Anthony Zuiker Weighs In On Procedural vs Serial Debate

CSI Files

Captain
Anthony Zuiker, creator of CSI revealed recently why the show works better as a procedural than a serial.

"We simply did not want to handcuff the viewers to their television sets from week to week," he said. "We wanted to make great television, earn the viewers' trust and welcome them back 24 times a year. What works best for CSI and many procedurals today are "stand-alone" episodes with serialized character arcs. This lessens the pressure of the viewer to tune in every single week, yet encourages loyal viewing by serializing character beats."

Zuiker also said procedurals works better for viewers who can't watch every single episode. "We'd rather have you watch 20 or 24 rather than miss two shows in a row and tune out forever."

Rick Kushman, TV critic for the Sacramento Bee, says procedurals are more accommodating, but serials allow for better writing and tend to be the series that most grab viewers' attention. "Serials let writers tell better stories. They offer the size and depth of a novel."

"Serials open all kinds of doors," he continued. "Plots can twist, split, then sprint forward. Mysteries can expand and venture into new, unexpected territory, like, uh, hatches. Characters can grow, adapt, slowly get flushed out in all their complexities, or get whacked -- R.I.P. half the characters on 24."

Hahahaha, definitely have to agree iwth that 24 line - I couldn't believe how much of the cast they killed off this season (god, nevermind the whole season - how about JUST THE FIRST EPISODE?!)

But on a CSI note, the procedural aspect I like - it's a drama that I don't mind watching reruns of! I'm a pretty loyal follower of 24 and ER, but I can't watch reruns of them because I know where the character storylines are going and such, it just doesn't hold my interest... and the comment about missing two and tuning out forever - gotta say, I find that true. I missed two episodes of Lost a few weeks ago, and still haven't gotten around to finishing the season.

CSI reruns never cease to entertain me, regardless of the season. :)

^^^ That's an excellent point, cyoko1003- I never considered why I can't really watch reruns of serial type shows; it does make a difference that stuff always has to run in order, and you know what's going to happen to a character's specific storyline down the road, so it's not as interesting. With CSI, I can pull out any episode on DVD and feel like I'm getting something complete, and yet still entertaining.

hey cyko1003 I never thought about it like that but now that you mention it I gotta agree with you and Baba . I too never could understand why I couldn´t watch some reruns and you make a good point. and I agree on the "miss two episodes" thing too.. prison break and lost to say a few..

thank god for good old csi that never ever end being entertaining no matter how often you watch the same episodes.
