The US is basically in the exact opposite situation that Russia was in at the beginning of WWI, IMO. They've got all this military power but no truly competent officers, which is really the main factor in why the War in Iraq has been dragged out for so long and with so many needless deaths.

IMO, the have put their power to use becasue they think they have to.
"If you don't use it, you lose it."
Now that they have made the moves they have made, they can't go back on it. They can't undo it and they can't admit they were wrong because people will have even less faith in the governments.
Plus, so many other countries are involved now, if the any of the governments back down, they will have to answer questions they don't have answers to.
