^ brushes are little signs which are usually made by other people and which you can download from different websites/communities.

here is an example how an icon looks with and without a brush:

Credit for the icons goes to smugfaction.

Note that you are not allowed to use self-made brushes either, but placing text itself on your icon is ok. If you are not using an advanced graphics program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, you might not have the Brush option, whatsoever. If so, you don't have much to worry about.
