I have a little suggestion, that may improve the icon challenges I put up in here every two weeks, though it depends on all of your opinions.

I am thinking about putting two different levels at which people can submit their icons - "beginner" and "advanced".

Now, before you all throw rocks at me or something, I'm not trying to insult those who are less experienced with Photoshop and/or Paint Shop Pro. The reason behind it is that I thought it would be a good way of giving more people a chance to win a banner. And also perhaps encourage more people to enter these challenges :)

Here's what would change if enough people like the idea:

- people will only be allowed to enter the challenge at one level. You can decide which level you enter your icon(s) at yourself, unless I see someone who obviously should be in the advanced category entering the beginners level :p

- people will be allowed to enter up to 3 icons each (to make sure we have enough to vote for in each category)

- when people vote, they will vote twice, once for the icons they like in the beginners category, and then again for the icons they like in the advanced category. Voting will be clearly set up, with the beginner's icons under one heading, and then the advanced icons under a second heading.

I am, of course, aware that this means I will have to make extra banners if requested, which I am happy to do :)

The only thing I am not 100% sure on yet is whether I will provide both the beginners and the advanced entrants with the same screencap. I may decide to give each category a different one (although it will still be the same character from whatever film/TV show we are doing that week).

I'd really appreciate some feedback on this. I understand some may not like the idea, which is cool, but either way, please comment by replying to this thread. I need to know how many are in favour, and how many aren't.

I like the idea itself but I imagine it will be difficult to decide where to draw the line between beginner and advanced.

I think it's a very good idea. :)

It gives those of us who aren't as 'experienced' a chance to showcase our improvement, as opposed to those who clearly don't need any more help. ;) (Of course experienced icon-makers deserve encouragement as well)

Wonderful idea wibbs, I'm all for it.

I'm all in favour. This is excellent! I mean I'm one who LOVES to vote and this just gives me an excuse to vote more hehe.. but I like this new plan because it's fair :) and indeed, it does allow more people to enter.

Mods think of everything don't they :D.

As for whether you should choose different screencaps for the competition, my opinion would be 'Yes'. They can only do little with one screencap and if it were seperated, both sides, Advance and Beginners can showcase their different ideas. :) That'll be nice to see.

Well I hope people can think by themselves to which group they belong and don't try to get to "beginners" group if they've done lots of icons.

I don't know what to think about this because on the one hand it's a good idea but on the other hand,how many icons were submitted on the last competition? 8,9? If you split the competition in two maybe there will be only 4 or 5 icons in each level and that could make the icon competition less interesting...

If I may make a suggestion,I think it could be nice if one of the weeks instead of an icon challenge you do a wallpapers one because I've seen that there are a lot of talented people doing wp around here.

I really appreciate you running all these competitions. :)

Yeah, but if you read my post, I'd let people enter up to 3 icons if they wish, to make up the numbers of icons in each category so we have enough to vote for. Also, I'm hoping the categories will encourage more people to enter anyway ;) But if it turns out not enough icons are submitted to each category, I can easily change the running of these challenges back to the way they are now :)

Yeah, I've thought about doing wallpaper and/or banner challenges, but when I first suggested these ideas quite some time ago, most people seemed interested in doing icons. I didn't think there were enough people who made wallpapers around here to set up a challenge for it, but if anyone would be interested in entering a wallpaper challenge, please let me know :)

As for the divide between beginners and advanced, I already have a mental list of who I would expect to enter the advanced category, and like Ducky said, I'd hope most people will be sensible and think for themselves which category they should be in.

I have no problem with people who progress with their icon-making to move up and enter into the advanced category if they wish to give it a shot, or feel they are more experienced with PS and PSP, but I don't want experienced people entering the beginners category. That's not fair and defeats the objective of this idea.

That´s a great idea wibble I like it very much. If you say 3 icons - do you mean three icons from the same cap or three different caps :confused: I like it either way :p but i´d prefer to have different caps for beginners and advanced.
And since i start to be photoshop-addicted...i love the idea of a wallpaper challenge :D

gotta say it's a pretty good idea wibble. although i'm still afraid there won't be enough icons in each category. and a winning banner would be .. umm.. less precious, if y'all know what i mean ;)

Well I think we should try the idea anyway, and see how it goes. You never know what could happen. There could be some beginner icon-makers who just haven't had the opportunity or encouragement to enter an Icon Challenge because they don't feel they are good enough to win.

Now that we may have a category for beginners, they might be a little less shy to showcase their developping talents. But I do understand tbe point made about not having enough entrants. It could make things a little less interesting of course, but much more competitive. ;)

I see what you mean, and I understand. However (and I hope none of the winners take offense at this, because I certainly don't mean it in a bad way), sometimes it gets to the point where some people, perhaps in particular beginners, feel discouraged from entering because they feel "well, same people win all the time, what's the point?". And I'm hoping this suggestion may remedy that, at least a little.

I'm inclined, based on the responses so far, to give it a whirl and see how it pans out. Like Geni said, it could lead to something much better, though if it doesn't work out, or people decide they don't like it, then I'll change it back to the way it is now :)

I wish to emphasise that I'm open to any other suggestions, or improvement to this idea :) I'd really like some more opinions on this, so please don't be shy everyone! ;)

This way more people get engouraged to enter, that would be fantastic :D

I think it's a good idea. The thing is, I've been experimenting with a lot of techniques, so some of my icons turn out great, and some just plain sucks. So I think if there are two levels, then I could try the beginner's one, and once other people (maybe the Mods) think I'm good enough, I can then move on to advanced. And even though I am speaking for myself ( :p ) I think everyone can improve this way :)
