No offense, but I don't think this is a clever idea because what makes a photoshopper an 'expert' is the way they handle the coloring, which is impossible without using layers. I don't think we will see any really good icons from the viewpoint of the coloring.
Of course, it's not only the coloring, but the cropping and many more things.
I don't want to be offensive, really, since loadsa people like the idea. I'm going to skip this.

Well I completely respect your opinion, but I just started using layers recently, and even before that I was able to make (what I thought were) pretty decent icons, and with a variety. What about brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, and color variations? I don't know what program you use but in mine (PS) there are tons of ways to color and icon and layers are only one of them.
Sorry if anyone found this challenge a problem, but that's why it's optional and a challenge.

i think this challange is a great idea! it shows if you are able to make good icons without using layers. i discovered new ways to edit a picture and i think you can see it as good practice. it might be difficult for some of us but i am really excited to see the results

I agree, If anything it would make you more of an expert to be able to be creative, innovative and resourceful. I mean its not something I would recommend to someone who just got there first photo program 1 day before, but i think,like people said, it expands your icon making skills.
Kinda tortured me though, i just got my photoshop a week ago and it was killing me to not get to use it to its full extent.
