Storyline types thoughts

I've been thinking of something quite a few times when I pull out my CSI NY magazines...I think they were during season 3 and 4. One of the PTBs talks about the ratings faltering and they didn't think people wanted to see the dirty, gritty stories from early on. They talked about the cockroach one (Daze of Wine and Roaches) and the guy who died getting his leg amputated. And they said they thought people responded a bit better when they started doing more upscale stories.

But if that's the case, and people didn't want to see the earlier-type stories, how were there still so many complaints about "why are they doing yet another rich person story?" on here? Did the writers just not know us as well as they thought they did, or did they just fail to find a happy medium of the types of stories they did?

I lived for the gritter darker story lines that's why I watched it. The twists and turns the storylines held were jaw dropping. Well at least to me.
