Chapter One

Nick stood up from the table and his phone rang. He picked it up off the table and answered it, pulling out his car keys at the same time. "Stokes." He answered.

"Hey, Nick." The familiar voice said.

"Oh, hey, Greg. You at the airport yet?"

"Not yet. I couldn't remember if I gave you my key or not. I wanted to call and check before I got too far. Wouldn't want poor Draven to go hungry because I was too distracted to remember to give you the key to my place."

"No worries, Greggo. You gave me the key." He said as he walked outside, toward the alley.

"Oh, good. Thanks again for agreeing to take care of my dog while I'm gone. I really appreciate it."

"It's not a problem, Greg. Hey, I thought Warrick left."

"What?"

"His car is still here." He started walking toward Warrick's car. That's when Greg heard the most terrifying sound. He heard his friend scream. "Noooooo!" Nick screamed.

"Nicky?" Greg asked, worried. "What's wrong?" He heard the phone clack against the pavement. "Nicky!"

Nick had dropped the phone and had pulled Rick out of the car. "Rick, no!" Nick cried out, cradling his best friend in his arms. "Warrick was trying to talk, but nothing came out except for blood. "Warrick, please don't die!" Warrick's eyes closed and his movements stilled. Nick checked his pulse and didn't find one. Nick tried CPR, but to no avail. He had no idea how long Warrick had actually been bleeding, but Nick noticed the two bullet holes in his friend. "Noooo!" Nick cried again, cradling Warrick closer to his chest.

"Oh My God!" Greg said. He could tell by the sound of Nick's voice that he was going into shock and would be in no shape to call anyone. Greg disconnected the call and dialed another number.

"Grissom." His supervisor answered.

"Griss, it's Greg."

"Aren't you supposed to be at the airport?"

"I was, but I'm coming back. Something's wrong."

"What do you mean?"

"I was talking to Nick on the phone as he was leaving the diner. He saw that Warrick's car was still in the alley. He went toward it and then I heard him scream out Warrick's name and he dropped the phone. He was begging Warrick not to die." Greg was freaking out. "I'm on my way back there... to the diner now. Nick is going to... if something's happened to Warrick, Nick's going to need all of us to lean on for support. It sounded like Nick was going into shock."

"Calm down, Greg. I'll call Brass and Cath and let them know what's going on."

"Griss, if you get there before I do, please tell Nicky that I'm on my way."

"I will, Greg. See you soon." They both hung up their phones.

~ ~ ~

Catherine, Grissom and Brass did make it to the diner before Greg. They couldn't get Nick to let go of Warrick. Even Dave and Doc Robbins tried to persuade Nick to turn Warrick over to them, but he still wouldn't let go.

Greg arrived and Brass greeted him. "Hey, Greg." He sighed heavily. "Rick's gone." He said sadly. "Nicky's not taking it well at all. He won't release Rick to Doc Robbins."

Greg nodded and walked over to where Nick was. Seeing all of the blood, knowing it was Warrick's nearly made him sick at his stomach. He forced it away. He had to be strong for Nick now. He knelt next to his friends. "Nicky, you have to let Warrick go with Dave and Doc Robbins now, okay? They'll take good care of him." Greg put his hand on Nick's shoulder.

Nick gently leaned Rick's body against the asphalt. He collapsed in tears and Greg wrapped his arms around him.

"Greg, maybe you should take Nick home." Brass suggested. "You seem to be the only one who can get through to him right now. You should probably stay with him too. He shouldn't be alone."

Greg nodded. "I was planning to anyway. Nick, lets get you out of here, okay?" Nick allowed Greg to help him up and lead him to his car. He helped Nick into the car and buckled his seat belt. Nick was still in shock. Greg drove to Nick's place, helped him out of the car, unlocked the door and guided Nick inside. He put on a pair of gloves to bag Nick's blood soaked shirt for evidence. He helped Nick clean up and got a t-shirt and pair of sweat pants for Nick to change into. He changed his own clothes (using spare clothes from an overnight bag he always kept in his trunk) as well. He helped a still disoriented Nick into the bed and he went to lay down on the couch himself.

Later that night, Greg heard a scream coming from Nick's bedroom. He jumped up and ran to the bedroom. He flipped on the light and quietly went to Nick's side, so as not to startle him. He tried to wake him gently. "Nicky, wake up." He said, shaking him lightly.

Nick suddenly opened his eyes. He saw Greg and relief washed over his features. "Greg?"

"Yeah."

"You're okay!"

"What?"

"You're not... you're not hurt?"

"No, I'm okay."

"Thank God!" Nick said, a tear falling down his cheek as he pulled Greg into a hug. "Don't leave me, Greg!"

"What?"

"I've already lost one best friend. I couldn't stand to lose another. Please, Greg!"

