In order to provide its television shows with less expensive music and generate digital sales, <font color=blue>CBS</font> will re-launch it’s old CBS Records label.
The newly revived CBS Records will pursue unsigned musicians who write and perform their own songs for use and promotion on primetime TV shows. In doing so, CBS will reduce licensing fees for using music from other labels on its shows.
CBS has inked a deal with <font color=blue>Apple Computer</font>’s iTunes online music service to sell the label’s music and videos, which will also be available at www.cbsrecords.com.
The new label has already signed three acts, including 2007 Grammy Award nominee <font color=yellow>P.J. Olsson</font, rock band <font color=yellow>Senor Happy</font> and <font color=yellow>Will Dailey</font>, whose song has been on the CBS show Jericho.
CBS Records dates back to 1938 and was one of the first companies to sell pre-recorded music. It has been home to top artists including <font color=yellow>Bob Dylan</font>, <font color=yellow>Tony Bennett</font, <font color=yellow>Aerosmith</font> and <font color=yellow>Bruce Springsteen</font>. CBS sold the label to <font color=blue>Sony</font> in the 1980s for roughly $2 billion.
