Low challenge entries - why are you not entering?

As a beginner I think giving caps is a good idea, firstly because it is quicker and doesnt involve long searches, and secondly because it means people are voting more for the style, skill and ideas that someone has not necessarily for the picture/favourite character.

As far as the categories go, I think that should be up to the person running it, they know how many entries they are getting etc. Its tough going up against advanced/intermediates if you are a beginner but everyone has to start somewhere, and often the person running gives a recognition award.

Well I think that the way of voting is something to take on count is true that sometimes it seems like people vote for their favorite characters I mean maybe a parameter of voting should be given..and I think the recognition awards should be always given because give like a motivation to all to keep trying.
Regards

Well, I have no particular reason. I haven't clicked on Fanart since AUGUST  I'm sorry. But now I'm back and I'll enter the challenges.
Andreina, I agree with you on the voting-for-fave-characters theory, though I don't think we could ever change that.

I haven't entered many challenges before. I am a beginner and I need time to explore stuff, and even though I could certainly use challenges for that, the problem is time. School is really keeping me busy from any experiences...

I still keep voting and I love to see everyone's artwork :) I have noticed the problem with the low entry numbers. I migh try to do something for the next challenges, as the two next weeks aren't as busy for me as the last ones have been. I can't promisse anything though.

I see how hard this has been for the mods and the challenge runners *hugs to all of you* Thanks for trying to solve the issue ;) Personally, I can't think of a way of increasing the entries

*GASP* how DARE you not enter this thread since August! *chains you to fanart*

That's why I usually encourage people (at least when challenges first start) to do one character per challenge. But I have no power over that. It sucks seeing all the problems and not being able to do anything about it. Vera and I have tried our hardest, but we can't please everyone. But that shouldn't stop you, don't be afraid to send us PMs with suggestions, we don't bite.......hard

Because some of us are real new at it and not sure of our skills yet (that's my reason ). I can use anywhere from 1 to 3 different programs to make 1 icon, and don't ask me about brushes - I'm not sure I've ever used one. And, Oh, I don't have any instruction for these 3 programs so it gets real interesting.

Ok I am going to bump this thread up. I think we are in a different situation now then when I originally started this thread. It appears that we are getting enough beginner entries in most challenges. Where we are lacking is in intermediate and advanced. I am just wondering what we can do to increase the advanced entries again. I know I have tried to do voting in different areas (like best text, etc) and I have also allowed for different size icons (ex 140x140) I also asked for challenge ideas and only received ideas from a few people. I am hoping with the premieres starting next week that our entries will increase with the new caps that will be out. I know that in the Miami icon challenge - i am up for any and all ideas, comments, suggestions, etc.

Hey Kat...

I think it would help if the runners of the Challange decided where the icons belong.

I'm not complaining in any way, but alot of those beginner icons look like Intermediate. I've also noticed that alot of winners seem to keep entering in beginners after they've won banners. *Runs from evil looks*:lol:

So another idea to increase icons, might be to change the rules.

Maybe after winning two beginners, we have to move up to intermediate. Then after two intermediate wins, move up to advanced.

Just a couple ideas that might help:)

See that can be an issue as we are supposed to be the neutral party in all of this. There was that Where Do I Belong thread for a while but that has seen better days. And if we start deciding then we might place someone in the wrong one and they would get upset and see no point in participating because they feel they don't have a chance.

There is a rule that if someone wins three times in Beginners they move up and so on. Though there is the issue Kat raised about not having enough Intermediate entries, and having to choose between Beginners and Advanced sometimes people don't want to get flattened in Advanced.

So another idea to increase icons, might be to change the rules.
Change them how? Could you elaborate on this please?

You've answered all my ideas with a response.

So I'll just leave it at that.:) Most that stuff I wasn't aware of.

