Well, Hawkes is an 'encyclopedia of tidbit information" so I'd say he's probably like me--he knows lots of crap that is really random but hey, you never know when it'll come in handy.
Hawkes also seems to be good at chess, which isn't necessarily relevant to being a CSI, but it might be an indicator of his general thought process. Very strategic and whatnot...which really doesn't help with defining his specialty. Does it count that he knew about JLo's ass-insurance?
Honestly, as far as Hawkes is concerned, I don't think he's been a CSI long enough to really develop a specialty. At this point I think it's safe to say that he's strongest when it comes to understanding the autopsies, cause of death, tox reports, etc. He ain't a doctor for nothing!
Mac seems to know a lot about weapons, yes, but Asian weapons in particular. The way that he talked about the weapons in "Corporate Warriors" sounded like he had a more intimate knowledge than when he was discussing the bow and arrow in "Stuck on You." He still had knowledge of the latter, but I think he has a preference for Asian weapons to judge by what we've seen so far.
And, you know, it might just be me, but I thought it was interesting that he knew a bit about Russia in "Blink" (knowing what the perp's name meant, etc). I've often wondered if that was meant to be relevant, but they haven't mentioned it since. *shrug*
Stella is good with guns, yes. And I'd venture to say she probably knows a good deal about rifles/snipers/etc as well as handguns, because of the way she put that baby together in "Officer Blue."
And of course, she knows about dancing, but that's about as helpful right now as Hawkes playing chess--it gives a bit of info about the character and how she might think/work, but not what she's good at as far as forensics is concerned.
Danny
does seem to be on the computer a good bit. Of course, he also seemed to know about art in "Tri-borough" when he was testing that painting for a forgery. Like with Mac and the weapons, you get the sense that he's not just sharing information that he just read out of a book, it's something that he actually
knows about.
Linday we don't know much about. But I don't think we can necessarily assume that she knows about animals. She knew the info about tigers in "Zoo York," but she also said she spouts off information when she's nervous--a trait that I haven't seen her exhibit since. In fact, it sounds a bit like what they had for Hawkes, so maybe they decided to leave that particular tendency for one character. She
does seem to do well in the lab, but so do the other characters, so that's not really something that's specific to her character. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything that really stands out as a specialty for her. Hopefully they'll remedy that this season.
(Although, I did think it was interesting that she knew about the spout of the teapot in "Corporate Warriors.")
And, you know, we really shouldn't leave out Flackie.
He's not a CSI, but he's part of the team and he's always so neglected, poor woobie.
Flack's specialty is snark, baby! He's good at the interrogating and the cuffing and the chasing-but-not-bruising-when-he-gets-kicked-in-the-face thing.
But he's also smart (probably smarter than he takes credit for being
), and he can mostly keep up with the CSIs when they're being all technical (although he's not afraid to speak up when he doesn't know what's going on).
