Chapter 5
~Flashback~
Gil walked through the lab doors and caught glimpse of a much healthier looking Catherine. He smiled, he knew she would stick to the program.
He watched as she came closer. She was smiling, he hadn't seen that in a while:
"Hey, you're finally smiling again." He said cheerfully as she stopped in front of him.
"Yeah, I feel much better. Thank you, I would have never had the guts to stop if it wasn't for you."
"You're welcome. Now, we have a 419 out in the desert. Ready for it?"
"Oh, yeah. Let's go."
After a half hour drive they arrived at the centre of the Las Vegas desert. They stepped out of their vehicle and walked to where their boss was standing:
"Hey Gil, Catherine. Female victim, blonde, around 20-25 years old. At a first glance it seems that our Jane Doe was killed by strangulation."
"Thanks Jim." Gil replied.
"I'll let ya get to it then."
"Hey whoa, wait a minute. What about you?" asked Catherine.
"Only one thing to say, court."
"Ahh, bye then."
Jim left and soon it was only Gil and Catherine processing the scene.
Catherine glanced at Gil and quickly turned her head away when he caught her staring. Her lips curled, she desperately wanted to smile.
Gil was dumbfounded. Did he just catch Catherine staring at him? No, maybe, the answer was surely a yes. His mind went into overdrive:
Why was she staring? Is she bored with me? Doesn't she want me working with her? Is she uncomfortable?
Come on Gil relax, just work the scene.
But...why was she staring?
You don't want to know. Focus!
"Hey Gil, I think I found something."
Catherine's call startled him from his thoughts. "Really, uhhh...what did you find?"
"I think it was a hand in a previous life."
"A hand? Now that's interesting." Gil stood beside the strawberry blonde. "It could have been a coyote, or the killer could have cut the girls hands off to abstruct identity. If we find it was the second option, the tool used must have jagged edges."
"Mmmmm, as you say, no assumptions. Follow the evidence."
Their eyes locked, blue met blue. A strong silence fell between them:
"I...I think we should...ummm, bag it, right?" Catherine stuttered.
"Yeah...yeah bag it."
For the remainder of the time processing the scene, the two CSI's stayed quiet and avoided each other's gaze at all costs.
When Gil and Catherine arrived back at the lab they instantly split up. Gil went to the DNA lab, Catherine went to trace.
Hours later, towards the end of shift, Catherine sat in the breakroom. She was reading over the casefile, but then decided it was time to head home. She stood and walked to the door. However, she collided with Gil sending her straight to the floor:
"Oww."
"God, I'm sorry Catherine." Gil extended a hand to help her to her feet.
Catherine took his hand and was quickly standing. "Thanks, it was my fault, I wasn't looking."
Again, their eyes locked. The second time in that day, yet it wasn't as uncomfortable as the first, Catherine gave a smirk:
"Better get going." She said, but as soon as she said it, she changed her mind, "Hey, would you like to come for a drink?"
"Won't Eddie be expecting you?"
"Hell no."
"Well, fine."
"It that a 'yeah I'll go' fine or a 'I really can't be bothered but I'll go anyway to keep you happy' fine?"
Gil chuckled, "The first one."
"Oh, ok. Sorry, I overreact sometimes." Catherine's nervousness increased, Gil could see it, she never usually mumbled and ranted, well not around him.
"Cath, calm down. I'll go, I could use it."
"Yeah me too."
Later that night, in the Bellagio bar, Gil and Catherine had already drunk a few, and Catherine kept ordering.
Gil had never expected this. Catherine must have been more nervous than he thought.
A little while later, Catherine wasn't as bad as she seemed, however, she was beginning to 'admit' her problems:
"Eddie can be a lowlife, but when he wants to be, he can be a really great guy. But recently, you have cared about me more."
"Catherine." Gil placed a warning tone to his voice, he had a feeling she was going to say something she didn't mean.
"What? It's true, you helped me and my drug habit, you put me through rehab and I haven't thought about it since. Can't you admit that? You have been so perfect lately, even though when I first met you, I thought you were a bit arrogant and self-centered."
"Gee, thanks."
"No no, no no, I didn't mean that to be offending, sorry."
"It's ok."
"I think...I, uhh--"
"You what?" He interrupted.
"Will you kiss me? Just once, and we will never talk about it again."
"No, Catherine. I can't."
"Why?" Catherine shimmied closer, "Why not?" She breathed low in his ear.
"I just...can't."
"Tell me why." Their faces drew nearer and nearer, until their lips met in a slow kiss.
Gil responded, kissing her back, but soon came to his senses and stopped it, "Catherine, please."
"What? I love you."
Gil snapped, "No you don't! Stop lying!"
"I'm telling the truth."
"You're drunk Catherine, you don't know what you're saying."
"I'm sober enough to know what I'm feeling!" She snapped back, grabbing her purse. She then shot up and stormed from the bar.
~End Flashback~
"That ruined our friendship...for a few days anyway. I knew she couldn't stay mad forever and she knew I wouldn't be mad forever."
"So what happened next?" asked Sara. "But, you can take you're time, I won't rush you. You didn't rush me, when I told you about my past."
"Well, we avoided each other. But we soon gave in. I admit, back then I was attracted to her, as was everybody else. I wasn't conflicted, as I was in the past years. We..."