Thanks

Some of us (like me) don't feel we have the equipment to compete in advanced. I make my icons and banners on picnik.com or a program called PictureIt Express 2000 (which is on a Windows '98 computer) and my wallpapers on a program called PrintMaster. I can't afford a fancier program and there's only so much these can do. I look at the stuff in advanced and say there's no way I can compete with that. :(

My question would be, if you win three times in beginners you should move up to Intermediate. Is that winning meaning coming in first place or 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.

I took that as winning first place, three times. I've come in first a couple of times between all the challenges and 2nd, 3rd, 4th also. I'm willing to try Intermediate.

As for the icon challenges, I know a lot of people want to keep 100x100 size, but I would like to see an increase, considering you can have bigger icons on this site.

I would love the size to 140x140, as that's the biggest size you can have, but I'd be happy with 120x120. I think with the bigger size, you might be able to do more with the icon.

Anyways, that's my thoughts.

^^ I sort of old school when it come to icons  I think that the 100x100 seems to work well with challenges but maybe we could try the idea that you can you enter 1/2 140x140 icons in all the icons challenges, seeing as Kat's already started this idea, but I cant remember how well it is working [kat?]

I think thats a good point. I think when there is an intermediate option when someone has won one and then placed a few times they are more willing to make the small step rather than the larger step to advanced. Although for some challenges, like the NY icon challenge, there is not an intermediate option although would start considering it after reading these posts.

Ok I did some research in the Challenge Guide Thread and found this:

Okay, so we’ve asked tons of opinions and I’ve gotten help from people from other boards who run sites that are strictly for art purposes. I’ve heard the same answer from almost everyone, and it looks like the criteria idea is the one that is going to stick. So, in my lousy attempt to make all of this make sense (especially since I took 3 hour test this morning) please bear with me. Cinegirl and I have made our decision, and here is how it is going to go:

First off, these are guidelines. They are not written in stone, because we understand that some circumstances are different than others. BUT I would like everyone to read them and use them so that you can determine what category you are in if there is a beginner and advanced challenge. Se we really encourage you guys to use them and put yourselves in the right category. We’re doing it this way so that no one feels like they are getting their toes stepped on. We still want you guys to pick your categories and have as much freedom as possible.

Here are the guidelines for entering into advanced. If you feel you do not meet these, you might consider beginners.:

1. Icon makers who have been at it for six months or more.

2. Knowledge of coloring, textures and brushes is wide.

3. Consider how many tutorials you have gone through, they make you a heck of a lot better. The more you followed, the more towards advanced you have become. Also consider how much you have used them since you followed the tutorial.

4. Look at the compliments you get. If someone seems amazed at your icon, and uses it without requesting it, that’s saying something. Consider how many times this has happened to you.

5. This is the most important one. If you have won Three or more challenges in one particular area of art (icons, banners, ect) then move up to advanced, give someone else a chance to win beginners :D.

6. Take what you know about fanart, and compare it to what you have seen. Where would you put yourself?

7. This one probably trumps number 5. Use your absolute best judgment. Put yourself in the category you truly think you should be in, and if you aren’t sure, pm someone who can help you.

Note: For example, if you enter an advanced challenge for an icon, it does not mean you have to enter the same level for a wallpaper challenge, or a banner challenge, ect. Use your judgment for each category, and use the guidelines to help you pick a category.
Perhaps this will help people decide, at least for Beginners and Intermediates, where they belong. :)

ETA:

If you have won Three or more challenges in one particular area of art

Well the way I see challenge emphasized here is either placing first, second, third, and fourth where it applies or placing in three separate themed challenges in the same area (icons, banners, wallpapers).

Thanks for posting that WGG, that's answers everything I was wondering.:)

Just one question...

I like Blackflag, don't have photoshop. I just use what is available on Photobucket Editor.

Which isn't to bad. But it doesn't have brushes and things like that. Just Distort, tint, color, effects, and decorates.

So for us who don't photoshop, is there any free programs that are available?

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this question:confused:
