‘CSI’ Versus ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Where Does The Showdown Stand Mid Season?

CSI Files

Captain
CSI creator Anthony Zuiker shares his take on the competition between top-rated shows, CSI and Grey’s Anatomy. With the season half over, both shows are still going strong.

CSI leads in total viewers, while Grey’s Anatomy wins out with the all important 18-49 demographic. Though at last weeks People’s Choice Awards, CSI suffered a blow when Grey’s won Best Drama.

“I think it was a very smart move by ABC and (president Stephen McPherson) to put one of their best shows up against one of the best shows on CBS,” says Zuiker. “Two, three, four great shows can co-exist on the same night.”

Despite all his success, Zuiker feels he’s still one of the most down-to-earth guys in Hollywood. “My life runs where it’s like I’m on top of the world and then I get one really big slap across the face every couple of months that reminds me, ‘You’re still the guy playing pinball and picking up dog crap in the backyard. Don’t forget that, Anthony.’”

Grey's just won the Golden Globe this week, too. It's an incredibly hot show. But, I think CSI is doing extremely well given how popular and "in" Grey's is, and also the fact that CSI is in its seventh year. It's also having a great season creatively, which doesn't hurt.

I'll second it. Right now, the cast is why I'm watching GA - so far, the writing has been subpar on that show this year. But CSI? I'm dying to see each new episode - everything's on; casting, acting, direction, dialogue, storylines... everything.

Re: ‘CSI’ Versus ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Where Does The Showdown

Here is my take: When Grey's ran on another night, in it's first season, I wateched it. I guess I was hoping for a little bit more like the first season of ER. As the season progressed and the characters pretty much paired off, I got a turned off on the whole thing. By the start of this season, they had reached the level of pure pap soap opera.

It is high quality pap, and judging by the awards, a well loved piece of pap, but for me certainly not classic TV that we will look back on in 10 or 20 years when the reruns are running on A&E or FX and go "wow". I suspect it will be more like ER, sort of sunk off into the distance.

Hey Greys stayed on another night, I might actually still watch it. But they are competing with CSI, and the first 48 (on A&E) during that time slot (and the 3 hour shifted slot) so sadly, Grey's loses.

I suspect the people who picked one side or the other will make up for it by watching the other show in the summer. I think you will see CSI with significantly better ratings over the summer than Grey's, which I don't think bears repeat viewings as well.

I wonder if the current brouhaha over Grey's (y'all know what I'm talking about, right?) will make any difference to the ratings?

Re: ‘CSI’ Versus ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Where Does The Showdown

i dont watch greys, but ive read all about the incident on gossip sites. a lot of people are really ticked off, but are they angry enough with the guy to stop watching the show? i dont know. most of the people who write the articles i read want him fired and his character replaced with a new actor. if that does happen im not sure if it will have positive or negative effects. only time will tell on this one

Re: ‘CSI’ Versus ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Where Does The Showdown

All comes back to the same thing: As long as they spell the name of the show right and say what night it is on, then it is a good thing overall. The number of peed off people who tune out won't compare to the number of people reading about it that might never have heard of the show.

However, the real life drama takes away from at least one character's ability to be convincing, and I think that might hurt things over time. I give it about a 25% chance that he is a gay character by the middle of next season.

Re: ‘CSI’ Versus ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Where Does The Showdown

I think the rating system is so inaccurate. When there are 2 shows on at the sametime that you both watch, no one stops watching one of those shows. You will record one! That is why this competition thing is so dumb.
