Picture Posting Question

Right now we have it set that if you want to post a picture that will show in the thread you have to do so on a certain size limit, which means if you bypass that limit we [Tally & Myself] have to edited the post, or you have to resize the photo, all of which can be a pain. Not to mention the factors that you have with when you open a picture thread and you have to wait for all the pictures to load (depending on your speed time) which could result in the thread constantly moving down. And as I said there is the limit of how many and at what size.

So Tally and I are thinking, most of you now use the URL links (no more then 6 ) anyway which has alot of advantages, you don't have to worry about hotlinking (though we still recommend getting your own album), you don't have to worry about resizing, or us editing (unless the pic is improper, etc), and the load time much faster, and if you move the pic that little red X won't show because the pic is missing.

So here is the question for you to vote on and yes you can give your opinion to. I must add that in the question regarding the url linkables 6 will still remain the max links per post.
-For those wondering URL linkables is when you post a link (to say your album) of a photo giving it a name and allowing people to click on and go to the picture. Where as posting a pic means you use the IMAGE code and the picture shows up in the thread.

I voted YES for url linkable pics only. Even using a DSL internet service the image pics just take to long, particularly if someone has put in pics that are to big. Most of us have photobucket accounts and I think is just easier. It may also allow CSI fans that still use a dial up service to be able to participate in more of the threads. This will also make it easier on the poster as we don't have to constantly check our pic to make sure it fits in the size limits.

I love opening threads and your suppost to go to the newest post and then it starts to move down as pictures load and now your thinking where the heck did that post go. :lol:

Sorry, but I voted 'No'. I find myself not clicking on most picture links, because the titles aren't specific enough as to what the picture is - and it becomes a waste of my time. I also find that - especially in the spoiler/episode threads where it's become links only - people keep posting pics that have already been posted because they haven't taken the time to go through every link to see if it's already been posted. Even as a dial-up user, I find it usually takes just as long to open a new page on a picture link.

kaylyne to your question Does url linkable also include thumbnails? - Yes it would be all pictures, just like the spoiler picture thread. The difference is that we are hoping for more discussion such as what the picture is about, etc. like a descript, which is something we will be asking for in the spoiler picture thread, so that people do get to confused.

We are trying to get people to be specific when it comes to pics, events taken at, scene from what ep, which scene and so on if possible. It will be something that has to happen slowly cause like diets if you do them to fast they never work, if you go slow the chances of success is a high rate.

I'm voting no. I agree its a waste of time for all to be links especially if you can just go to the actual sites gallery and see the photos.

I have also voted no. Going though all the links is a huge pain in the arse. I'm sorry but unless they are labeled with what is behind the link I don't bother to look. Clickable images work well in that way small version of what the picture is, much easier to decide what to look at. And like vegaslights said it's also easier to go directly to the site and view as well.

Excuse my English, but I still don't get it. lol. If only url linkable pics are allowed, can we post thumbnails linked to the actual ones at all? I agree with kaylyne that a lot of the text links posted aren't specific enough and it's a waste of time clicking those vague text links just to see pics I'm not interested in. And yes, there are times that pics get posted repeatedly in the spoiler pic thread without information of which episodes they belong to, which has become really annoying. I think it would be great if people could post thumbnails linked to the actual pics. With text links, it would be better if people could use more specific texts instead of vague descriptions. I'm not for posting actual pics, though. I use broadband, but waiting for image-heavy pages to download is still a pain, especially when the images are hosted on a slow server.

I'm not sure I understand totally as well, and I do speak English, whatever works best for the site, and is the easiest for the mods, when I post pictures, I almost always download the pictures I want to my photobucket account, so whatever works best for all concerned, there wasn't a 3rd choice, "doesn't matter" so I did vote YES

I voted no. Not allowing any images to be posted and only allowing links would be quite boring, especially in picture threads where one would expect to see some images, only having links to other sites is quite off putting and can be annoying. Of course I don't think that people should be posting huge images across the entire forum because that would be annoying too and would take an age to load, but my personal opinion is that the rules are already stringent enough. If the option had been there I would have voted for a relaxation of the current rules to be in line with the other forums on the board.

I don't mean this to sound harsh, Tally and Destiny know what is right for this forum, and this forum is unique as it does have many actual picture threads which the others don't. So images would potentially be much more of an issue here than elsewhere. It's just that I would personally prefer more cohesion across the board, making it easier for all users to feel confident about what they are posting.

So, to be slightly more helpful. If it was decided to go 'link only', my personal choice would be to ask people to be much more descriptive in their link text, and to also allow some images in the form of image clickable thumbnails, especially in the spoiler picture thread.

I voted YES but I have always enjoyed doing it both ways, one problem is that posters (myself included) do not post pics at the required size and this can sometimes stretch the screen. I think more descriptive links could work if given a chance. I use a cable modem so I don't worry about load time but I know not everyone does. I'm flexible, whatever works best for the forum.

Honestly repeat through links, vs repeat of pics posted to show up...

I would like to add one thing and I don't want this taken the wrong way as I don't mean to sound harsh, but if you stop to think about it, TallyHo and myself have to open each and every link, pictures, website links, interviews, we have to view, read them. So if you all think well it would be a waste of time, try opening over 50 or more links a day just in this forum, not to mention reading threads in general sense. We're not complaining about again don't get me wrong, take it as an example or food for thought either way.

If you want more discussion of the actual pics posted - maybe you should change that policy instead. I dont think changing over to links instead of pics will help this out. Sorry if this comes off to harsh!

There seems to be different rules in different threads. Over in NY I see a lot of full size pics being posted....here you can only post 6 links and in Miami there doesnt seem to be a rule for how many links you can post. It can be confusing about what is allowed in what forum. Sorry I know this is the LV forum but I wanted to point that out.

I agree. That's part of what I didn't understand earlier. If you're looking for more discussion on the pictures posted, you're not going to get it if everything is in url links. As I mentioned previously, I usually avoid most pics that are in links anyway because of the generic titles. That means I won't have any comments/discussion on the pics either. So I guess I don't see the point in changing to url links.

While I can not speak for NY forum pic sizes, I know Miami does have a max size for IMAGES AND PICTURES [The maximum size requirements for posting images varies from forum to forum. Here in the Miami Forum, we’ve decided that approx 480 px is the maximum width allowable for this forum. - We ask that you post no more than 2 medium or small sized pics per reply. If you have more than 2, the rest should be posted as links.] That link will take you to their Guide for pictures. As to the amount of links they allow is dependant upon the moderators of that forum.

At this time in LV the rule is:
[1 Large pic 400x400,or 2 Medium pics 130x130, or 3 Small pics 115x115. Anything larger then the max size should be put into links, and we ask no more the "6 URL Links" per post.]

Again this is just taking of temp on how we might proceed, there are a few suggestions we are looking at that will help us to see what way to go.
