CBS News will launch a second season of 48 HOURS: NCIS, a six-part series that gives viewers unprecedented access to the dramatic and shocking cases handled by the real-life U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service, on Tuesday, May 22 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

48 HOURS: NCIS takes viewers inside the difficult cases faced by NCIS agents, who investigate murders, track killers and use the latest technology to solve cases that once seemed unsolvable. Rocky Carroll, star of CBS' drama series NCIS, returns to narrate the new season.

The new season of 48 HOURS: NCIS explores a range of intriguing investigations, including one that takes agents into the dark world of master and slave role-playing. Agents also reveal the techniques they used to bring to justice a serial rapist, show how they tracked a killer in the reinvestigation of a cold case, and go step-by-step into a twisted case where the victim was lured to his death by a killer in a case of mistaken identity. The series also focuses on the unique relationship between NCIS agents and local and other law enforcement agencies, as they worked together in their search of the truth.

"The NCIS agents live and breathe these complex cases," says Susan Zirinsky, Senior Executive pProducer of 48 HOURS: NCIS. "You can hear and feel the emotion as they go through these investigations, clue-by-clue, tip-by-tip, until they can get answers for loved ones and themselves. They take these cases personally because they are investigating what led to very bad things that happened to fellow members of the military or their families, or serious crimes committed by members of the Marines or Navy."

In the Season 2 Premiere, NCIS agents detail the hunt for a serial rapist in Jacksonville, N.C., who appeared to be targeting women with military connections. Five of them were spouses of Marines and Navy personnel attached to Camp Lejeune. NCIS formed a joint task force with the Jacksonville Police Department, who were able to connect the attacks. The rapist left behind few clues, and it wasn't until two victims were attacked on the same night that investigators were able to get their first major leads.

With the help of those two victims, the task force was able to apprehend him before he could strike again.

The United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service is responsible for investigating felony crimes, preventing terrorism and protecting secrets for the Navy and Marine Corps. The agency operates from more than 140 locations around the world and aboard every aircraft carrier and big-deck amphibious assault ship at sea.

"These agents say they speak for the victims who can't speak for themselves," Zirinsky says. "The agents are committed to solving these chilling, once-in-a-lifetime cases."

48 HOURS: NCIS is from the award-winning team behind 48 HOURS. Susan Zirinsky is the Senior Executive Producer, and Anthony Batson is the Executive Producer. Asena Basak is the Producer. Phil Tangel and Marlon Disla are the Producer-Editors. Grayce Arlotta-Berner, Faith Jones and Paulo Bolivar are the Editors.

When a young Navy officer vanished without a trace along with $8,600 from a supply ship during the Vietnam War, he was classified as a deserter and a thief. But his family believed something sinister happened. Can NCIS agents solve a decades-old cold case?

NCIS agents reveal the hunt for answers in the disappearance of payroll officer Andy Muns, the organization's oldest cold case, in 48 HOURS: NCIS: "A Sailor's Honor," to be broadcast Tuesday, May 29 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

48 HOURS: NCIS is a six-part series from the award-winning team behind 48 HOURS that takes viewers inside the difficult cases faced by NCIS agents, who investigate murders, track killers and use the latest technology to solve cases that once seemed unsolvable. Rocky Carroll, star of CBS' drama series NCIS, narrates each edition.

In 1968, Muns was a 24-year-old payroll officer aboard the U.S.S Cacapon, stationed in the Philippines, when he mysteriously disappeared. He was never seen nor heard from again. The Navy investigated, but he was classified as a deserter and a thief.

"He would have never taken that money. It just didn't make sense. We knew that something bad had happened," says Mary Lou Taylor, Muns' sister. "Somebody killed my brother."

Three decades after her brother went missing, Taylor tracked down the original Naval investigator who admitted he had been haunted his whole life by this case. He told her he believed something terrible had happened to her brother, but he couldn't prove it. The investigator would become part of her efforts to convince NCIS to reopen the case.

In 1998, Taylor got a call from Pete Hughes, then head of the NCIS cold case squad.

"She had explained to me certain things she had done on her own and just hearing that just screamed she needed assistance," Hughes says.

"There's no evidence. There's no crime scene. There's no witnesses," says retired NCIS Special Agent Jim Grebas. "This case was unsolvable. But one thing about Pete and I, we had a good track record for solving the unsolvable."

The agents began by tracking down crewmembers of the U.S.S. Capacon, specifically focusing on anyone who might have made odd statements about Muns after his disappearance.

That led them to Michael LeBrun, who originally told investigators that Muns may have gone scuba diving and drowned, which raised a red flag for the agents. Trouble is, Muns was last seen at midnight, meaning if LeBrun's theory was correct, Muns went diving alone in the dark. "That's not gonna happen," says Hughes.

"I cannot tell you what happened," LeBrun told the agents during an interrogation, to be broadcast on 48 HOURS: NCIS. "If I tell you what happened, I'm gonna be making something up."

But suddenly, LeBrun surprised the agents with a new theory. One where he might have played a role in Muns' disappearance.

Was it the clue the agents needed to bring charges and restore honor to the fallen sailor?

When a young military wife goes missing, the investigation into what happened takes NCIS agents into the dark world of master and slave role-playing, in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "A Date with Evil" to be broadcast Tuesday, June 5 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime case," says NCIS Special Agent Jeff Kierman. "Some of the darkness and some of the twisted motivations behind this case – it was overwhelming."

At the time of her disappearance in April 2012, Brittany Killgore was 22 and living alone in San Diego County, Calif. Her husband, stationed at Camp Pendleton, was deployed to Afghanistan. Her family and friends say their relationship had issues and she had filed for divorce.

One the eve of moving back home, Killgore reluctantly agreed to go out on a dinner cruise with Louis Perez, a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps. He promised her that if she did go out with him, he'd have some of his Marine pals there the next day to move her out, according to her best friend. Perez also had a girlfriend, which complicated the situation. Before agreeing to go, Killgore wanted to get approval from Perez's girlfriend, which she got.

Killgore was last seen getting into Perez's vehicle. Within 10 minutes of closing the door, she texted a friend the word "Help." She never made it home.

"Louis Perez had a dual life," says Brian Patterson, the lead detective on the case for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"Brittany was never going to get on that cruise," says Patterson.

NCIS agents and San Diego County sheriffs formed a joint task force to find Brittany. The investigation was soon focused on the bizarre role-playing relationship between Perez and his girlfriend, Dorothy Maraglino, and another woman, Jessica Lopez, who was Maraglino's slave. They found damning evidence in a dungeon in Maraglino's home, in Perez's car and in a hotel room where Lopez apparently tried to commit suicide. There was also a detailed seven-page letter with key information about Killgore's disappearance.

"I will never understand why she didn't listen to her gut. Evil doesn't look like evil," says Michelle Wrest, Brittany's mother.

"She was just a kid...she wasn't a wild kid, she wasn't a party kid, she was a kid," her father, Darryl Wrest, said.

Erin Corwin was just 19 when she kissed her husband goodbye and said she was heading to Joshua Tree National Park to scout out hiking trails. The morning of June 28, 2014 was the last time her husband, Corporal Jon Corwin, saw her alive.

The investigation into what happened to Erin Corwin after she left home would expose a secret affair between two neighbors in the Marine Combat Base in Twentynine Palms, Calif. It would also take months of painstaking investigative work to get answers – and closure – for Corwin's family members.

"This isn't a case. This is not a number – this is a human being," says NCIS Special Agent Clifton Randolph in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "The Marine's Wife," to be broadcast Tuesday, June 12 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. "You can't forget that this person has a family, has a husband, has a mother. They wanted to know where Erin was. And you can't forget it."

48 HOURS: NCIS is a six-part series from the award-winning team behind 48 HOURS that takes viewers inside the difficult cases faced by NCIS agents, who investigate murders, track killers and use the latest technology to solve cases that once seemed unsolvable. Rocky Carroll, star of CBS' drama series NCIS, is again the narrator in the second season of the series.

Initially, investigators turned to Erin Corwin's husband for answers. There were questions about why he waited 24 hours to report her missing. However, Jon Corwin passed a polygraph test, and digital evidence led them to believe he had been on base the day his wife went missing. He was not considered a suspect.

Meanwhile, base commanders flooded Joshua Tree National Park with troops to help look for her in temperatures that reached as high as 115 degrees.

"It's a lot to take in, especially from probably your least adventurous child – a child that you would probably never expect something like that to happen to," says Lore Havelin, Corwin's mother.

Investigators learned Erin Corwin wasn't going to scout trails that day, but rather to meet a married neighbor, Corporal Chris Lee. They allegedly had fallen in love after Erin had a miscarriage. Corwin had befriended Lee's family, even becoming a babysitter for Lee's daughter. Her car was found abandoned far from the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. She was nowhere to be found.

An NCIS specialist would conduct a digital forensic analysis of Erin's social media accounts and would soon learn that Erin had told a friend in Tennessee about the affair, and Erin had confided to her that she was now pregnant and the father was Christopher Lee.

Two months after Erin Corwin disappeared, her body was found dumped in one of the more than 1,000 abandoned mines in the unforgiving desert – a discovery, Erin's mother said, that "was like finding a needle in a thousand haystacks."

How did she get there, and who would kill Corwin? And could NCIS agents track down the killer?

"I think agents become so attached to these cases because it's such a huge investment," says NCIS Director Andrew Traver. "It's not a 9-to-5 job. It takes so much focus, so much energy to stay on some of these cases, to follow them through the end."

48 HOURS: NCIS -- "The Marine's Wife" is produced by Paul LaRosa. Laura Ramirez is the field producer. Michael Baluzy, David Spungen, Karen Brennan and Gregory Kaplan are the editors. Marlon Disla and Phil Tangel are the series' producer-editors. Jonathan Leach is the coordinating producer. Asena Basak is the development producer. Rob Klug is the director. THE SEARCH FOR A MARINE WHO FAILED TO SHOW UP FOR ROLL CALL LAUNCHES NCIS AGENTS INTO A WORLD OF CALLS AND TEXTS, A RELATIONSHIP BUILT ON LIES, AND AN ILL-FATED CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY IN "48 HOURS: NCIS -- DEADLY LIES"

When a Marine failed to show up for roll call at the Navy Marine intelligence training center at a naval base in Virginia Beach, friends and co-workers had a sense that something just was not right. Justin Huff was a good Marine, they say, and he would never leave without permission.

NCIS agents take viewers into the search for Huff, which launched them into a world of a woman's secret identity; a relationship built on lies; catfishing, where a person pretends to be someone else; and an ill-fated case of mistaken identity, in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "Deadly Lies" to be broadcast Tuesday, June 19 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

"In this job we see a lot of good, we see a lot of bad, but this one always takes you back to why," says NCIS Special Agent Bill Elflein. "Why be so random and so devastating?"

48 HOURS: NCIS is a six-part series from the award-winning team behind 48 HOURS that takes viewers inside the difficult cases faced by NCIS agents, who investigate murders, track killers fugitives and use the latest technology to solve cases that once seemed unsolvable. Rocky Carroll, star of CBS' drama series NCIS, is again the narrator in the second season of the series.

NCIS Agent Maureen Evans says it seemed that Justin Huff just disappeared. "It's almost like he stepped out for a minute."

Huff never returned.

"And Justin Huff was a good person – he was a decorated Marine," Elflein says. "He fought for his country in two tours in Iraq. He was a loving husband and a soon-to-be father."

The investigation would uncover a videotape of Huff leaving his dorm in the middle of the night. Agents would also learn he got a visit from someone purporting to be an NCIS agent who wanted to talk with him about a sexual assault.

