CSI missing its flair?

I've been on the boards for a while hearing about people missing Grissom. In the beginning I didn't understand why people missing him so badly. I always insisted that Grissom wasn't the key of success of CSI, but the formula. Now, I've been watching the new episodes (at least those that landed in Holland), and I've comparing them with the earlier season with Grissom. I noticed, I didn't enjoy much of the series as I used to be.

In the past, we had Grissom a scientific, socially well developed insect specialist, who gets fascinated by simplifities, i.e. a strip dancer, who tried charm Grissom, or seeing him observing a homeless person collecting stuff.... Those kind of fascinating reactions and his feedbacks on it are missing. At present, without Grissom, these kind of funny elements are no more, since neither of the current characters are fulfilling this conditions.

My question is, if there's a new character that completely fulfil all the characteristics of Grissom, except being an insect specialist, would that return the flair of the CSI we get used to have in the past?

I went for the no...
A few reasons... first I don't think you should try to get something back that completely fulfil all the characteristics... Grissom is unique in his character...

Furthermore I don't think CSI is missing its flair (to be clear on this... it's my opinion (a humble one) ) I do believe though that the novelty has become less and less, with the addition of NY and Miami, and other shows based more or less on the same principle...

As much there are people who are missing Grissom, I think there will be the same amount of people who aren't missing Grissom...

I wouldn't mind if Grissom would occur now and then in the upcoming episodes...and if not... it's ok too...

I say no, also. Grissom was one of a kind and I don't think even if they have a character similar to him it would make a difference. Often it is not just the character but the actor that plays him. William Petersen is a huge reason Grissom worked. You can't replace him either.

WOW not at all, I hardly remember him, that was then and this is now. I feel that Laurence Fishburne is phenomenal and kicking a.. on CSI, his low-key cool, sweet, gentle deameanor has to me, brought the team to a higher level of calmness. And he's so smooth and classy. They've embraced him and him them. Actually their similiar in personailty. Not my opinion, but what the writers have delivered to the fans. He never gets angry at any of them where Grissom was always mad at one of them, I like that. The gruesomness is bad enough, so to see the team so in tune is a beautiful thing. And the stories are just as good as ever. For me if I was that disapointed, I wouldn't watch the show. there's so many to choose from now.

I think I'm gonna say no also

CSI has done alright w/o Grissom, oh sure once in awhile I miss him like while watching old episodes or reading fanfics

CSI did lose a lot of it's flair or something for awhile there in season 9 right after The Grave Shift, I feel like the ptb completely and hopelessly lost their minds after Grissom left and they just forgot the basics

In season 10 things got MUCH better, tptb were finally starting to get their heads screwed on straight, but still something was missing

Here in season 11 with all the character develpment has what really made this season shine :thumbsup: having Zuiker back has also made things better

And you can't just go and make a cloned copy of Grissom, it just wouldn't be right, and I can only see WP playing him

For a new character, it doesn't have to be an insect person, Nick has been taking care of that role, next new person I want to be a woman, maybe a well known actress or even someone completley unknown doesn't matter to me

Another thing I forgot to mention is that Grissom was constantly insulting and putting down Hodges, & Langston actually went with him to the "Dinosaur" exhibit, with him. Who's ever gone out with Hodges on a one to one? He tries really hard to understand him. That's kinda of refreshing too~

Another thing I forgot to mention is that Grissom was constantly insulting and putting down Hodges, & Langston actually went with him to the "Dinosaur" exhibit, with him. Who's ever gone out with Hodges on a one to one? He tries really hard to understand him. That's kinda of refreshing too~

Well Grissom isn't a people person and he just didn't know how to handle Hodges

Exactly, but he worked with PEOPLE, so he should have learned in 9 years how to deal with everyone, Ray's only been there 2-1/2 years, and no problems

Definitely No. IMO it's not the loss of Grissom that's brought the show down, because the show started to go downhill way before WP left. It's the change in the formula of the writing that's brought things to a lower standard. The writers lost their focus on what made this show so great to begin with - interesting cases, forensics, "small" glimpses of our characters' personal lives, and cases that aren't exclusively murder/dead bodies -- not continuous CSI-in-Peril, serial killer storylines that get overplayed, etc

We all have our faults, (even Ray does) we're not perfect that's what makes everyone human and just cause your around something all the time doesn't mean you know how to deal with it

On Ray "beating" up someone, if you're refering to "Blood Moon" when he held the guy down with his cane, he didn't beat him up. with Nick's approval, who's his superior who was fending off his buddies, and on disobeying orders hunting down the serial killer on his own, and did get busted, and Cath sent him home and he went home. Then Nick came by to tell him "we're a team" and conforted him then Greg and Sara came by with food. Everyone one has faults of course, I basically was talking about how he blends/meshes and bonds with his co-workers, which he does.

How so? I've been working alongside people for ten years and I still have major problems with social interaction. Grissom was the only one I could connect with on the show because of his social ineptness.

Besides, back then Hodges was a smart ass. Everyone was picking on him :lol:

As for the question, I'm not actually sure what I'm being asked. Would the show be better with a Grissom replica? No, like people have said he's his own unique character.

Do I think the show has lost its 'flair'? Yes, way back in Season 8/9 when forensics was pushed more to the side in favour of more character development. I much preferred the show back in the day because they focused on the science and not the characters, and when their lives weren't being endangered every second episode .

That's not the only time Langston has been rough with a suspect.

I would go with 'no' because no one could replace Grissom. I agree with Sharp and that it's Billy Petersen who made Grissom. I miss Grissom.

Langston is a completely different character and cannot and should not be compared to Grissom. First he isn't the boss, no matter how many times he thinks he is.

As for how Grissom treated Hodges, Hodges was basically 'in love' (for lack of a better term :lol with Grissom. Hodges got on Grissom's nerves. And frankly it made for some very funny scenes. :lol: Like when Grissom asked Hodges if he was stalking him now. :lol:

Hodges treated Langston completely different and isn't annoying with him.

So you can't compare how Grissom treated Hodges to how Langston treats him, because Hodges treated both of them differently. Langston wanted to win Hodges over, Grissom didn't want to or need to. Basically, Hodges brought it on himself. He annoyed EVERYONE. Still does.

And, again, like Sharp said, Grissom wasn't a people person and Ray is. They are two completely different personality types. Besides you never had a problem with the way Grissom treated people until he left the show.

Langston has his faults as do ALL the characters. That's what makes them human. :shifty:

I think the show is different without Grissom in the aspect that it isn't much of the ensemble it once was. That was WP doing.

I think Zuiker being back has a lot to do with it, as well.

I don't put the blame on Fishburne or Langston. I do like Langston, however I don't like how tptb have handled his character.

It's tptb who are the problem.
