'New York' Ratings Drop, Still Takes The Top Spot

CSI Files

Captain
The second episode of CSI: New York’s seventh season was down more than half a million viewers from the season premiere. “Unfriendly Chat” pulled in 9.67 million viewers in the 9:00pm hour on Friday, October 1. Despite the drop from last week, New York still came out ahead of the second half of a two-hour [...]

Meh. I can't help but wonder how season 7 would be doing right now in its old timeslot.

Seeing these ratings, it seems like a lot of fans left when Melina left, myself included in this camp. I'm not the slightest bit suprised at this swift decline in ratings, even taking into account Friday nights.

I had planned on getting a TiVo to record Friday night episodes when I heard the news of the show moving to Fridays, but when MK left, I cancelled that decision. Now I'm counting down the days and weeks towards cancellation.

I still think there's a good chance that the seventh season will be NY's last.

I honestly think it's the combination of Friday nights and having a poor lead in show that are affecting the ratings as opposed to some mass exodus because one character is off the show. Especially when you consider Sela Ward is a popular draw for a replacement.

Yeah. The move to Fridays, the lead in, the changes, the natural erosion that's been evident during the past few seasons - I think all of it combined has lead to the ratings decline. It's impossible to pinpoint a single cause. *shrug*

Do you mean that you expect it to be cancelled, or that you want it to be cancelled?

Too soon to predict cancelation in my opinion.CSI:NY has dropped a lot but it continues to win it's new timeslot.

I'm guessing that at least part of the drop is because some people tuned in the first episode, not realizing that MK was gone, and didn't hang around for the second ep. It's a pity, because Stella aside, I enjoyed these first two eps more than I did most of last season (heck, I never even bothered watching the S6 finale)

(edited to add)

I agree that it's too soon to be talking cancellation. Friday night seems to be lower rated all round. My guess is that if/when the show airing in NY's original slot gets cancelled, that they'll move CSI NY back there. (and no, I don't know anything about its ratings or popularity, i'm just speculating)

The Defenders doesn't seem to be doing too badly, but it's not really a hit either. The second episode came in second behind the series premiere of Law & Order: Los Angeles.

"...week two of drama The Defenders at a second-place finish in both total viewers (10.38 million) and adults 18-49 (2.5/ 8) at 10 p.m. One week earlier, The Defenders opened with 12.17 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 in the demo on Sept. 22. And one year earlier, former occupant CSI: NY was noticeably stronger at 13.16 million viewers and a 3.3/ 9 among adults 18-49." (source)

Not that this really says much, but I looked it up because I was curious. (The show is totally wasting the lead-in support from Criminal Minds, though. CM had 14.41 million viewers and 3.6/10.)

In any case, I don't consider ~600,000 viewers one way or the other to be a massive shift for NY from 701 to 702 (although I'm not an expert or anything, obviously :p). There have been episodes in the past that fluctuated a million or more viewers from week to week. If NY experiences a steady decline, I'd say it's time to worry. For now, the drop could be based on a lot of stuff (or it could be viewed as a bump last week, perhaps from curious newbies wanting to check out Sela Ward's new show, or people who wanted to see how the cliffhanger ended, etc - and they opted not to stick around). I guess we'll see!

I'd be really curious to find out how the DVR numbers from this season compare to last season. There are obviously a lot of dedicated NY fans watching the show at a later time, on DVR or OnDemand or CBS.com (etc). Most TV shows aren't of the 'gotta sit down and watch it when it airs' variety these days, and NY isn't exactly something that most people chat about over the water cooler.

Me too. I hope it's higher than last season's which shows that people want to watch NY but they just can't resist going out every Friday night.
