He actually never served with the military. He had a lot of family who did, from WWII and Vietnam and he was very close to two brothers-in-law who were in Vietnam which caused him to him to become quite sympathetic and active with veteran treatment and affairs from early on. But he was also part of the generation whose military service age never coincided with a major conflict that we were involved in. He was too young for Vietnam, and too old by the time we went into Afghanistan and Iraq. Had there been a conflict between the two I have no doubts he would have signed, but it wasn't if he didn't have a career, and it sounds bad, but if there's no "reason" to fight and be a soldier, why sign with a peace-time army if you don't have an incentive...? But that fact that he never spent any of his own time in the military just makes how much he cares and the level to which he truly takes the time to understand us and what we do and go through that much more impactful.Gary gives a person that warm feeling inside that everything will be O.K., he is not some "stuck up Hollywood Actor.
He believes in our troops because he was one of them, and I see him from time to time asking the public to eat at Ryan's Restaurant on holiday's that Americans have because of all the troops from the late 1600's to now!
He was born, grew up, and lived for quite a while in Chicago, not moving out to California until the mid to late 80s (I forget the exact year). It's why he made Mac originate from Chicago as well. He's still a diehard Cubs fan and has a decided soft spot and ties to the city particularly with Steppenwolf.jimihendrix said:Does Gary Sinise live in Chicago? I haven't read through these postings to see, but when I saw the topic "Chicago's Finest", I was just guessing he lived in Chicago. I'm still sort of new to this Community Board, and there is so much to read, I haven't had time to read all the postings.
And I hear you on there being a ton of pages to read through
