CSI is fantastic, but is Bones better?

I remember watching CSI when it started back when I lived in the USA. It was so original and unique.. and still is in my opinion. Also, they quite rightly 'franchised' it out to different regions. What does everyone here think about Bones in comparison though? Is it the new CSI? Don't know if anyone here has seen the British crime series 'Waking the dead' but it's really good too. (By the way, believe it or not, some people apparently really hate CSI, like 'Dan' here! http://www.thecult.com/posts/list/218.page Bones/CSI arguement :(

Bones is mostly about forensic anthropology, just one area of the many forensic sciences that CSI covers. This was attempted several years ago with the Gideon Oliver mysteries, starring Lou Gossett Jr. I like Bones and the three CSIs, and assrted other crime dramas like Crossing Jordan, Criminal Minds, NCIS, and the Law & Orders.

Interesting link. I'm wierd, I've never been an avid crime show person unless you count Forever Knight and that had the vampire element. But I love Bones; I had to have a David Boreanaz fix after Angel went off...and actually CSI came from Gary Sinise being on CSI NY. But I like them both .

Interesting that they found the CSI chars unrealistic. I had thoughts about this on the Bones board too. One one hand, I can see how people with a lot of knowledge in the area might get bugged by the shows but OTOH I also wanna say to them "come on, it's TV people"...most of us know it's not totally true to life but we enjoy the characters anyway.

I hope I'm not coming accross as offensive; I don't mean to disrespect anyone's opinion or anything.

Hmm, I'm not sure if this thread is totally on-topic in this forum, but I don't want to automatically close it either. :) allmaple and myself will leave it open for the time being and ask for a second opinion.

Edit: We'll leave the thread here for now and see how the discussion develops. Then we can take it from there. So go ahead and talk about the CSI franchise compared to the Fox show "Bones." :)

Personally, I don't really see much of a comparison. "Bones" is about the FBI and forensic anthropology (as was already mentioned) while the CSI shows concentrate on city-specific crimes and the cops gathering evidence from the scene, etc.

It's easy to see why someone would prefer one or the other, but I'm personally a fan of both. ;) While I love the CSI franchise (and NY is my favorite), I also enjoy "Bones" as well. ;)

Bones and CSI? That's not the same thing, is it?
Anthropology and forensics ... well, in both cases, their goal is to find the murderer, but in Bones they deal only with bones -obviously

As far as which one is better -I, too, am a fan of both shows, but CSI remains my #1 ;)

I ahve to agree with what most people here have said. I love CSI but I'm not giong to slander another show just because it is similar to CSI. I may not like a show like..... Grey's Anatomy, because it just isn't my style. But I'm not gonna be all mean about it.

Sorry, rambling now. I think that both are in their own field. FBI and normal police departments. BIG difference.

I've only seen Bones twice and both times, I didn't find it very special. Maybe, it was the episodes-- but CSI is easily much better. :)

I think both shows are great, but I prefer CSI (even though I love David Boreanaz). I always felt like in Bones, the supporting cast isn't as convincing as in CSI. Although the cases can be really interesting.

I bought the first Season of Bones on Monday and started watching on Tuesday and although i've not finished watching it yet i have to say i'm already hooked, it's a great show with great characters and great chemistry. And although i do still like CSI, i think i like Bones a little more. Mainly because with Bones i like all of the characters, there's not one character in Bones i don't like, whereas in CSI i don't like two (those two being Griss and Sara).

But i think they are both good, Bones being slightly better in my humble opinion. And as probably mentioned, both are different though dealing with asspects of death and the investigative side. CSI deals more on the side of the investigations and Investigation asspects while Bones deals more with the anthropological side to it and also teaching as well.

I think i put that right, sounded ok in my head, hope everyone gets what i meant.

I don't think so.. beings this is a CSI fansite- I would think that everyone on here would for the obvious reasons pick CSI..no matter what!!!! there's other good shows.. but none even come close to this show and it's cast.. in my opinion ;)

it's a great show with great characters and great chemistry.
Yeah, I have to agree with you there, Aiden_Burn. :D Bones has some amazing interaction, and I love the cast (from the first season especially, I'm not sure I like that new woman, Cam). The chemistry between the characters is amazing, and I love the UST between Bones and Booth, as well as between two other characters (I won't specify who because it would spoil the second season ;)).

Being a huge NY fan, I like NY more than Bones. However, I might go so far as to say that I like Bones more than I like either Miami or Vegas. And even though I like NY more, when it comes to the cast's chemistry, NY is lacking a bit behind Bones, mainly IMO because of Lindsay. I don't think she meshes as well with the team, I'm not believing the romantic tension we're supposed to see between her and Danny, etc. On Bones, the second-season relationship I mentioned is so well done it makes Danny/Lindsay look ridiculous in comparison--boy likes girl, boy tries to ask girl out, girl resists, etc. Now granted, I missed this week's episode of Bones, so I might change my mind after I see the re-run, but overall I think the chemistry and acting just sells it on Bones, where NY isn't convincing me.

As for why I like Bones more than Vegas or Miami, I can't say for sure. Starting about half-way through last season, I started to lose interest in Miami and Vegas, and I still haven't gotten totally back into them yet. Bones has kept my interest almost as much as NY has. If they'd kept Dr. Goodman from S1 on Bones, I'd like Bones even more right now. Cam, his replacement, didn't add anything spectacular to the show except for some extra drama...

In any case, I love both the CSI franchise and the show Bones, but I don't think it's necessarily accurate to compare them. It's still an interesting topic of discussion, though. ;)

i really liked bones, when it was on mondays. then they changed it wednesdays when im at band so i cant watch it anymore! :(
i originally was interested in the show because of, hello! david boreanaz *drool* but my mom has read the books and she told me about the characters and i thought it sounded really interesting.
i think theyve done a real good job for being a new show. the stories are interesting and theyve been able to get the character aspect that some shows dont get around to til season six or seven *cough*csi*cough* we know a little bit about each characters family and backround, and when new storylines pop up they arent dropped like some shows do *cough*you get the idea... :p
i wish i was able to see more episodes of bones, i usually only catch it over christmas break and over the summer. i havent seen a bad episode of bones (but i havent seen many)
however, i for one think the shows are very similar, ie dealing with crimes and evidence and forensics, but the approach is very different. so i guess when you get down to it, they are two different and distinct shows, and are both very good in their own right

Yeah, I hated when they changed the timeslot, because wasn't it on against Criminal Minds at some point last season? I like Bones, but I love Criminal Minds. ;) Anyway, it sucks that you can't see it every week. :( Fox doesn't offer the shows online the way CBS does, do they? If they did, I would be able to see what happened on the episode this week. I'm going to have to go read a review somewhere or something. :p

I agree with what you said about the character development and continuity, which are problems all three CSI shows have had at some point.

i for one think the shows are very similar, ie dealing with crimes and evidence and forensics, but the approach is very different.
Exactly. :) Yeah, they're solving murders and putting the bad guys away, but the way that they solve the crimes are different. Some aspects of the shows parallel each other, but overall I think Bones was able to find its own little niche in the crime drama category. ;)
