CSI: New York--'Hung Out To Dry'

CSI Files

Captain
Synopsis:

The headless body of Amy Feider is discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in the Sigma Delta Theta sorority house during a party. While Mac, Stella, Hawkes and Lindsay examine the room and the body, Danny and Flack talk to the various partygoers, but get little to no information from the inebriated college students. Dr. Hammerback determines Amy's head was seared off, most likely with an acetylene torch, and notes that her blood alcohol level was at .26, an extremely high level. He also finds trace amounts of the date rape drug GHB in her system, though there's no sign that she was sexually assaulted. Coconut hair on her clothes leads the CSIs to Ethan Tierney, a fraternity guy wearing a coconut bikini. He admits to fooling around with Amy at the party, and tells Stella that he remembers her asking him to choke her during sex. He recalls doing it, but the amount of alcohol he consumed that night prevents him from remembering anything else.

Flack summons Mac and Stella to Central Park, where Amy's head has been discovered wrapped in part of the t-shirt found on her body. Using fluid from Amy's eyes, Sid is able to determine that the GHB found in Amy's system was produced by her body naturally after she died. In the lab, Stella puts the two pieces together and discovers an elaborate drawing and the words "Everything and Nothing." Hawkes identifies the drawing as a Hydra, a seven-headed beast that was slain by Hercules in Greek mythology. He notes that the hydra on the t-shirt only has six heads. They also notice a website url on the shirt: kodecon.com. Danny recalls a boy from the party named Shane wearing a similar t-shirt, and he and Mac go to speak to the young man. Shane tells them his t-shirt is from edoclaundry.com, a site that sells t-shirts with codes embedded in them that unlock chapters in an internet video narrative. He looks at the t-shirt found on Amy but says that it wasn't part of the edoclaundry series. He sends the CSIs to Washington Square Park, where a college student named John Hayes is selling the shirts. He's angry when he learns his concept is being ripped off. Back at the lab, Stella and Hawkes visit kodecon.com" and input "everything and nothing," which reveals a video of a young boy on rollerblades playing with a hockey stick.

Flack summons the CSIs to another crime scene: thirty-two-year old Kenneth Chandler's body is found propped up by a tree, railroad spikes impaling his eyes. His eyeballs are discovered in his pocket, and he's wearing a kodecon.com shirt, indicating his killer and Amy's are the same person. In the morgue, Sid and Mac discover dozens of eyes painted onto his torso. Hawkes examines the dye and determines it's the same as that used to make the t-shirts. Stella ponders the significance of the eyes--could they be derived from the Greek myth about Hera's 100-eyed dog Arbus, whose eyes she placed on the peacock's tail after Zeus killed the dog for spying on him? The code word from the shirt on Kenneth, consciousness, allows the CSIs to unlock another video, of a boy blowing bubbles. Using buildings in the background, Stella and Danny are able to triangulate the location where the footage was shot.

Great review.

I really liked this episode. Nothing against Peyton, Angell or Adam but Im glad it was - for the most part - just the team working the case. It got my brain working as well, even though I had an idea of who the killer was - and I was ultimately right - it was fun to try and figure out all the t-shirts and who the mythological creatures were.

. As soon as Danny labeled him the one "normal" guy among the drunken frat boys, I was sure Shane was the killer.

Haha, so true. When there are a few sober people at frat parties, it's understandable. But when it's just one guy, it's kinda shady

The ending does feel a little rushed, however. Having Lindsay tell Mac and Stella that Shane has escaped feels anti-climactic after such a thrilling episode

Completely agree. I was staring at my TV and was like, "Just what the F." They should've had Flack or Danny rush in and say something, just because they were there when he was arrested, and Flack would've probably been notified right..? Since he was the one who brought him in.

Great review, very speedy! I also pegged Furlong, but mainly because his participation on the show was heralded, and I knew his story had to be big.

I loved the Hawkes part, and was so pleased when he turned out to be the ME in question. Thought it was going to be Peyton from Mac's look of immediate concern, but no! Pleasant surprise, it was Hawkes. Love him.

Thanks, guys! :D

I actually thought of Hammerback first, but Peyton is a good guess as well. And, if it had been Peyton, there might have been worry that Shane actually would have gotten to her. With Hawkes, we know Shane probably isn't going to actually kill him, but given that Furlong is reportedly coming back, it makes for an interesting possible future storyline.

Yeah, that alone made him suspicious. No one is sober at parties like that. But Danny always does seem to trust the wrong people, so as soon as Danny deemed him okay I knew he wasn't. If Mac had trusted him, that might have been a different story.

I would think so. Maybe a scene with Danny and Flack driving back and hearing about the escape over the police radio would have been better. Something to get us from point A to point B and have it not feel so jarring.

Ok i have a question, why does everyone HATE lindsay!?!?  :( I love lindsay, she's my favorite character, I mean it's not her fault, on what the producers give her!!!!  but i do agree it's good there was no D/L action in this epi cuz they're pushing the D/L thing way too much!! I am a huge D/L fan, and even I agree that they've gotta tone it down a lot, if they want to get it across the screen, they should do it like they did with Mac and Peyton, u know at the beginning the show they're together, and then leave it alone until the end, where they show it again, and then just don't show it in other episodes, cuz that way u know they're together, but it's not shoved in ur face!!!

But seriously i was pissed that Lindsay faded into the backround :(, i really like lindsay, but i just wish they'd let her character develope, without danny, cuz with danny, she just can't she has too much to fall back on!!! it's like dude just back off!!! i need my space!!

But seriously stop dissin' Linds , i love her, and i love Danny, but maybe for once, in an episode, he can fade into the backround and let her develop!!!

Calm down, Svetlana. Nobody is suggesting that you can't love Lindsay, or D/L, but everyone on this site is entitled to their own opinions, including the reviewer.

However, I'm not sure exactly what the point of your post was. You seem to be implying that other fans on this site should stop 'dissing' Lindsay, but much of what you've said is very similar, if not identical, to many of the things that other people say when they express their dislike of the character. I have to admit it's confusing.

In any case, the appropriate response isn't to put lots of angry faces and exclamation points, and tell other people to basically shut up. It isn't going to change our opinions, and it only makes you look immature. Express your own opinion, but please don't tell us not to express ours. Thanks.

I don't think everyone hates Lindsay--certainly, she has fans on this site--but many feel that she's a weak character, and after a year of being on the show, there's not much excuse for that. I found myself relieved during this episode that she was in the background, and that's not good. Ideally on a show you want to look forward to seeing all the characters, but that's just not the case for me with Lindsay. I think a real effort needs to be made to improve the character, and that doesn't mean shoving her in Danny's face, or vice versa. I'm hoping the revelation of her secret will help make her a character in her own right, but the inconsistancy bothers me.