"Oh, Nicky." Greg said, realizing what Nick's nightmare must have been about. Greg hugged him tighter. "I'm here, Nick. I'm not going anywhere." Greg said as Nick clung to him like a frightened child. "I'm right here."

~ ~ ~

"How can this be happening, Gil?" Cath asked in tears.

"I don't know." Gil replied, holding Catherine as she broke down.

I love reading fanfictions about Nick and Greg's friendship. Sometimes TPTB seems to neglect the fact that *gasp* Nick and Greg are friends! Imagine that, hey?

Anyways, sorry about that. *cough* I absolutely looovveedd your story. Keep writing, and I look forward to the next installment!

Chapter Two

Greg woke up when he heard the knocking on the front door. He opened his eyes, realizing that he must have fallen asleep while he'd been comforting Nick. He noticed that Nick was sound asleep. Greg got up quietly and went into the living room to answer the door. PUlling it open, he saw Sara standing there. "Sara, I'm so glad you came!"

"How could I not, Greg? You sounded so distraught on the phone. I felt compelled to be here for you. You are my best friend after all. How's Nick?"

"He's asleep. He wouldn't let go of Warrick. Brass, Cath, Griss, even Doc and Dave all tried to get him to. But, he wouldn't until I got there. He had a nightmare earlier that something happened to me, I guess. When he woke up he..."

"He what?"

"He begged me not to leave him, saying that he'd already lost one best friend and couldn't lose another."

"Poor Nicky." Sara said. "What about you, Greg? How are you holding up?" Greg suddenly broke down, not able to hold it in any longer. "Oh, Greg. Come here." She pulled Greg into her arms and let him sob on her shoulder as she comforted him.

~ ~ ~

Nick walked down the alley and saw his friend lying on the ground bleeding. "No!" He screamed, pulling his friend into his arms. "Not again! Please God! Not him too!" He cried out.

~ ~ ~

"Sara?" Greg said, looking up from her shoulder.

"Yeah?"

"Why does bad stuff keep happening to our team? I mean, it's like we're cursed."

"I don't know, Greg."

"First there was the whole Nigel Crane thing, then the lab explosion. Then Nick was buried alive. Catherine was assaulted, her daughter kidnapped and her father killed. Then I got beat up by that mob. And then you got kidnapped by that crazy chick. Then you left, then Warrick got accused of murder and now he's dead. Why can't the powers that be just give us all a break already?"

"I don't know, sweetie." She hugged him again.

"No! Please, no!" They both heard Nick screaming in his sleep. Both adults jumped up and ran toward Nick's room. Sara got inside first and went over to Nick's bed.

"Nicky, it's okay, honey." Sara said in a soothing voice as she tried to wake him. "Wake up. It's okay." She stroked his face with her fingertips. "It's okay, sweetie."

Nick grabbed her hand, but his eyes remained close and he was still half-asleep. "Don't leave me." He said softly with a sadness and fear in his voice.

"He's having that same nightmare again." Greg noted.

"Nick, wake up, honey." Sara said.

Nick opened his eyes. "Sara?"

"Hi." She smiled at him.

"When did you get back?"

"Earlier. Stopped by to see Grissom first. Then I called Greg to tell him I was in town. He said he was here with you, so I decided to come by and see you both."

"Where is Greg?" He asked, panic in his voice.

"I'm right here, Nick." Greg said, walking further into the room. Nick relaxed when he saw his friend.

"Greg, I need to ask you something." Nick said.

"I'll stay as long as you need me to, Nick." Greg replied, already knowing the question.

"Thanks, Greg."

"What are friends for?" He smiled.

"Why were you sleeping on the couch? I have a guest room you know. My siblings and parents come for a visit ocassionally, so I kind of had to have a place with a guest room. Luckily they don't all come at once. I don't have room for all of them." He chuckled softly.

"Greg, would you like me to swing by your place and pick up some clothes and stuff for you?" Sara asked.

"No, that's okay. I keep extra stuff in my car all the time now. I've got enough for at least another day. Thanks, though. Draven's got enough food and water to last until tomorrow and he's got access to the backyard."

"Okay. Hey, do you guys want to watch a movie or something? I mean, it doesn't look like any of us are going to be able to sleep."

"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea." Nick said. "Greg?"

"Got any popcorn?" Greg inquired.

"Of course."

"So, got any good movies to watch?" Greg asked Nick.

"I haven't rented anything in a while or bought any new ones lately."

"I have some I bought in my car." Sara said.

"Really? What do you have, Sara?" Nick asked.

"Street Kings, but trust me, Nick, not the time for you to watch that one. I've got What Happens In Vegas and Strange Wilderness. Never watched either of them, but heard they're funny."

"Okay, well it's probably a good idea to stick to comedies anyway." Greg said.

