Unidentified bone found in backyard

Hi,

This is going to sound really strange, but I was hoping since everyone watches CSI and I think I remember some people here may be studying Criminal Justice, I was hoping someone could help me. My stepmom was watering our backyard today and she found a piece of jawbone that had been pushed up underneath a cactus. The jawbone had teeth in it, but we don't know if it is a dog because there are no canines. We both watch CSI everyday and she knows everything about animals, but we don't know what it is.

Could someone maybe try and identify this bone for me so we can rule out it being anything other than a dog? Here are some pictures we took. I think I am supposed to only post six picture links, so I will post the pictures I think best show the bone.

Thank you, anyone, and if this wasn't the right place to put this, I apologize and the moderator can feel free to remove this or lead me to the correct place!

I'm not an expert, but to me the teeth bones look like some I've seen from some bull skulls, so it could be something like a bull or a cow, but like I said before I'm no expert :)

Well, I'm definitely not an expert in bones, but it really looks like a dog bone, if not some sort of animal. From my limited knowledge of anatomy I got in high school, I would say it looks a little big to be human. But I don't know.

If you're really freaked out about it, try checking to see if there's been any missing persons in your area.

when you see it compared to a dollar bill, it is much too small to be a bovid (cow etc) but the shape of the molars is suggests it is a herbivore of some kind. dont have my mammalogy text with me, so cant tell you any more than that.

If you have a college biology department teacher or a vet near you, they might be able to tell you.

Thanks, everyone, for the help! I am not too worried about the bones. I looked at a picture of a human jaw bone and I don't think that is what it is. The house I'm in is at least 50-60 years old and the cactus the bone was under is about 20 or so years old, so the bones are about the same age. The pet hospital we take my dog to is right across the street from where I work so I will take my camera down there tomorrow and ask them.

Thank you again! :)

Geez, this sounds vaguely familiar and like the old "weird bizzare news" we used to have on this site" and wow that is freaky!
