Most writers write characters with people in mind, so they ususally give them first refusal, and then audition for others afterwards if they decide they don't want the part. This may have been true with CSI:M, does anyone know?

I know Bill Petersen was the only person Anthony Zuiker wanted for the part of Grissom, because I saw an interview with him, but he didn't mention the casting of CSI:M

As I understand it, Jimmy Smits was offered the Horatio role first and turned it down. Irony, ain't it wonderful? Smits followed Caruso to NYPD and Caruso followed Smits to CSIM......thank God. I like Smits but he's no Horatio , at least not as we now know him.
