The performances were good, but the scripts didn't support them. To be considered for an Emmy nomination, you need to submit two episodes. Paul, for example, could've submitted A Bullet Runs Through It 2, but then, which other episode? George could've submitted Gum Drops, but even in that episode, he only had one emotional "Emmy worthy" scene at the end. What about the rest of the season?
I guess I disagree, and feel that (being a George fan, admittedly) there were a number of episodes that could easily have been submitted as good showcases for his performance. Last night's re-airing of Rashomama struck a cord with me again, for example. And whether or not it gave us the resolution we wanted, he was excellent in Daddy's Little Girl.
As in all things, thoughts of season six are obviously subjective. While there were a few disappointing episodes, there were quite a few that I thought were definitely standouts, even moreso than season 4 or 5, and yet those seasons still received nominations.
I really just think that, as usual, it's a popularity contest. When Julia Roberts won an Academy Award for Erin Brokovitch (when truly, Marg Helgenberger's was the best performance in the film ), my faith in these awards shows went down the tubes. Yes, they're not bad options for nominees overall, but what the Emmy voters choose and what intelligent TV viewers perceive as good television doesn't always correlate.
So in closing, I will once again NOT be watching the Emmy's... or the Academy Awards, or any of those other crap awards shows.
