Being A Southpaw (a.k.a. Left-handed)

CSI Level Two
Anybody else here left-handed besides me? I think all my life I had to deal with being left-handed...It is difficult to say the least...I'm not sure most right-handed people would understand since most things in this world were created for right-handed people.

First of all, during my parents' generation, anyone who was left-handed was forced to use his right hand to write...My Aunt and Uncle were both forced to do so...I'm just glad my parents didn't force me, probably would have been traumatic to say the least.

That's just the tip of the iceberg...So my question is:

What are the disadvantages of being left-handed? Advantages?

I'm a leftie and damn happy with it.

The only thing I can do with my right hand is catch and use a computer mouse and knife.

First time I ever used a mouse, it was awkward to say the least since most are set for use by right-handed people...eventually, over time I guess I just got used to it...Now, I can't use the mouse with my left hand!

I love being left-handed, don't get me wrong but there are times that it can get frustrating!

I don't think I've ever gotten frustrated from a problem directly relating to my left handedness. No one ever made me use my right hand only.

I've never found it frustrating.

I think the only problems I've ever had is my hand getting wet ink on it if I'm writing.

mandy9587 I am left handed too
My dad is also and his left hand was taped down to force him to use his right hand.

In school, I had a second grade teacher force me to use my right hand, she would threaten the ruler ( I kid you not  ) if I used my left hand. Luckily my mom stepped in and the teacher was removed.

Using the mouse was difficult at first also, I wanted to reach across the keyboard.. but with practice I got used to using my right hand, typing was a challenge too

Anyone else?

Calihan, that happens to me too...I hate it when I get ink smudges on my hand! (neat-freak here, hahaha!) It's not that I was ever forced to use my right hand...It's got to do with the tools...For example, if the blades on a pair of scissors aren't sharp, I have a hard time using it and I have to ask someone else to cut it for me...Seems that scissors were made for right-handed people...Knives too and most power tools (which can be very dangerous for lefties!).

hhunter, luckily, in my case, I never encountered any teacher who forced me to write with my right hand...too bad about the ruler thing though...can't believe there are some people who still are in the Dark Ages about being left-handed...my Aunt and Uncle got whacked with a ruler but that was way back in the Fifties.

Where do you wear your watch? I've seen Eddie Cahill wear his on his right wrist. I put mine on my left wrist. I grew up with right-handed parents who taught me to put it on my left wrist...Besides, if I put it on my right, I wouldn't be able to adjust the dial on the watch.

The funny thing is, if you teach me to do things with my right hand, I usually get it...I learned how to play Golf at ten years old with golf clubs for right-handed people...I'm not comfortable using left-hand sets. :)

I am both left as right handed. I took my right hand to write because everybody used their right hand... took me some years when I was litte that everybody has a stronger hand... I can switch without to much problem to my left hand. without practising I can write with left and so on. Nobody does anythng weird like taping ones hand when being a lefty. It is fun because I also tried kateboarding for some years and there I am a regular and on my snowboard I am a goofy :p I also use my mouse on both sides of the keyboard. especially being at school and when we have some small spaces for the laptops and left is better.

Haha, I'm left handed, well mainly, I can do things with both hands, because I taught myself too, only I hate using my right hand, my writing is actually neater with my right hand, but that's because I have to slow down for some reason, so in the end it's neater. But I use my left hand most. (Except on the computer with the mouse, eating and catching things)

I think the only problems I've ever had is my hand getting wet ink on it if I'm writing.

That is the one thing I cannot stand! I would hand in papers at school, and the teacher would be like "I can't read this, you smudged all the ink on the paper" I eventually gave up and typed all my reports.

I only ever had a teacher tell me that writing with my left hand was dangerous  Apparently I was going to stab myself if I wrote with my left hand so I should write with my right hand...I have no clue how that works though. :p

I'm left-handed. I don't know where I get it from because both my parents are right-handed. Must be recessive genes or something. Anywayz, I've never found it a problem. The only thing is at school, we have to use fountain pens, so often the ink is smudged, but my teachers know i'm left-handed and are used to it. Mostly I type stuff anywayz.

I use the computer mouse with my left aswell. I've never found that a problem. The only thing I use my right hand for is using scissors. But, i'm also right-footed. No idea how that works.

I skateboard too, and I ride goofy. But a lot of my friends ride goofy and they're right-handed, they just find it more comfortable.

Anywayz, I like being a lefty, it makes me different. I like being different.

PSG xxx

I'm completely left-sided: left-handed, left-footed and apparently, left eye dominant (I've no idea what that means).

I have had some problems because of it. Like most of you said, I can't use fountain pens and such because of ink smudges, I have occasional issues with scissors and can openers, and as a guitar player, I hate the lack of left-handed guitars out there, but I kinda like being it, being in the minority and all.

I think it's interesting too. When I went to that strange "Bodies" exhibit, somebody told me that left handed people live on average 6-7 less than right handed people. There's all kinds of psychological stuff about it, like how we are more likely to be creative geniuses and our perception is different that right handed people.

I find it fascinating. Plus, it's kind of like a little club. I seem automatically endeared to other lefties, and vice versa. :)

Oh yeah, how can I forget...I also learned to play the guitar with a guitar made for the right-handed.

Interesting fact about the average life span of a lefty being 6-7 years less than that of a righty...Probably have something to do with the fact that most tools were created for comfortable use by a righty. Work place accidents anyone?

The weird thing is, my right hand grip is much stronger than my left. I open jars or bottles with my right hand.

Another thing, if I am sitting in a restaurant booth with other righties, I have to make sure I sit on the left side in order to avoid hitting a righty's elbow when eating.

Definitely, it's like being in a club. :)

Err I'm a North? paw. *ducks* Just thought I'd share a story. It's only short. :p
I had a friend who went to special lessons to teach her to write with her right hand. Her parents were ashamed of her or something. :( The lessons didn't work so she is a proud leftie now. :D
I do know that people say that left handed people tend to be better at sports. :)
Another thing, if I am sitting in a restaurant booth with other righties, I have to make sure I sit on the left side in order to avoid hitting a righty's elbow when eating.
My maths buddy was left handed, she had to sit on the left, if we forgot it got rather annoying.

Yeah, most of my friends at school are right-handed, so I always have to watch where I sit so as not to annoy people.

Steps in to say Hi and ask that you be kind to me. I'm right-handed but my Mom and a brother-in-law are left-handed :) My mom went to school in the 1930's and the school tired to force her to write right-handed but gave up. She was a hopeless case  My mom avoids the ink smears because she writes back-handed. We grew up in a right-handed house and the only time my mom's left-handedness was an issue was when she was cutting unsliced bread :) I think my two sister, my brother and I have all picked up left-handed tendencies from my mom though.

Hey Jacquie, righties are welcome here! :) I was just curious but how does writing backward work for your Mom?

As for using a knife...that's an issue for me sometimes, especially when the knife is dull...being that most knives were designed for right-handed people...So I always have to go to Solingen to have our knives sharpened.
