School shooting in Finland - 9 Dead confirmed

^Yes.

But then there's a risk and now people start to 'profiling' and everyone who dresses bit differently, listens to metal and has different kind of thoughts - is a psycho. Of course this guy was really extreme and was interested in this kind of stuff.

But I hope in here this brings up the fact that money that is put to kids and youth mental health care isn't enough. Those are usually gone in 6 months

Oh, two 'fake' threats that were made a day after this in southern Finland. FIrst one guys were 14 and 15 and 2nd on guy was 16 - I guess and I HOPE the older guy will be charged because he made vid for 'as a joke' :|

Finland school gunman kills nine

H

At least nine people have been killed and two others seriously wounded in a shooting spree at a vocational college in Finland, police and officials say.
Police said the gunman, thought to be a 20-year-old student, then shot himself, although his condition is now unclear.
He was carrying an automatic weapon and wearing a ski mask when he entered the college in Kauhajoki, reports said.
In 2007 eight people died in another school attack. Finland has one of the world's highest gun ownership rates.
In last year's incident, the gunman, Pekka-Eric Auvinen, posted a video on YouTube as a macabre preview of his attack, pledging to "eliminate" those he saw as "unfit".
Ski mask
Tuesday's shootings in Kauhajoki, some 330km (205 miles) north of the capital, Helsinki, began just before 1100 local time (0800 GMT).
An estimated 200 students were thought to be in the college buildings at the time.

A BBC correspondent in Finland said a gunman dressed in black was seen at the school, apparently carrying an automatic weapon.
A man with a ski mask was seen entering the building with a large bag, national broadcaster YLE reported. Shots were fired soon afterwards, and reports emerged that several people were seriously wounded.
At least one injured girl was seen leaving the school covered in blood, our correspondent says, while police said some of the injured were taken away from the scene and treated nearby.
Police ordered an evacuation and called for reinforcements as fires blazed in the building and local reports said Finland's heavy weapons squad was heading to Kauhajoki.
The gunman remained at large within the college grounds for some time before police apparently restrained and disarmed him.
"I just heard from the police radio that the shooter has been caught. He no longer has a gun," a police spokesman told the AFP news agency.
But hospital sources and the mayor of the town were later quoted as saying the attacker had turned his gun on himself. There was no confirmation of his condition.
In the wake of the 2007 attack, Finland's government pledged to raise the minimum age for buying guns after Auvinen's attack. But the country has a long tradition of hunting and weapons-bearing, with about 1.6 million firearms in private hands, the Associated Press reports.

When will this nonsense end. My heart goes out to all the parents, siblings, relatives and friends of those that were killed. Banning guns is not necessarily the answer as we see in the Toronto area these days but there's got to be a way to stop this from happening again and again.

Ducky I believe this wasn't your school but I hope thinks are safe for you at school.

I am in north 400km from home, place where shooting took place is some 150km south from where my home is. I hope no one I knew goes to that school - it is possible :(

It's just... I mean we have strange people at Uni, what if they come to the end some day? There is one really strange dude already...

I believe here hunting guns are easy to get, but others... I can see them being banned for those who do not need it (such as pistols). BUt they will change the law, they did it last time after the Jokela shooting.

11 dead, including the shooter. One girl is still critical, but should be ok.

What annoys many of people is that police questioned him because of the vids on Monday. Why oh why they didn't take guns away from him?

So tragic, I read this in our morning paper, so it happens everywhere, peace to the families of the lost victims:(

Ah, we started to wonder that there should be one girl who we know, 3 yrs younger than me, has home in our neighbour village. Anyways, with little searching we found out that she indeed was there, and had been in classroom but was one of those 3 who got away thru the window. They had been waiting until the shooter started to set classroom on fire and jumped thru the window and ran away as fast as possible, called emergency number and right after that to their parents. So she is ok, glass cut some of her arm. One of those who got away thru window was shot to the head.
