Alrighty I've got the next part ready to go. I'm sorry it's taken this long, but RL can be a pain in the arse sometimes. Enjoy!
The sun streamed down on the pair as they made their way across the hot sand to the cooler, salty water. They stood there for a few minutes before Greg made a few sudden movements.
“I’m taking off my shoes, rolling up my pants, and going in. Coming with?” There was a glint of hope in his voice.
“I’m not big on the germ factor of the water, but by all means please go and have fun. I’ll be here sitting.”
Greg’s face fell a bit before he turned an ran full force into an incoming wave. Ryan knew that he had let his new friend down, but his OCD was kicking in big time.
As he sat and watched Greg play tag with some kids amongst the waves, Ryan felt his phone vibrate and was taken a back by the number that appeared.
“H, what can I do for you? And please don’t say another body guard job. I’ve had enough of that profession for a while.”
“No, Mr. Wolfe I’m actually calling to let you know that I expect to see you in the lab bright and early Monday morning.”
“Are you serious? They reinstated me? Wow. Yea I’ll be there on Monday. See you then. And H? Thanks for everything.”
“You’re welcome Mr. Wolfe and welcome back to the team”
Ryan clicked his phone shut and a huge smile spread across his face. Back to the lab was all that he wanted for the past few months and finally it was coming true. Someone upstairs sure was looking out for him, even if it was Stetler, someone cared.
Greg slowly made his way out of the water and back to where Ryan was and flopped next to the other man. Sand flew a bit with the force of Greg’s hitting the ground.
“After you dry off and loose the sand I have an idea of where to go for some lunch. How does Italian sound?”
“Anything sounds good right now, I’ve worked up quite an appetite with that swim.” He said laying back on the warm sand and closing his eyes, letting the sun start to dry him off and even a bit of color.
Forty five minutes later Greg’s clothes were dry enough that he could shake the sand off of his clothes, and Ryan was in the wake of the spray.
Ryan sputtered as he tried to talk. “Thanks I really needed another shower today.”
“Oh you liked it, besides we can always wash it out later.” A wink was sent the other man’s way as they headed towards the car.
The drive to the restaurant took a bit longer than Ryan had predicted, he forgot to account for the construction that was going on down the road at the marina. He gripped the steering wheel not wanting to show that the traffic backup was getting to him.
The blowing of a horn and a soft, sweet voice calling his name broke Ryan and Greg out of their trances.
“Hey Ryan, good to see you out and about. Horatio told me about Monday and I can’t wait to see you back in the lab. I’ve missed you!” The southern drawl was unmistakably Calleigh, and she was waving out the Hummer window on what seemed like her way back to the lab.
“Hey Cal!” He answered with a wave as the traffic started to move, thankful that she didn’t see how red his face was turning.
“Who was that hot lady back there? She was quite easy on the eyes. And what was she talking about a lab? I thought you worked at the gun range. Is there something that I should be knowing?” Greg raised his eyebrow and turn to the bright red Ryan.
“We’re here. I’ll explain everything when we get inside. And believe me it’s going to take a while so it’s a good thing they have slow service here.” He sighed as he parked the car, exited, and then held the door open for Greg and they plunged into the dimly lit restaurant.
The thick, red carpet squished under Greg’s feet as he followed Ryan and the host to a table far in the back away from the rest of the lunch crowd. They were seated and he picked up the menu only to be surprised to see that the prices were reasonable rather than sky high.
“Wow I thought with a place this nice I’d have to cut off a leg to afford it.”
Ryan laughed from behind the menu. “That’s why I like it here, it looks rich but is inexpensive and totally a great place to hide.”
“I can see why. Not that I want to push anything, but what was up back there in the car. You suddenly weren’t yourself.”
Ryan was about to speak when the waiter came over and asked if they wanted something to drink. They ordered their food right away to keep from being interrupted again. Then Ryan took a big breath.
“I should start by saying I used to be a CSI. The rest started when I couldn’t stop gambling. I was addicted so badly that I would go during work. Even made a drop off and was caught on camera by a private investigator following me. Then I was called in and all the cases I had worked on were going to be reevaluated, so I have to do all the paper work that went with it, then had to sit and wait until I heard whether I got my job back. In the mean time I have to make ends meet so I took the job at the gun range, even a short stint as a body guard. Then I got a call from my boss today telling me that I need to report back to work on Monday because I was reinstated. So that’s my story. I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you sooner, but it’s a bit painful as you can already tell.”
Greg sat there speechless, which was a rare occasion for him, normally he had words or a quick witted come back. But this time was different his feeling were involved. He had to choose his words carefully, and then the idea hit him.
“I know someone who had the same type of problem. His name is Warrick and he’s one of my co-workers back in Vegas. His was so bad that he skipped court to play Blackjack and even had a judge threaten him because he placed the wrong bet. He went to meetings and it was hard to co cases in casinos, but he’s beaten it. Just like I bet you have, I have a good feeling about you.”
“Good to know that someone believes in me. I know my co-workers do, they just tend not to show it as much. Look out here come the food.”
The waiter placed the heaping plates of pasta and sauce in front of them, left a huge chunk of real Parmesan cheese with a grater, and then left to refill the drinks.
“You weren’t kidding when you said this place was affordable. I think I could eat all of this in one sitting, or maybe two. Depending on how much I talk.” Greg laughed as he did his best to shove a huge fork full in his mouth.
“I usually come here twice a week, sometimes more if I’m not in the mood to cook. Or if there is someone special to impress.” He looked across the table and raised his eyebrow at the man turning as red as the sauce on the plates.
“Wow, I have no words to top that. Congratulations you have left me speechless twice in one day. That’s not an easy thing for anyone to do.”
“Good to know I have a lasting effect. What do you say we get out of here and just walk along the main street. I can point out some sights, plus walk off some of this pasta.” He said with a smile as they each pulled out money to pay their half of the check and waddled outside into the bright sun.
As they walked down the street the sound of sirens pierced the quiet street and not too long after the start of the sound, the CSI Hummer was screaming by with H at the wheel and Delko in the passenger seat.
Ryan had to stop mid step and fish his ringing cell from his jeans pocket.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Wolfe, I need you to get to the corner of Ocean Drive and Palm as soon as you can.”
“I’m near there but I have an issue. No kit and I have a friend with me.”
“We have extra kits. As for your friend, bring them along and leave them with Frank. We need all hands on deck.”
Ryan closed his phone and let out a huge burst of air not knowing how to tell Greg that their afternoon alone was about to turn into a three ring circus.
“Well I have good news and some bad news. That was my boss and he needs me to work a huge scene. Bad news is you have to sit with the resident Detective Frank Tripp when I’m working. I hope you’re not too upset. And I’ll understand if you want to go back to your hotel room and chill out.”
“I’ll come along. It’ll fun to see you at work. Besides I’m always working scenes it will be nice to be on the other side for a change.”
The two men climbed into Ryan’s car and headed for the scene, both not knowing what they were about to get into.
