Summary: What if Horatio met Yelina first, before she met Raymond?
Author’s Note: You know how in comics there’s always an alternate universe? I have always been intrigued by Horatio’s statement to Yelina in ‘Blood Brothers’ about “I always thought that if you haven’t met Ray first, that you and I could…” What if Horatio had met Yelina first? What would have happened and how would their lives have changed from what we saw on TV? This is my take on it, H/Y’s alternate universe. And as always, reviews and comments are very much welcome. Enjoy!
Yelina sat on the couch in her living room, watching her family. Her hair was neatly tied up in a bun, her brown locks had turned mostly gray, thanks to more than twenty years of police work. That and a family of three children to bring up. She still maintained her beauty and poise. Something her children had said would be impossible for her to lose. She watched her three grandchildren playing on the floor and smiled. They were a constant source of joy to her. Her eyes turned to her children in the kitchen, busy preparing Thanksgiving dinner.
Matthew, a doctor by profession had shifted his practice to Seattle in the past year. As a result, Yelina no longer got to see him and his family as often as she would have liked. Matt had an air of confidence about him, the result of being the firstborn in the family. He was natural leader, much like his father. He had inherited his mother’s brown curls, something he disliked, but his wife had always teased that it was the part she liked best about him.
Her second son, Joshua was the only one who had chose to remain in Miami, with his wife and two children. He was a carbon copy of his father, from the red hair to the mannerisms, and even his chosen profession. The only one of their three children who had followed his parents’ footsteps into law enforcement. He had a rebellious streak in his teenage years giving his parents much heartache and worry, but fortunately he outgrew it and blossomed into a calm and collected CSI working with the MDPD crime lab.
Their youngest was Isabella. She had just graduated from college and had chose to remain in new Jersey where she had studied. Bearing a striking resemblance to Yelina, she was strong and independant, something also inherited from her mother. Isabella had majored in Chemistry and was, in that aspect similar to her father. She often bubbled with youthful exuberance and was the object of attraction of many boys, keeping her father sufficiently busy in her teenage years.
Yelina’s gaze then shifted to a photograph of her and her late husband. He had died in the past summer and she missed him terribly. He had been her friend, lover and soulmate. Her eyes moistened at his memory.
“Thinking of Dad?” Isabella asked, taking a seat beside her mother. She handed the baby girl, her niece and latest addition to the family, in her arms to Yelina.
Yelina smiled and nodded, cuddling the four-month-old baby. “He would have liked to have all of you home again.”
“We miss him too.” Isabella replied, giving her mother a quick hug.
Yelina stroked the baby’s cheek. “You didn’t get to meet Grandpa did you? But Grandma will tell you all about him when you’re older.”
Nicole, their first grandchild jumped onto the couch next to her aunt. “Tell us, how did you and Grandpa meet?”
Yelina laughed. “I didn’t think a seven-year-old would be interested in these things.”
“Daddy told me it's a good story.” The little girl smiled back at her grandmother.
“Yeah tell us,” her younger brother Adam joined in. The two children squeezed onto the couch beside Yelina. Not wanting to be left out, their three-year-old cousin Damien climbed onto his aunt’s lap, waiting for Yelina to begin her story.
“Ok if you guys really want to know,” Yelina conceded. Her thoughts drifted back to the day at the beach, more than thirty years ago. “It was a very long time ago. It was my day off. I was at the beach. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky…"
I had the inpiration and I had to write, so enjoy. Stay tuned for more.