"Yeah, I agree." Sara said. "I'll be right back. Gonna go get my DVD folder out of my car." She got up, grabbed her keys and went outside.

"Sorry you had to cancel." Nick said suddenly.

"What?" Greg asked, confused.

"The publisher meeting."

"Oh. Nicky, that's not important."

"Yes, it is, Greg. Writing a book and getting a publisher's interest is a big accomplishment."

"I know, but... Nick, that is the last thing I'm thinking about right now."

"What are you thinking about right now?"

"Are you sure you want to know?"

"I asked, didn't I?"

"Are you going to answer every question with a question?" Greg teased.

"Are you ever going to answer the intial question?" Nick replied.

Greg laughed. "Yeah."

"So?"

"I was thinking about how we won't be able to work this case because we were too close to him. I was... I am worried that whoever gets assigned the case will miss something and we won't catch the bastard that killed our friend."

Nick took a deep breath. "Yeah, I think about the same things."

"It's just... I'm an only child and this team... you're all like my family. Well, except for maybe Hodges. He's more of the annoying cousin you wish you only saw on Christmas and Thanksgiving or something."

Nick laughed out loud, which is what Greg was aiming for. "I feel the same way about Hodges. This team is my second family and most of the time (as much as I love my family), I like the tam a lot better than I do my family. You're all less judgemental." Nick said and Greg laughed.

Sara walked back inside, closed the door and locked it. "I'm back." She held up the folder.

"When I do get my book published, I'm gonna dedicate it to Warrick." Greg announced.

"That's sweet, Greg." Sara smiled.

"Yeah, Rick would have been honored." Nick added.

The microwave beeped. "Popcorn's done!" Greg said, going into the kitchen.

"This is exactly what Warrick would want us to do." Sara said. "He'd hate us all sitting around sad and gloomy. He'd want us to celebrate his life rtaher than mourn him."

"You're right, Sara." Nick said.

Greg came back in with a huge bowl of popcorn and a tray with three drinks on it. He sat it all down on the coffee table as Nick popped "Strange Wilderness" into the DVD player.

~ ~ ~

they all laughed. "Can you imagine actually getting tattoos on your eyelids?" Sara said. "Ouch!"

"There's no way in hell a needle is going anywhere near my eyes." Nick added.

"I agree with that completely." Greg said.

~ ~ ~

"Oh My God!" Sara said at the shark scene. All three of them started laughing.

"That is the weirdest thing I've ever seen!" Nick said.

"Yeah, it looks like one of those clowns from Killer Clown From Outer Space." Greg added.

"Or the one in The It." Sara said.

"Yeah." The guys agreed. The movie was over.

"Okay, so next movie: What Happens In Vegas." Sara said, taking Strange Wilderness out and putting the other movie in the player.

(end of chapter)

Note: Here's an icon I made of the shark scene from "Strange Wilderness" that Sara and the guys were talking about:

It's called a "goblin shark". Good name for it!

Good update! I could see Nick, Greg and Sara doing that. Watching a movie together, have fun.

I don't think Nick was the only one who needed it. I think Greg and Sara did too. And they're right, Warrick wouldn't want them to sit around sad.

Looking forward to the next chapter.

Chapter Three

Nick joined Greg in the locker room. "Hey, Greg."

"Hey, Nick. I'm taking off a few minutes early. I'm gonna swing by my place and grab some more clothes and stuff."

"Okay, that's cool. I've got a few more things to wrap up here before I can leave. I'll see you later."

"Yep!" Greg smiled and walked out of the locker room.

~ ~ ~

Nick finished a little earlier than he thought he would, so he decided to go by Greg's and see if he needed any help gathering up some of his things. He had the radio on in the truck. He was singing along with the radio.

"Justice is the one thing you can always find. You better saddle up your boys and draw a hard line. And we'll raise up our glasses against evil forces. Whiskey for my men and beer for my horses."

The song went over and another one came on. After a bit, Nick was singing along again. "I've got friends in low places where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases my blues away. I'll be okay." he reached Greg's place and panicked when he saw that there wasn't much left of it. He quickly got out of the car. he could see Greg's car in the drive.

"Oh, God!" Nick said. "Greg!" He yelled, panic in his voice. He walked up to Greg's vehicle and put his hand on the hood. It was still warm. Had Greg just gotten there? And if so, where was he? "Greg?" He yelled again. Remembering that Greg had a dog, Nick headed toward the back. He saw Greg sitting down on a concrete step. The younger man was petting his dog. Nick saw tears in Greg's eyes. "Greg, are you okay?"

Greg looked up at Nick. "Why would you ask me that? Are you blind?" Greg snapped.

"I only meant are you physically hurt."

"Oh. I'm sorry for snapping at you, Nicky. I didn't mean it."

