Mr. Brooks finds <font color=yellow>Marg Helgenberger</font> (Catherine Willows) in a very different role.
In Mr Brooks, <font color=yellow>Kevin Costner</font> plays Earl Brooks, a successful man with a dark side who must try to keep his criminal activities secret. Helgenberger stars as Brooks' wife. "If Mr. Brooks didn't have his wife, Emma, he'd probably self-destruct," <font color=yellow>Raynold Gideon</font>, co-writer of the screenplay, told Movies Online. "When he comes home to her, it's all loving and beautiful and that's what holds him together."
Emma Brooks is "all about her family and she truly believes she has a very happy marriage," Helgenberger said. "Sure, her husband might go off for hours at a time, but there's a real trust there for her because she feels it's such a healthy relationship." Emma might suspect that there is something troubling her husband, but she doesn't ask questions. "Man of the Year cannot be a serial killer," Helgenberger said. "My husband can’t be a serial killer." When it comes to Helgenberger herself, Costner said that he "appreciated her acting and how beautifully she embodied the good wife."
Mr. Brooks was partially filmed during Helgenberger's hiatus from CSI. "I actually shot some of it while shooting CSI and then came back to finish this…they gave me a week and a half off," she said. Comparing Mr. Brooks to the criminals that Catherine Willows encounters on CSI, Helgenberger said, "I don't think I've ever encountered anybody as brilliant or who thought out his crimes so well." She also said that Mr. Brooks is "more than just the ultimate bad guy. He's more complex and interesting than that."
