'CSI' Sees Ratings Slip, Still Remains #1 Scripted Show

CSI Files

Captain
According to the final ratings report for the 2005-2006 season, CSI saw a decrease in the ratings this year.

CSI ended the year in third place, right behind Tuesday and Wednesday's editions of American Idol, and averaged a totally of 25.2 million viewers. This marks Tuesday's American Idol's first ratings victory over CSI, but the latter still remains the most watched scripted show.

On a similar note, CSI: Miami, which averaged a total of 18.1 million viewers, managed to slip down a couple of spots as well, ending the season in 9th place. However, both shows still managed to retain a spot in the top ten most watched shows of the season.

But it was a good year for a couple of sophomore shows. Grey's Anatomy and House saw a monster increase in viewers this season (House is up a whopping 34 percent), ending the year in 5th and 10th place respectively. Grey's Anatomy will next year air opposite CSI in what some consider a bold move by ABC. Other sophomore shows weren't as lucky, however. Desperate Housewives also saw a decrease in numbers, and ABC's Lost is out of the list completely.

Despite the CSI ratings slip, however, CBS was still crowned most watched network for the 2005-2006 season. The network finished the race with four shows in the top ten most watched list (CSI, Miami, Without A Trace and Survivor), and averaged 12.3 million viewers. CBS's The Unit was TV's most-watched new drama, and the sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine the most watched new show.

I'm with abc. It's no great surprise. I almost stopped watching the show this season due to poor storylines. Unusual Suspect and Roshamama roped me back in, though... This just means that CSI has to step it up next season story-wise, I think.

id still rather watch it than american idol. i havent seen that show in years, i just got so sick of it. but i know people love it, i just cant take anymore. ill never stop watching csi. heck, i watch the daily repeats on spiketv every day  oh im addicted, bad

I can understand the slip in ratings. CSI:Miami in particular. Terrible season. It was just a waste of time. I guess the writers and producers are going to have to go back and look at what made the shows popular in the first place and tweak their storylines.

Seriously. Is anyone really THAT surprised, especially regarding Miami's ratings downward spiral? As for Miami, the fault is indisputably with the squalid writing and overall gross misdirection of everything that was genuine and gratifying as exemplified by Seasons 1-3.

Without Steven Maeda the entire Miami crew crumbled into gross incompetancy typified by their scrambling to even remember the original Miami canon (Note: their own self-admission!). Season 4 was a travesty and an embarrassment for all concerned, especially the producers and writing staff. Really, really sad and such an utter waste of a season.

With that said, we hope that some sustained glimmer of enlightenment will peek through in determined fashion in Season 5 i.e. after the the lot of them have gone through an intensive summer remedial writing and producing of a television series course, preferably from the illustrious Steven Maeda.

Steven Maeda, Miami and we have missed you something awful.

I agree completely with you TallyHo.

They've wasted a season and so much has happened in a short period of time that the quality of writing has gone down, the quality of acting has gone down and it seems the writers have lost the characters and what they used to be. Surely someone can fix this disaster before I hit myself over the head with a frying pan.

I can't speak for Miami, but, aside from a handful of people on here who claim CSI (original) was not well written this season, I think this season was much better than both seasons 4 and 5, and in fact, judging by the "ratings" and/or posts in the individual episode threads, there were many, many good episodes this year.

Think what you want to think, but the core audience on this board seems to agree that the episodes were definitely up to standards this season. I think the problem lies in the fact that, when a show is this good and it raises its own bar to an elevated height, that's when its own audience becomes like the British press: Quick to turn on you when the feeling arises. :p

It IS the number one scripted show in my opinion. Even when it has the occasional misfire (in my opinion) it still rests heads and shoulders above the rest of the pulp that's being shown on TV these days. I have good expectations for season 7 and I really don't think I'll be let down. :)

I have got mixed feelings when it comes to CSI's season 6. It wasn't better than season 5, but it did have some outstanding episodes which couldn't have been placed in the fifth season. I can't wait for season 7, but I would like more characters to have more screentime.

About Miami: Bottom of the barrell. Really. What happened to this show? It once had this great storylines, but now...

I'm not surprised Miami is down. Idol isn't even in a competitive slot. But why is there no mention of NY improving?

To each his or her own but I for one enjoy S4 very much. :D There isn't one episode from that season that I don't enjoy rewatching on DVD.

Season 5 is beginning to look much stronger in comparison to what a disappointment S6 became. The cases were much stronger even with the team split not that I want that to happen again.

I definately agree that poor writing hurt the mothership this season. How I long for the days of episodes written by Ann Donahue and Elizabeth Devine again. :(

I didn't say I didn't like seasons 4 or 5. Just that I think I enjoyed 6 more. And I think Goldfinger can give any of the writers a run for their money. :)

I enjoyed season 5, way more than season 4 and will probably (after thinking over this summer) like it more than season six.

I really liked the way things ran in season 5. And I have to say Naren Shankar showed his best work then. (Now it appears Sarah Goldfinger is taking the run) but it is all a matter of perception. :)

I have to agree with Baba and loves_csi . I think Season 6 of CSI has been brilliant so far. Better than season 4 and 5, with the exception of grave danger.
