Hi All - I've done some Searches in this site but can't locate anything on this topic soooo - deep breath - here I go. Maybe this has come up before? Oh lord, that Flame feeling is coming on...

I'm thinking of renting the first 3 CSI and CSI Miami seasons to count the # of women/girls murdered in comparison to the number of men/boys. I have the awful feeling the women/girls are WAY leading the death count. Maybe this echoes real life? I dunno.

That means, given how the show works, we get to see several detailed re-creations of women being killed, per episode. Often in a sexual context and/or with porn-style presentation. (I don't necessarily have a problem with porn, and own some, but when it comes to porn-style-death, well...especially since it always seems about killing women. How come there's no guy-snuff, where the men get killed? I'm just asking!)

I mean, I loved the show when it started but after awhile I found myself getting creeped out by the female death count, and the way the killings/deaths were being represented. Am I the only one? I can't believe I'm sending this email - I'm braced for the Flaming Fires sure to follow...

Martin Amis talks about "the normalisation of porn" and I have to say that when it comes to all the CSI's I'm starting to think "the normalisation of Snuff". I mean, I loved these shows when they started, but I'm about ready to Sign Off, great music notwithstanding...

Surprisingly, where I live, in Canada (and I presume elsewhere) the highest group of people to experience victimization (be it assault, murder, but not sure on rape) is men, typically between the ages of 15-24 (or was it 24-36?).

Regardless, sometimes, and as bad as it sounds seeing that I like the show, I hate to say it...violence in media in general is portrayed more towards women than it is men, it's one of the bad things about television, women are more often seen as victims than men are, just as men are more often seen as the perpetraitors of violence more often than women.

We learned this in a basic criminal justice class, men are most likely to kill other men. When you tihnk about this, you have to consider victimology, if you want to believe in it or not. Victimology states that the greatest incidence occurs in young people (usually men) who go out to bars at night. However, the media always doesn't always accurately portray reality.
 
The desensitization to violence, porn, snuff...I don't think you'll get flamed. And if you do, screw them. I think that is an excellent question to ask. I think the majority of CSI's victims are women, and they usually tend to die in a sexual way. Whether this portrays real life crime statistics is another story, I think those statistics depend on where one lives.

It does bother me quite a bit sometimes, the almost glamorization of rape and rape-murders on CSI, although the whole "every criminal leaves something of himself behind" theme to CSI is (sort of) reassuring. I know when I became a statistic, there was no kick ass electronika/techno montage and creative lighting going on. Nope. Wasn't quite that cool looking. And I don't think it is in real life, for anyone.
 
One of the moderators, DaWacko, keeps track of weird facts from the CSI shows. There is a thread at Weird Facts Ideas. Even though your question is not weird, maybe DaWacko has been keeping count.
 
Ooh...I think checking those for CSI Miami isn't a big problem for me and I can add it to my list :D thanks Dynamo pointing that out.

I was yesterday talking about this kind of thing when we watched Las Vegas.
With Miami, have you noticed when scene starts with party on the beach/swimming pool or in a club, first shot is
1) woman's breasts (usually wearing bikini)
2) woman's ass
or
3) woman's waist/hips area from front

(sucky English today)
 
I do think that more females than males probably die on CSI, just as there are more male than female killers. Maybe it's gender stereotyping, but I do think it's true to life.

To face the facts, murder and rape do happen, so I guess they're just reporting the truth?

All in all, the show is entertainment, so I don't think it needs to be taken too seriously- I mean, every plotline is for the purpose of being original and entertaining, right? And sick stuff does happen in the world, so how is seeing it on TV any different?
 
Most killers are men, yeah...but can't the kill just other men? why it mostly has to be some model-type woman with big boobs?

I checked back with my notes from that criminology class, it said that you are more likely to be a victim if you:

1. Go out in public places late at night
2. Live in an urban area
3. Associate with young men
4. Staying single (....huh?)

Anyway, a lot of the deaths on CSI (at least LV) are crimes of passion, or some kind of weird accident. A lot of times it involves money, and A LOT of times it involves sex. If you set aside all of the other factors as to why they committed the crime, and whether the gender of the victim can be interchangable (i.e.: could this have worked out just as well if the woman were a man?), you can accurately examine it. You also have to take a look at all of those other factors listed, to see if this woman falls into any other of those categories. If she doesn't, well then perhaps it should be something that should be addressed?

Yeah, I just finished a test, so I'm still in the academic mode here.

^:lol: probably. But I'm mostly happy with myself. Perhaps it's my roots that make me hate to see "rich" people on tv.
But for christ sake, look at British shows - they have even ugly people there, more like..normal people. SAme with German shows.

So women should stay just at home, in a nice place and never socialize with anyone, especially with men. :p

Anyways...during season 1 there was more male victims than female victims
 
Keep in mind some of the locations, too. I mean Vegas, Miami... They were probably picked b/c they have more than your normal amount of "beautiful people" partying it up.

I'm pretty sure that the choices have less to do with victimizing women and more to do with the adage "sex sells". I mean this is TV for entertainment, bottom line. Great if there's some educational value added. Cool. But it all comes down to what people are drawn to, so the usage of women, and especially hot women is par for the course understandably. Audience means money, yeah?

Now the fact that you noticed this and find it disturbing shows you're a person who questions the accepted status quo in society... and that's a very good thing in my opinion! :) All of this crap is just a social construct, and constructs will never be dissolved until people question them, en mass.

Having said that, will I stop watching the show because of this? Sadly no; I'm as active in this particular social discourse as anyone else: They also put really attractive men on the show (i.e check out my avatar!). It's just the other side of the same coin and I'm not going to deny that's half the appeal for me. And in addition to some interesting storylines, cool science and great dialogue... Well, I won't be leaving anytime soon, no matter what my brain acknowledges as wrong.

Whoo. That's the longest post I've done in a while! :) But it's great to see some interesting new discussion points come up. We need more of these threads, methinks!
 
It all ends up to question what we had once in Psychology class:

"If they want to sell something for women, like make-up, what kind of person advertises it?" - a beautiful woman
"If they want to sell something for men, like lawn-mower, what kind of person advertises it?" - a beatiful woman

yeha on alot of csi epys alot of women get murderd which is starting to creep me out a little bit! i just now realized that on most of the epys the women get killed!
 
It doesn't bother me that they have so many female victims. That;s how it works in real life. According to one book I read, 90% of murderers are men.

I think it's because men in general work in more physical ways, and women in general work in more emotional ways.
 
It's not just the killings...what is it with CSI females and bad relationships? I can't recall the Miami or Vegas ones clearly but have heard of them. We just had Stella's incident....

how come the guys never get the bad 'ships?
