Food for the Heart

I'm desperately craving a cheeseburger at the moment.

Unfortunately I'm too lazy to go out and take the bus all the way to the nearest fast food store, so I guess I'll have to stick with spaghetti... not that I'm in the mood for cooking

well here in Bulgaria its realy cheaper to go out in restaurants to eat then shop and cook - and Im not a good cook so i prefer to go out nad hang with friends for dinners - most young people here do that - i use to order lately raw green salad with chicken(ceaser like) and some chicke steak... and here in Bulgaria we are famous with our good wine so I use to order some red or white wine as well ... we also have nice spirit drink rakia - it goes well with the salad - I love pizza as well - some with bacon(ham) and cheese and pickles - but lately I try to avoid it... i love spaggetti and pasta as well - love spagetti with beef and chilly - here at my street i go to cafe where they make them cool ;)

Okay, so here's a question.
Situation first: I'm going snowboarding next week and we're eleven people. As we're going for 10 days, we figured that we each cook for one evening. Now the problem is, what can you cook for eleven with:
a) not too high budget
b) not a whole lot of equipment (aka no frying pan, no steamer, only 1 oven etc.)
The usual ideas like spaghetti, chicken curry, lasagna etc. have already been taken.
So any suggestions?
'Cause I'm really out of ideas :(

Baked potatoes, easily done and you can serve them with sour cream which you can buy ready-made.
You can have uncooked vegetables with it, carrots, paprika, cucumbers. They're tasty with sour cream, too. ;)

If your friends insist on meat you can fry some poulty with it. I often eat that for dinner, as it's easy and quick to prepare.

Other very popular things to cook for a group: Self made pizza or pasta salad with meatballs. I've done that for parties, it's not much effort.

Hmm. I used to do some volunteer work for a children's summer camp run by my local Christian organisation and for a couple of summers I worked in the kitchens preparing meals for about 130 children and other leaders. In terms of mass catering, we certainly used to do things like Lasagne and spaghetti because they are pretty easy to prepare and then cook so I can see why your friends have chosen to make meals like that.

One year I made simple chicken fajitas for everyone. They were really easy as you can just bake some chicken and strips of vegetables and then add some seasoning or sauce to them. Heat the tortillas and people can make their own from a big communal pan of food, serve with sour cream, cheese, salad and maybe some rice or something.

With 11 people I would probably think of something like 'toad in the hole', but I'm not sure where you are from so that might just sound ridiculously weird. If you don't know what it is, then it's basically sausages in yorkshire pudding batter, which is baked and served with gravy and vegetables. It's actually really easy to make.

i agree with Mia, homemade pizza is a really good choice for groups. especially since so many places sell premade dough or prebaked crusts. my family uses pesto and canned tomatoes instead of ready made pizza sauce as it tastes better and is cheaper in the end. and with pizza you can make several so you can please many tastes of toppings.

one thing my family has done is to bake chicken breasts (or whatever pieces you like) in that campbells condensed tomato and basil soup with cheddar cheese on top. we usually brown the chicken in a pan first but if you dont have access to that you can cook them completely in the oven. you can serve it with rice, or potatoes, or salad and bread.

another thing that is really good and easy is sloppy joes. my family recipe is for every pound and a half of ground beef, mix in that campbells tomato basil soup and a can of chicken gumbo then a squirt of ketchup and mustard. add a simple salad and you have a meal.

Have to say as this is about food.. Its PANCAKE DAY here in the UK today, don't know if it is anywhere else.

Little info on Shrove Tuesday

Love them, its out of habit though the 1st one is always ruined, but you can't beat pancakes with sugar and lemon.

Suppose in the UK traditional food is normally other cultures.. Tho the best is Fish and Chips.
And it has to be from a proper chippy even better if its along the sea front, (Brighton is best)... its so good.

Elsie... toad in the hole is so good its one of those winter meals.

Dawni, I love Shrove Tuesday. Pancakes are the best! :D Last night I made a huge batch of pancakes and we ate them in the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice. It was lovely, although I need to make pancakes more often because my technique was not up to scratch, and my pancake tossing was particularly disappointing. And it's so annoyingly true that the first one never works! Actually, we rarely have those kinds of pancakes now, if I make them I usually do thicker buttermilk pancakes served with bacon and maple syrup. Yum... a perfect Saturday morning breakfast in my house. :)

Wow, thanks for the response :)
I think I'll try the homemade pizza's. It doesn't sound that hard to make. ;)
And I'll make 'em eat raw vegetables while waiting. :D

Elsie, i was as bad, only made the one let mum do the rest but mine felt apart in the middle completely ripped its perfect with just sugar and lemon its nice treat as never really get them any other time of the year.

Can't toss them in our kitchen mainly cos the pan we use is Cast Iron... tad heavy to throw.

Oh I'm hoping to revive this thread! I was looking for some recipes and was hoping we could share some favorites and easy ones so to speak. I don't know how many of you are mom's around here but pleasing the kids sometimes is a chore in itself when it comes to food! I love to cook when I have time and bake so I would love to share recipes with you all! What do you think?
