I meant Police Badges not CSI ID Badges, sorry :p

I'm not sure about Nick but during Season 1 Sara had an ID tag that said "SAN FRANCISCO POLICE"

OT: GregNickRyanFan, may I ask who that is in your avatar because it reminds me of James May from "Top Gear"

Oh, okay. I don't know about that. I never paid much attention to Ecklie's badge enough to know if it was different from the CSI's badges.

I thought I remembered Sara having been a cop too, but wasn't sure.

It's Christian Kane who plays Eliot Spencer on TNT's Leverage. :)

Ecklie does wear a badge like Brass'. You could see it in last night's episode. However, I think he's a cop like Brass was a CSI.

Catherine has a sewn-on black and white patch that looks like a badge but it says CSI across the middle.

    Alrighty then :)

In Vegas CSIs are not cops, they are civilians, however I believe they are required to carry guns in Vegas (not positive, though).

The crime lab falls under the Under-Sheriff's responsibilities. Ecklie is now the Under-Sheriff so that would make him a cop, BUT in reality I highly doubt he would have been made Under-Sheriff without being cop trained.

Vegas is unique in the way that it has CSIs who are civilians.

Most places the CSI is a detective (or possible a police officer) with forensic training.

Remember CSIs ONLY process the crimes scene, gather the evidence and turn it into the lab. They do not actually process the evidence, like it is shown on TV.

Yes, Nick was a cop before turning to forensics, so he reallly does know how to clear a place, etc. Though as a CSI, no he shouldn't be doing that.

Sara was never a cop but worked for the San Francisco Police Department.

Just like CSIs in Vegas work for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

They carry IDs, but probably not badges. Though on the show I believe they have badges.

And there, my friends, is class for today. :D

Not all CSIs on the show actually carry guns (Grissom, Greg, and Ray have all made comments about not carrying at times, although at other times all three did); however they do seem to be required to be trained to use them to be in the field (Nick in Harvest; Ray in No Way Out).

As Nick said in Shock Waves, they're not cops, so they don't have badges, just IDs. I know, it was a scene with Bieber, so maybe people have blocked it from memory. :D

Yup, but what happens on the show and what happens in real life are two completely different things. ;)

Just looked and a 'marginal function' with crime scene analysts is: Qualify with departmental weapon

Doesn't say if carrying a gun is required, but it sounds like. Ah hell, who knows.

Oh, I also found that they have:

    Crime Scene Analyst I
    Crime Scene Analyst II
    Crime Scene Analyst Supervisor

    No level III :D

Here's the link if you want to see the job descriptions. :)

The original CBS profile for Nick had him as a police officer in Texas before switching to CSI in Texas and then a CSI in Vegas. But remember the original profiles seem to be ever changing to fit current needs! Example - Nick's birthday changed months for Turn, Turn, Turn. (Heck! His original profile has him blond, with a tattoo, coming from Nebraska (I think?), and him and Warrick not getting along.)

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (wikipedia entry)

They've gone through a restructuring recently!!! :shifty:

If we want to get closer to real life...
Ecklie's job doesn't exist any more. The position of undersheriff was disbanded at the retirement of the last undersheriff.
It also says that the Undersheriff is appointed from the highest civil service rank of Captain. So, if I'm reading this right, you would have to be at least a police Captian (Brass!) to be appointed Undersheriff in which case Ecklie would not be able to be Undersheriff. Everybody confused now?
And if anybody wonders the CSI's are "Technical Services Division" which puts them under the 'Assistant Sheriff for Law Enforcement Services' (there's also the Assistant Sheriff of Law Enforcement Opperations and Assistant Sheriff of Law Enforcement Investigations). Doesn't say anything about if they're still considered civilians.

By the way - for Sophia to become Deputy Chief she at some point had to become Captain first. Now she outranks Brass. :)

They all have IDs, not badges (if you look close it just says CSI). Ecklie MAY have a badge, but it's a separate thing and comes with UnderSherriff (which no longer exists IRL, but actually WAS a position once).

Basically, they live in Made Up Las Vegas ;)

I think it is different in every city. I know here Crime Scene Investigators are strictly for collecting evidence. Funny enough I found this job posting for one here in my city.
    Be a CSI

CSIs only collect evidence. The evidence is sent to a lab where specialists process it.

Considering that most CSIs are actual cops or detectives they wouldn't have time to process the evidence.

At least that job posting sounds less scary then the LVMPD job description.

So...in real life, CSIs are cops in Las Vegas but on the show CSIs aren't depending on the episode. Well, that isn't confusing. I guess I'll have to think of the CSIs as scientists that sometimes like to carry guns just in case the writers need them to.
I felt so stupid watching that promo, vegaslights, because I didn't realize that until I already had posted. When I saw the clip of Sara running down the hospital hallway I was like, "Yeah, this is going to be an awesome season! Sara's running down hallways! Get the bad guys, Sara!" until I realized it was all old clips.:p

Nope, CSIs in Las Vegas are civilians, not cops. :)

In other cities CSIs are usually cops or detectives with forensic training.

    It depends on the city.

I'm really looking forward to the first three episodes based on the spoilers so far. ;)

Oh, me too! I can't wait

I recently changed from a Blackberry to an Android phone, so just for fun I put a little count-down widget on one of my home pages that shows the days until CSI  :p
