what was the explanation?
That the director of the FBI tapped him for a special assignment/temporary duty elsewhere. If he was only going to be gone a couple of episodes, it wouldn't matter much, but it's kind of a non-event as far as the exit of a main character goes.

It's always a bit of a mess when someone leaves/is fired and there's no chance to film some sort of departure, but I guess they have to work with what they have--plus they'd already shot this episode by the time it was announced that he was fired, right? Oh well, it is what it is. I'm curious to see what their explanation is for him not coming back once we get to the point where Prentiss comes on full time...

Well, that storyline was already in place though. I read that he was already going to go on temp duty elsewhere, but of course before Gibson was fired he was only supposed to be gone a short time, like a few episodes or so. Which basically means they do still have to give some sort of permanent solution to his absence. My fear is that they'll be pissed enough with the actor to kill the character to make it almost impossible to bring him back even if ratings etc would drop.

CBS rescheduled tonight's episode for next week, to avoid competing with Game 7 of the World Series (CSI Files article). Not surprising, after they rescheduled NCIS and NCIS: NOLA.

So people were right who said Hotch was going (to resign) to spend more time with Jack. Now we know Hotch is in witness protection and will not come back (any time soon). It was a good explaination though I would have preferred to have an episode or two that would have dealt with this backstory. So that we see an actual goodbye and not some off-screen storyline. I'm curious to see Prentiss as the new boss in town :)

Considering the alternative I do like this. I was scared he'd be killed off so this I can accept.
