This isn't really a CSI: NY topic. I'm going to go ahead and send it to Fan Art; if the Fan Art mods feel its better suited to another forum (maybe QSF?) they can send it on. :)

Thanks Top! First I was a bit surprised to see your name in one of "our" threads, down here in Fan Art, but then I got it
Erm, well, yeah, back on topic:

how to make screencaps...

I always make screencaps with PowerDVD, there is a small camera on the navigation bar, that's for "Save Frame" aka making screenshots. Under "Configuration" you can change the settings where to save the shots/pics, in which format and which size. This program was pre-installed, so I don't know how much it'll cost if you need to buy it. Another possibility is the AVS DVD Player though I don't know anymore where to find the screenshot option it's worth to try it, it's for free ;)
Windows Media Player also has a screenshot option, check out this link - can't explain it better. The "problem" is, with WMP it's not possible to make several shots in a row, only one shot, stop it, paste the picture into your graphics program, and so on... with PowerDVD you just click on the camera every time you want a capture and it'll be saved in a folder - pretty easy.

I hope I could help in any way, I'll keep the thread in Fan Art for now, cause mainly people need to know this when they're planning to make s/th Fan Artish :D
Let me all know if it'd be better in QSF, OK?

PowerDVD doesn't work for me when the video is Xvid, any advice?
Does anybody have one of those programs that make automatic screencaps?
Thanks in advance.

I use VLC media player to make screencaps. It is free software, which is great. I usually have it set to autocap every 20 or 25 frames, and I only use it for screencapping (as I have no idea how to change it back to using it to just view normally). I used this tutorial to set it up to screencap, it looks a little confusing imo, but it does work, although you probably won't need to use all the steps, and if anyone does want to use it I'm happy to help you out if you get confused. :)

It takes a while, but there's a way you can do it without a program, probably better if you only want a few from a certain part of the episode. This is what I do anyways:

Put the DVD into your computer or laptop, and watch it on a media player.
Pause at the part you want a cap of.
Press the prntscrn button on your keyboard.
Go to Paint.
Press ctrl+v
Crop it.
Save it.

Voila. It is sort of a lot of steps though, a program for it would definitely be easier.

I don't have any advice as far as "free" programs go, but if you're looking for automatic screen caps from an inexpensive program, I use Frameshots. It's exceedingly simple to use, with only a few options to tweak before you plug in a video and let it do its thing. I only ever use it for .avi files (which I convert from dvd), but I'm positive it can handle just about any video file you choose to use (provided you have the required codecs). What's also nice is that it gives you the ability to manually screen cap from a video.. you can choose how many milliseconds you want to be able to skip forward and backward at a time to find the perfect shot.. etc. :)

The program is updated to version 2.1.0.0 !

New word in your home video-collectioning! From now Video Thumbnails Maker is coming with Video Thumbnails Viewer! The main advantage of the Viewer is the ability to start the related video right from the Viewer! The process is automatic in activated version. In usual version you can set the link between the picture and the video-file manually within the Viewer.

I have a request to all users of the program. Please help to spread the program all around the Internet! Many people just don't know about the program. Making news, forum topics, telling your friends about the utility should be very helpful.
