^That actually pretty good for your first icon on photoshop FFF. Maybe sharpening the image a bit (by going to filters>sharpen>sharpen (I think this is right lol, not in my photoshop so doing this of the top of my head)). Also the text is a little small and is too much like the background colour so it doesn't really stand out well enough, maybe try using black. Also experiment with the colouring a bit more I could give you links to lj tutorials if you like, just let me know. But like I said at the starting, great job for your first attempt.

Thanks shazza! And thanks for the tips, I appreciate them and would love some links to lj tuturials.

Here's another I made as a request on LiveJournal. I didn't use photoshop for this one, just my usual programs.

I actually disagree about the text. It doesn't overpower or distract from the image, and blends in nicely and subtly. I think you did an excellent job with it. That said, 'if you could' is a bit hard to read.

Just wondering, what were you using before now? I am really surprised to find out that you weren't using PS  Your icons have always looked very pretty.

I'd say he looks a bit oversharpened there, rather than blurry. My favorite tool for sharpening on PS is the High Pass tool, which is under Filters. I'd recommend a Channel Mixer that subtracts some blue from the red channel, that adds a bit of green to the red and that mixes the blue and green, particularly making the green more bluish. I'd use a screen layer or two and a soft lighting level as I think the cap looks like it started out lower quality (through no fault of yours). There's a small amount of rainbowy oversharpening going on by his eyes, and a soft light layer could help with that. So I'd say maybe 2 screen layers followed by a soft light layer @ between 50 and 85%. Then a curves or levels layer to bring out the lighter parts in his face and make him glow a bit more. Personally, I've had quite a few particularly good experiences with the 'Auto' options for PS coloring -- autocolor as well as auto buttons on curves and levels.

Thank you happyharper! I use picnik to make my icons normally. I don't know much about ps yet, so I'm learning and thanks for the input! I will try all of that out! I don't know much about layers either and nothing about curves, lol! But I'm willing to learn. :)
