Fic: Darkness Into Light-eventual Smacked

MacsGirlMel

Mac's Personal Assistant
This is my attempt finally at a longer fic than I'm used to...I had planned on beta'ing it but kinda lost contact...so I hope it's halfway decent. I don't think I'm as fast an updater as Linda, but I'll try not to go too long between posts.

This first chapter may be rather short; I am so not good at doing a buildup and often go right to the punch but want to keep the suspense too. Later ones will be longer I hope. Please, if anyone has any critque or concrit to give me, don't hesitate :)

Summary: Mac's life is changed forever by an apparent attempt on his life. Can Stella help him find new hope as he struggles to cope with the changes?

Edit: I wanted to call it Blind Faith, but it's too late to edit or delete. Grr.

Chapter 1

Mac locked up his office and headed out to go home after another long workday. As was so typical of him, he'd worked late, trying to finish just a few more papers from the never-shrinking pile awaiting his attention. Quite a few of his people had already gone home for the night, but some were still working late, visible in amongst the night shift workers on the job.

He made his way into the locker room, stopping at his locker to get his coat and a couple other things, then headed out to the parking area. The garage was well-lit, but fairly quiet this time of night, and the only sounds he heard were traffic out on the streets and his footsteps on the concrete.

He, like most people, always waited until he was almost at his car to use his remote, and as he approached, he clicked the button, expecting to hear the brief horn honk and see the flash of lights that signaled his vehicle was unlocked.

As soon as he clicked the button, though, his world exploded into a mass of confusion that lasted only a few seconds, yet seemed like an eternity: Blinding light. Deafening sound. Searing heat pain, parts of his skin feeling as though they were on fire. Acrid, choking smoke.Vibrations that shook the ground and knocked from his feet. Then, finally, darkness.

Now, we'll see how Linda likes being left hanging *evil laugh* Obviously he doesn't die though.

*G* *Snort*** haaa...Take your time Melly. As you already said he doesn't die. So now I know I can wait and not for death:lol::guffaw:

Great start Melly. Update soon:):)

Chapter 2

Mac awoke slowly, his return to consciousness something of a struggle. People only wake up fast in the movies, in real life it takes time. For a while he drifted in and out, aware of things vaguely for a time before falling back to sleep. When he finally became coherent enough to stay awake, he could tell that he was in a hospital.

He could feel the bandages on different parts of his body, and the tubes and wires he was connected to. He could smell the sting of antiseptic and a discomforting, faint smell of burned flesh. There was also the scent of perfume, one of the kinds Stella wore. But heavy bandages covered his eyes, and he couldn't see. He remembered some of the explosion, but the memories were disjointed, difficult to make sense of. The pain, the sensation of fire was there, but muted, distant, making it obvious he was on heavy doses of pain medication.

He must have moved slightly, because he heard Stella talk to him.

"I think he's awake. Mac? Can you hear me? I know you can't talk yet until they get that tube out, but squeeze my hand if you can hear me."

Mac responded, moving his head a little on instinct even though he couldn't see.

"Hey...I'm glad you're awake. We all are...I'm the only one here right now but we've all been worried about you. We all knew you could make it, but it was still frightening."

He wanted desperately to speak, and was relieved when the doctor took out the breathing tube. His throat was sore and raw, but he rasped out the words anyway as he and Stella talked.

"Mac do you remember...do you know what happened to you?"

"Explosion...I remember some...all disjointed though...How bad...?"

"Yes, your car blew up. You got some nasty burns and hit your head when you were knocked to the ground. The doctor thinks you'll be okay but it's going to take a while. We don't know yet who planted the bomb, but we're working on it, I promise we'll find out who did it and get them for you."

Mac moved his hand up to touch his bandaged face, curious though careful. "My eyes..."

"They're bandaged up so they can heal for a few days. You'll be okay once the bandages are off."

But there was something in her voice, he could tell she was holding back. Plus, he could feel something, a difference on the left side of his face, the left eye.

"Tell me...you know more..." he tried to make himself sound as strong as he could in his weakened state. "Something's wrong...I can tell."

Stella sighed. "I just...I wasn't sure if I should because I know you won't like it...but you won't let it go, I know you. You'll keep pushing until someone tells you." She took a breath. "You did sustain some eye injuries. The right eye you should still be able to see out of although the doctor won't know how much until the bandages come off. But the left one, they had to take it out. It was too damaged to save. Mac I'm sorry...I know what this will do to your career..."

Mac's hand squeezed hers tightly, his mind reeling. He knew that even if the one eye was fine, he would never get back in the field without both. He believed he could, but Sinclair and the others wouldn't. He could still process a scene with only one eye, but he would be open to attack from his blind side, they would say. And the bigger problem that even he recognized was, a person can see okay with only one eye, but without images from both, there can be no depth perception, no way to judge distance. Mac wouldn't be able to drive, and worse in his case, no one would trust him with a gun. His police career was essentially ruined. He felt numb, unsure now what his future would hold.

*dodges thrown objects* relax, he still has Stella lol

What? Mac lost his left eye?! :( Please tell me it's just a bad dream. Stella would be very busy. She have to solve the case and help Mac to deal with the aftermath.

Sorry, nope...but he'll still get happy again with her. We know how she can make him happy  Just bare with me like you do Linda, K? hehe (take note of my mention in the other thread of the dog too)

This is great. I love reading stories like this.
Keep going.. can't wait to see how Mac and Stella make it through this.

I'm glad you're liking it, I'm nervous since it's my first longer fic. :) I want it to be realistic but sometimes it's hard to get the thoughts together in my brain to type them.

I just thought of something after visiting the spoiler thread...Mac will have to find a new way to do the Marine Death Glare lolol...but I think with the one eye and the patch he's getting, he can still look pretty mean hehe.

ETA no update tonight, I want to be able to give it enough time to get it right. Tomorrow, I hope.

I'll try to give you a little tonight.

Mac almost felt as though it might've been better if he'd died. He knew that there were other important things that he had besides his job, but being a detective meant a lot to him, and it was hard to even think about not being one. He had a feeling of hopelessness.

"I feel like I don't have anything...like everything important to me is gone. I can't think of...doing anything else. Of not being able to be...in the field. I don't know how...to do anything else."

"I know it's going to be hard...I can't begin to understand what you're feeling...but I know it's got to be painful." Stella said. "The one thing I know is that you still have a lot to give, even if you can't do it as a police officer. I believe you have the strength to make it through and find a way. And as far as feeling as though you've lost everything...It's not hard to see why you feel that way. But whether you know it or not, you do have a family of sorts. I know none of us are related, but we all look out for each other and do what we can to be there for each other. They're already said that even if you aren't our boss anymore, they still want to do whatever they can to help."

"One thing I do always have...is you." said Mac. "Seems like no matter...how bad my life gets...you're there to help...look out for me...not let me give up...It means a lot."

"I'll always be there as long as you want me to. And you're right,I'm not about to let you give up. I know that's just not you...Mac Taylor doesn't quit. But just as importantly, I don't want to see anything happen to you. You mean a lot to me."

"I want you with me... I have a lot to face, I know it...and I don't know... if I can do it alone. I can say...I appreciate everyone's help...but there's no one I'd rather have...helping me along. than you. I can't say that...I won't still struggle...that the dispair will leave right away...but I'm willing to try my best."

"That sounds more like the Mac I know" Stella would have offered a smile if he could see it. She did squeeze his hand instead though.