"It's okay." Nick said. "Is he okay?" Nick pointed at the dog.

"Yeah. He was outside."

"Thank goodness for that. Do you know what happened?"

"No, I don't know. But, it couldn't have been something I did since I wasn't even here the past few days. And I never leave anything on. I always double check everything before I leave."

"You think it was foul play?"

"I don't know. Everything's gone, Nicky. Except for Draven. And I'm so glad that he's okay, but... all of my clothes, my CDs, movies, everything is gone."

"I'm so sorry, Greg."

"What am I gonna do now?"

"I don't know about replacing all of your stuff, but as for residency..." He paused. "You're more than welcomed to stay at my place for as long as you need to."

"What about Draven?"

Nick reached out to stroke the dog's head. Draven licked his hand and Nick smiled. "He's welcome too."

"Really?"

"Absolutely."

"Thanks, Nicky."

"That's what friends are for." Nick said, putting an arm around Greg's shoulder. "I'm glad you're okay, Greg. When I saw the house..."

"What's left of it, you mean."

"Yeah, I freaked out. I checked the hood of our your car to see if it was still warm and when I realized it was, I knew you probably hadn't been here that long. But, I..."

"What?"

"I still panicked. I just..."

"I know, Nicky. Warrick's death still haunts all of us, but you the most. He was your best friend."

"He was one of my best friends." Nick said.

"Hopefully they'll find out who took him from us. And then he can rest in peace and maybe we'll all feel a little bit better. It'll never bring him back, but..."

"Yeah." Nick said.

"Could we..." Greg started.

"What?" Nick asked as something caught Greg's eyes. Greg stood up and walked a few feet away, Draven following his master. Nick stood up to join the duo. Greg bent down to pick something up from the ground. He brushed off the dirt and smiled as tears pricked the corners of his eyes. "What is it, Greg?" Nick asked, walking closer to him.

"This survived the fire." The younger CSI said. "Do you remember this, Nick?" He showed Nick the framed photo of the two of them with their entire team: Sara, Gil, Cath and Warrick. Nick and Greg were standing beside each other, Rick was on Nick's other side, Sara on Greg's other side. Beside Sara was Gil and next to him was Cath. Vartann was standing next to Cath. Brass was standing on Warrick's other side. Sofia was standing next to Brass, Doc Robbins next to her and Superdave next to him. The labrats were sitting in front of the CSIs, the cops and the MEs. Hodges, with Wendy next to him. Mandy was beside her next to Archie, then Bobby, Henry and Jackie. Ecklie was even in the pic along with Sam Vega and Sgt. O'Reilly (the latter of which had retired, but had joined the group for the photo op). The three of them were standing to the side of Vartann.

"I remember that day." Nick said. "Hey, look. I think I found another picture." Nick leaned down to pick it up from the ground. He turned it over and brushed it off. "This your family?"

Greg looked at the photo and another smile formed on his face. "Yeah. That's my parents and Nana and Papa Olaf."

"Did you have any photos saved anywhere else?"

"Yeah, on a usb drive in my car."

"Well, thats good then."

"Yeah, at least there's that."

"Do you have a leash for him in your car?"

"No, but he'll be fine for now. I can grab one at the store later. He doesn't run off."

"Okay." They walked around the front. Greg put Draven in his car and walked around to the driver's side and got inside as Nick got in his truck. They both pulled out into the street and headed for Nick's place.

~ ~ ~

Nick felt like something was off with the timing of what happened to Greg's place. He asked Sara to see if she could find anything suspicious in the charred remains of Greg's house. Sara found a note in the mailbox (which had been far enough away from the house to avoid being burned). The note warned the grave shift not to snoop to try to find Warrick's killer or the body count would rise. The warning chilled Nick to the bone. He wasn't sure if he should tell Greg about it or not at first, but he realized that he couldn't keep it from the younger man. Nick was now more determined than ever not to let Greg out of his sight even for a second. He had to wonder why Greg's place was chosen as the target. Maybe the killer knew that Nick would want to seek out who killed Rick and this warning was for Nick. Maybe the message was: "If you snoop around, I'll/we'll kill your other best friend too." Whatever the message, Nick wasn't taken any chances. He would not lose another friend.

(end of chapter)

========

This chapter was originally a lot shorter. I added the thing with the pictures after seeing the premiere where they found that pic in Warrick's place. I added several people to the picture though. Did I miss anyone?

Re: "What Friends Are For"- Nick/Greg friendship-Post "For Gedda"-spoi

Ok, so I didn't see that coming. Gee, you like throwing a wrench in things, don't ya?

Draven, good name. I think I know where that came from.

Well, is it a warning for Nick? Or just for everyone? Ugh, who's next. Glad to see Greg is ok.

Waiting for the next chapter.
