Criminal Minds #4: We Take Care Of Our Own!

Ask Ausiello

Question: Do you have anything on Criminal Minds? —Brandon

Ausiello: The long-running CBS procedural is hiring a woman to do a man’s job (i.e. kill lots of innocent people). In this season’s ninth episode, the show will take the unusual step of introducing a female unsub — and she sounds like Patrick Bateman’s twin sister. The character is described as a successful, extremely attractive thirtysomething career woman who is impulsive, emotional and prone to sudden rages. BONUS SCOOP: In the same episode, we will meet Rossi’s second wife in a circa 1994 flashback. Not sure what that’s about.

CRIMINAL MINDS

CRIMINAL MINDS revolves around an elite team of FBI profilers who analyze the country's most twisted criminal minds, anticipating their next moves before they strike again. The Behavioral Analysis Unit's most experienced agent is David Rossi, a founding member of the BAU, who is essential in helping the team solve new cases. The BAU team is lead by Special Agent Aaron Hotchner, a strong profiler who is able to gain people's trust and unlock their secrets. Other members include Special Agent Derek Morgan, an expert on obsessional crimes; Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid, a classically misunderstood genius whose social IQ is as low as his intellectual IQ is high; Jennifer "J.J." Jareau, the team's former unit liaison-turned-profiler; Penelope Garcia, the team's indispensible computer wizard who helps research the cases with her unique charm, and the team's newest member, Kate Callahan, a seasoned undercover agent whose standout work with the FBI landed her a coveted position with the BAU. As the team evolves together, the BAU continues its dedication to using their expertise to pinpoint predators' motivations and identify their emotional triggers in the attempt to stop them.

Watch an Exclusive Sneak Peek of Thomas Gibson's "Really Fun" Directorial Episode

Thomas Gibson's third stint in the director's chair on Criminal Minds turned into a family affair.

Not only is Hotch's (Gibson) son Jack (Cade Owens) back in the episode (Wednesday, 9/8c, CBS), but his real son, Travis, guest-stars in the episode, and his daughter, Agatha, makes a cameo as well as a trick-or-treater.

"Travis said to me after two days, 'Dad, can I go to school online and become an actor?'" Gibson tells TVGuide.com. "I said, 'It's not all riding bikes and egging houses!' That was as much fun as he has had and gotten paid for. ... Unfortunately, because the show is not for kids, they've seen very little of it. A couple years ago, I was coaching Jack's soccer team and I put Travis' name as one of the kids, so I said, 'Watch this soccer scene. Hey, Travis, I did that for you.' So this was cool. It was really fun for them and fun for me, which is weird to say for a really scary episode."

The episode takes the BAU to San Diego after a boy who had been abducted the previous Halloween reappears only for another boy, Hunter (Braden Fitzgerald), to disappear. Travis, 12, plays one of Hunter's friends. "He's not the unsub!" Gibson says. The unsub, though, is a young man who suffered a traumatic experience on Halloween at the hands of his father.

It's no accident that Gibson helmed the father-and-son-themed episode. Virgil Williams, who wrote the script, pitched the idea to him after they were both assigned the Halloween episode. "He wanted to do some of the best examples and some of the worst examples of fathers and sons," Gibson says. "The worst is obviously the case. And he wove in a really nice little thing, revisiting [Hotch's] home life with him on Halloween getting a costume [for Jack] with Madam Bouvier [Cornelius Jones, Jr]. That scene was so fun to shoot." (Watch an exclusive sneak peek of the scene below.)

After he got the script, Gibson, whose oldest son James shadowed him during prep, jumped at the opportunity to put his children in the episode. "I said, 'Hey, there's a part for one of the abducted boys' friends. I talked to Christina, my wife ... and we saw that it could work in one day. My daughter's actually walking up the sidewalk with a group of trick-or-treaters and the shot moves with her across the street and finds Travis."

Unlike his previous directorial efforts, Gibson appears heavily throughout the hour. "It was a little bit more challenging," he says. "For the most part, I prepared pretty well. You always learn from each one. Next time, if you're shooting over my shoulder, I could let my stand-in be the double and I can watch. For the most part, it was everything I wanted it to be."

The actor will don the director's cap again for the 16th episode later this season, to be written by — yup — Williams. "The dream team!" he says with a laugh. "It's very interesting. It's a prison story."

Safe to say that his kids probably won't appear in this one. "It's a prison. Hopefully not!"

Criminal Minds Exclusive: Ben Savage to Play Young Gideon

Gideon's back! Sort of. Ben Savage will play a young version of Mandy Patinkin's character on Criminal Minds later this season, TVGuide.com can exclusively reveal.

The 13th episode — which executive producer and showrunner Erica Messer co-wrote with star Kirsten Vangsness and previously described as a "love letter to fans" — will feature flashbacks to the early days of the BAU in the '70s when Gideon and Rossi (Joe Mantegna) first got their start. A present-day case will force Rossi to recall a case they had worked on back then. Robert Dunne, who played young Rossi in Season 8, will reprise his role for the flashbacks. The episode is currently slated for January.

"I've wanted to go back to how the BAU all started and now being in Season 10, it feels like it's time," Messer tells TVGuide.com. "I'm really excited about it to show our heroes from the beginning in the bomb shelter in Quantico. [Rossi's] memory drives us into the flashback, but it's also very reflective for the whole cast. It's not a typical episode."

Though Gideon's been mentioned on the show, this will be the first time a version of him has appeared onscreen since the second episode of Season 3, when he drove off into the distance, emotionally distraught and burnt out after his girlfriend Sarah was murdered and he had inadvertently caused Hotch's temporary suspension. The Homeland star infamously left the show over creative differences and was replaced by Mantegna.

Savage currently stars on the Boy Meets World spin-off Girl Meets World. His BMW father William Russ previously guest-starred on Criminal Minds in Season 7.

‘Criminal Minds’ Planted Spinoff Set By CBS, Will Air As Episode This Season

CBS, I find myself ignoring the network more and more because of all the spin-offs. It shows a lack of imagination and it shows the networks desire to play on the safe side. Sooner or later you're going to loose your #1 status with that combination.

They sorta skip the fact that "Suspect Behavior" probably shouldn't have gone to series because it was a dismal failure.

CBS is looking to launch another spinoff from a veteran crime drama procedural next season. The network has given the go-ahead to a Criminal Minds planted spinoff, which will air as an episode of the mothership series later this season. The episode, written by Criminal Minds executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer, will film in mid-February.

Like Criminal Minds, which centers on the FBI’s Analysis Unit, the spinoff will focus on a division of the FBI. It will follow FBI agents helping American citizens who find themselves in trouble abroad. Messer executive produces with Criminal Minds executive producer Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper of the Mark Gordon Co. Just like the original series, the spinoff hails from ABC Studios, where Messer is under an overall deal, CBS TV Studios and the Mark Gordon Co.

CBS first spun off Criminal Minds during the 2009-10 season, also as a spring episode of the mothership series written by then-Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero and Chris Mundy. The project, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, was picked up to series, which had a midseason run during the 2010-11 season.

So far, CBS has successfully launched spinoffs from CSI (2, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, with a third, CSI: Cyber, coming up this spring) and NCIS (2, NCIS: LA and NCIS: New Orleans). The only CBS planted spinoff of one of its established procedurals not to go to series was NCIS: LA offshoot NCIS: Red two seasons ago.

Now in its 10th season, Criminal Minds, created by Jeff Davis, continues to be among CBS’ strongest drama performers. Messer has been on the show since the beginning, rising to the ranks to executive producer/showrunner.
