CBS just made its final renewals for next season, picking up 10 scripted series, reality staples Survivor, The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss and newsmagazines 60 Minutes and 48 Hours. No major surprises (and bloodletting) on the list of renewed scripted series, with all shows except for bubble series Stalker, The McCarthys and Battle Creek, which already had been unofficially cancelled, coming back, including CSI: Cyber, The Odd Couple, Person of Interest, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawaii Five-0, Criminal Minds, Elementary, The Good Wife and Blue Bloods. That is besides the mothership CSI series, which has not been picked up for a 16th season but has not been cancelled either. I hear the network continues to work on a finale plan for next season, probably a movie.
WEDNESDAYS – SURVIVOR once again opens the night at 8:00 PM, where it continues to win in viewers and demos. CBS’s highest-rated 18-49 drama, CRIMINAL MINDS, which grew its audience this year, delivers the perfect lead-in at 9:00 PM for the fast-paced new medical drama CODE BLACK at 10:00 PM.
One Ghost Whisperer alum will succeed another as Aisha Tyler joins CBS’ Criminal Minds in the wake of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s one-and-done run.
Tyler will recur during Season 11 of the crime drama as Dr. Tara Lewis, a forensic psychologist who is determined by Hotch to be the best candidate for Kate Callahan’s vacated position, EW.com reports.
In addition to Kate leaving the BAU to focus on motherhood, Criminal Minds will also be temporarily down an agent due to longtime cast member A.J. Cook’s real-life maternity leave.
In addition to her run as Ghost Whisperer Melinda’s gal pal, Tyler’s TV acting credits include (but by no means are limited to) Archer (where she voices Lana Kane), Two and a Half Men, Modern Family and XIII: The Series. She also of course serves as a cohost on CBS’ The Talk
CBS is making a quick change to its Wednesday summer lineup, swapping Extant and Criminal Minds‘ time slots.
Rather than sandwich Criminal Minds reruns between new episodes of Big Brother and Extant, the crime procedural will air at 10 pm, beginning July 22. Extant, meanwhile, will move up one hour to 9 pm.
The seven-year itch for Jane Lynch's return to Criminal Minds might finally be over.
Lynch hasn't appeared on the drama as Reid's (Matthew Gray Gubler) schizophrenic mom Diana since the fourth season, but we are thisclose to a mother-son reunion in Season 11. "Now with Glee finished and [Lynch's new show Angel From Hell] is on CBS ... I don't think that will be a problem," executive producer Erica Messer tells us. "We absolutely want her back. I've talked to Matthew about it. We've got to find a reason to bring her back because I don't want it to be unrealistic or just to have her. And we want to be able to use her well too."
Diana was last mentioned in Season 9, when Reid received a postcard from her about her supervised trip to the Grand Canyon. "She was doing well last we heard, which is great," Messer says. "But often with the drama shows, you need a dramatic reason that she's back, so we're going to figure that out first. But I think she'll come back and play again."
Season 11 of Criminal Minds premieres Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 9/8c on CBS.
Criminal Minds fans who are disappointed to not see Emily Prentiss return to fill one of the BAU’s vacancies can blame John Stamos’ surprise brush with grandfatherhood.
Appearing Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, where she was promoting the new Fox comedy Grandfathered, Paget Brewster revealed that she was interested in putting in another Criminal Minds encore, but scheduling conflicts proved insurmountable.
“I was hoping to jump in and do a couple [of Criminal Minds episodes], because my friend A.J. Cook, who plays JJ, is [finishing maternity leave],” Brewster shared. “But it didn’t work out, time-wise,” due to her commitment to Grandfathered (where she plays Stamos’ baby momma and thus a grandmother).
CBS’ Criminal Minds had two agents to replace entering Season 11, with the aforementioned Cook (who gave birth in late July) wrapping her maternity leave and Jennifer Love Hewitt having vacated the role of Kate Callahan in the spring, after one season.
Thus far, Aisha Tyler has been cast in a recurring role of as Dr. Tara Lewis, a forensic psychologist who is determined by Hotch to be the best candidate for Kate’s position.
Brewster wrapped her full-time Criminal Minds run at the close of Season 7, then popped up in the middle of Season 9 for the drama’s 200th episode.
