Dark.
Everything was dark; her spirit, her soul, her surroundings, her feelings. Everything around her that was good found a way to twist itself into a sinister plot against her. Her head lifted only to look into pure obscurity. The broken woman who lay on the floor where this tale takes place was despondent, rundown, and low.
She held a single bottle in her sweaty little hand. It was filled with the poison that she needed to forget, even if it was just for a few moments. On her forehead, beads of sweat trickled down and plopped onto the hardwood floor with a splash. The contrast of the cool wall and her warm body made her shiver as she thought of the days events.
Her day had started out innocent enough. She went to work like she usually did. On her face she wore the instantly recognizable and distinctive Calleigh Duquesne smile. Her day had gone considerably well up until the point where the love of her life, Timothy Speedle, stood her up on their date.
The Grapevine. That was where Tim was supposed to meet her. It was a nice little restaurant just outside of town that had a beautiful ocean view. Cal had dressed up in a small red gown that accented all the right curves and hid all of the unflattering parts of her body, not that there were many. The waiter showed her to her table, and after the first half hour, Calleigh thought that maybe he’d just hit traffic, since it was around rush hour. The next hour proved her wrong. She’d already gone through three glasses of wine and a coffee. Eventually, she gave up and went home. The waiter sympathized for her, and even showed her to her car. Calleigh was grateful. At least someone cared.
She went home and collapsed onto the couch, just thinking. After about an hour of sober contemplation, she decided that it wasn’t enough. She got up and went to the whiskey cabinet. She grabbed one of the bottles and quickly took a sip of dry alcohol. It burned as it went down her throat, but she didn’t care. Soon, she was going to forget.
A few hours passed, and she found herself on the floor. She had no idea how she got there, or what happened in those last few minutes, but as soon as she looked to her right and saw the reflection of the bottle against the moonlight, she knew. She drank the whole bottle, and had collapsed onto the floor.
She heard a faint knock on her door, but made no effort to get up and answer it. Instead, she groaned a little and turned on her side, hoping the massive migraine she had would subside, it didn’t. She purged, and groaned some more. She had chugged the whole bottle of whiskey in one setting. For a small girl like Calleigh, that was never a good thing.
Eventually, she got up and went to the bathroom, emptying her stomach once more before going to the person who was still knocking on the door. She opened it up and saw Tim standing there, in a nice suit and everything. The only flaws were the fact that the suit looked worn, like he’d taken it on and off several times today.
“What do you want?” Calleigh asked, on the brink of tears. She wasn’t going to give in, Tim just wasn’t worth her tears. Tim looked at the tattered dress she was wearing. She hadn’t changed since she got in. Her hair was tossed and knotted, and she had picked up the empty whiskey bottle. She wanted to throw it in the trash, but had forgotten. There were small bags under her beautiful green eyes, and worry lines on her forehead that usually were buried by her brilliant smile and disposition.
“Calleigh, I came here to tell you why I didn’t come today,” Tim explained. Calleigh was about to shut the door in his face. She didn’t want to deal with this. She wasn’t feeling good, and she just wanted to be left alone.
“I don’t have time for this right now Tim, it’s late,” she told him. Tim stopped her from shutting the door, and let himself in. He’d noted the empty bottle in her hand.
“Have you been drinking Cal?” he questioned. Calleigh didn’t respond, she didn’t have to explain anything if she didn’t want to. He put two fingers under her chin and lifted her head up so that he could see her eyes. “You have,” he answered himself, looking at her dilated pupils and tired visage. Suddenly, she pushed away from him without warning and looked straight into his eyes.
“Don’t touch me,” she said angrily. “You stood me up! Do you know how stupid that makes me feel, how embarrassed I was at the restaurant? I was there for an hour and a half Tim! Where were you?” she asked him, screaming at him with all she had.
Tim couldn’t help but flinch a little when she yelled. He sighed and looked at the ground. “I was helping Eric with his date. He wanted to call her, and he didn’t want to mess up, because he’s really serious about her, so I went over there and only planned on staying a few minutes, but Eric was hesitant to call her.”
Calleigh stood there, dumbfounded. He’d missed their date because he was helping Eric. She didn’t think that it wasn’t noble, but she also knew that he could have controlled the situation better than he did. He could have told Eric about their date, but maybe it just wasn’t important enough to him.
After the shock sank in, she shook her head and laughed a little. “Just leave me alone Speedle,” she said as she turned and walked into the kitchen to get herself some aspirin and water to ease the pain of her migraine. Tim followed her, and wrapped his arms around her from behind, which surprised her, and caused her to turn around and bat her hands on his chest.
“What do you think you’re doing? Stop it!” she screamed as she struggled in his grasp.
“Calleigh, Calleigh! Just listen to me, for five seconds, alright?” he asked as she calmed down and began to sob in his arms. “I didn’t want to stand you up, but Eric was an emotional wreck. I couldn’t just leave him like that Cal, he’s my best friend.”
“Then what am I?” Cal countered. Speed had to stop and think for a minute. What was their relationship? Hell, he didn’t know, and he bet that she didn’t either.
“I don’t know Calleigh, that’s why I set up that date with you, I wanted to find out.”
“Oh, so if we’re going by that date then I guess I’m nothing to you,” she spat angrily. Tim shook his head and slowly let her go.
“If you meant nothing to me, do you think I’d be here right now?” he asked her. She looked down and sighed a bit.
“You’re right, I’m sorry,” she told him as she ran a hand through her hair. “It’s just that when you called me to go on a date, I was so excited. I wore the best dress I could find, I wore my finest jewelry, I wanted to impress you, and then you didn’t show up and I was devastated.”
Tim tilted his head to the side and took a hold of her hand. “You really wanted to impress me?” he asked as he took a step towards her. Calleigh just nodded. “Calleigh, you don’t have to do anything to impress me, all you have to do is be yourself,” he said soothingly. Cal just nodded and looked up at him.
“I want us to be more than friends,” she said hoarsely. “But….I know it’s just not that easy,” she finished.
Tim shook his head and pulled her close. “Yes it is Calleigh, he protested. He reached down and kissed her softly on the lips, hoping he wasn’t taking it too far too fast. He pulled away to look down at her eyes, which hadn’t yet opened. In fact, he got a little worried when a few moments later they still weren’t opened.
Speed was relieved when she heard her say, “do it again.” He smiled and reached down, kissing her ever so softly on the lips as he’d done just moments before. Calleigh wrapped her arms around him and held him close to her as they kissed. When they both needed air, they pulled away.
Calleigh was the first to speak. “Stay with me,” she asked, which caused Tim to be a bit puzzled. “Stay with me,” she said more again. Tim just smiled and nodded.
“Always Calleigh, always.”