Soon the investigation would lead to Cooper Jackson, a Navy intelligence specialist. Jackson and Huff didn't know each other but were connected in a way NCIS agents say they never could have predicted. There was a woman who called herself Samantha, who had built a persona by using suggestive photos of a petite blonde woman she pulled from the internet – to lead others on.

Jackson, NCIS agents found out, was smitten with Samantha.

Could Huff somehow have gotten caught up in that web of lies?

"We could not find a correlation between Samantha and Justin, and that's what we needed to investigate," says Elflein.

"I think Samantha was the catalyst for this whole tragedy," says Don Marcari, Jackson's attorney. "But for her, none of this would have happened."

What did happen? In addition, who is Samantha?

NCIS agents reveal their methodical approach to the investigation and finding out where Justin Huff went the night he left his dorm in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "Deadly Lies."

48 HOURS: NCIS -- "Deadly Lies" is produced by Alec Sirken. Ken Blum, George Baluzy, Faith Jones, Mike Vele and Grayce Arlotta-Berner are the editors. WHEN A MILITARY NURSE FAILS TO SHOW UP FOR WORK, WORRIED FRIENDS RUSH TO HER APARTMENT ONLY TO FIND HER HOME BURNED AND THEIR FRIEND MISSING

WAS SHE THE VICTIM OF A SERIAL KILLER TARGETING MILITARY WOMEN, OR WAS THERE ANOTHER REASON SHE VANISHED?

When Army nurse Holley James Wimunc failed to show up for work at the maternity ward of the hospital on Fort Bragg, worried friends began to call around to find her. They then headed to her apartment in Fayetteville, N.C., where they found the smoldering remnants of a fire – but no sign of their friend. Was she the latest victim of a serial killer targeting military women, or was there another reason for her disappearance?

There were suspicious signs at the scene, however, according to NCIS agents who reveal the investigation into what happened to Wimunc, in 48 HOURS: NCIS -- "Trail of Fire" to be broadcast Tuesday, June 26 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

"I will never forget this case because of all the things Holley was – someone's daughter, someone's mother, a nurse and an officer in the United States Army," says retired NCIS Agent J.C. Hawks.

Investigators noticed knives were missing from her kitchen and that a piece of carpet from her bedroom had been removed.

"You got the sense immediately that, yeah, something very bad happened inside that apartment," says Hawks.

"Carpeting soaks bodily fluids. It soaks all types of physical evidence," says Hawks. "Carpeting is good to conceal something, to roll something up. Nothing good in our minds came from that missing carpet."

Wimunc was 24 and married when she vanished on July 9, 2008. She was also the mother of two children from a previous relationship. She lived in an apartment near the hospital where she worked at Fort Bragg, while her husband, Marine Corps Corporal John Wimunc, lived at Camp Lejeune, two hours away in Jacksonville, N.C.

John Wimunc told investigators he didn't know where his wife was and had not talked to her the day she went missing.

Tenants in the building where she lived also reported seeing a man dressed in black running from the area of her apartment and getting into a black pickup truck. It was also a bad summer for local police and NCIS agents in Fayetteville, N.C., who were already dealing with other unusual military murders.

Investigators wondered if they had a serial killer at large after receiving a letter from someone influenced by the infamous Zodiac killer. This copycat Zodiac killer said he was inspired to kill a female soldier whose body was found in a local hotel one month before Wimunc vanished.

On July 14, 2008, Wimunc's charred remains were found in a wooded area near Camp Lejeune. An autopsy would reveal Wimunc was shot and dismembered.

The investigation would uncover a maze of evidence that included a jealous ex-girlfriend who had resurfaced; a lying but loyal Marine willing to help a wartime buddy; and a husband with a history of domestic violence. But, why would any of them want a beloved nurse dead? Hawks was determined to find out.

"Our real primary responsibility is to protect the war fighter, and that extends to protecting dependents," says NCIS Director Andrew Traver. "And we take that very seriously."
