The Best Sara/Grissom Songs #2

If you haven't noticed, I'm a big Alanis Morissette fan.

I like to think of Sara and Grissom's relationship as it is now when I hear this one. It's more positive and fun than the others I posted, and it really could be sung by either one of them; in many ways they are so much alike. I'd like to think we are out of the dark/angst phase of their relationship and into the lighter/fun/in-it-to-win-it phase. One where they accept and support each other, always. Of course, it would be nice to see it on screen every so often. :)

Everything
Songwriter: Alanis Morissette

I can be an asshole of the grandest kind
I can withhold like it's going out of style
I can be the moodiest baby and you've never met anyone
Who is as negative as I am sometimes
I am the wisest woman you've ever met
I am the kindest soul with whom you've connected
I have the bravest heart that you've ever seen and you've never met anyone
Who is as positive as I am sometimes

You see everything you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can't relate
And you're still here

I blame everyone else and not my own partaking
My passive aggressive-ness can be devastating
I'm terrified and mistrusting and you've never met anyone
Who is as closed down as I am sometimes

You see everything you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can't relate
And you're still here

What I resist persists and speaks louder than I know
What I resist you love no matter how low or high I go
I am the funniest woman that you've ever known
I am the dullest woman that you've ever known
I'm the most gorgeous woman that you've ever known and you've never met anyone
Who is as everything as I am sometimes

You see everything you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can't relate
And you're still here

Good one.

I realize now what happened with my last song. There are two versions, each with a different first verse. I just combined them into one in the second posting without knowing it.

This has been one of my favorite songs since I heard it years ago, and I always think of Grissom and Sara whenever I listen to it, when they were together on the show, and especially now. :) Since Grissom travels so much I think he appreciates more than ever that Sara is his 'home'.

Feels Like Home
by Bonnie Raitt/song by Randy Newman

Something in your eyes makes me wanna lose myself,
Makes me wanna lose myself in your arms.
There's something in your voice makes my heart beat fast.
Hope this feeling lasts the rest of my life.
If you knew how lonely my life has been,
And how alone I felt for so long.
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along,
And change my world the way you've done.

Feels like home to me, feels like home to me,
Feels like I'm all the way back where I come from.
Feels like home to me, feels like home to me,
Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong.

A window breaks down a long, dark street,
And a siren wails in the night.
But I'm alright, 'cause I have you here with me.
And I can almost see through the dark there's light.
If you knew how much this moment means to me,
And how long I waited for your touch.
If you knew how happy you are making me --
I never thought I'd love anyone so much.

Feels like home to me, feels like home to me,
Feels like I'm all the way back where I come from.
Feels like home to me, feels like home to me,
Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong.

This one could easily apply to Sara in season 8.
I saw OTR in concert last year. This is such an achingly beautiful song:

Latter Days
by Over The Rhine

What a beautiful piece of heartache
This has all turned out to be
Lord knows we've learned the hard way
All about healthy apathy

I use these words pretty loosely
There's so much more to life than words

There is a me you would not recognize, dear
Call it the shadow of myself
And if the music starts before I get there
Dance without me, you dance so gracefully
I really think I'll be okay
They've taken a toll, these latter days

Nothing like sleeping on a bed of nails
Nothing much here but our broken dream
Oh, but baby, if all else fails
Nothing is ever quite what it seems

And I'm dying inside to leave you
With more than just cliches

There is a me you would not recognize, dear
Call it the shadow of myself
And if the music starts before I get there
Dance without me, you dance so gracefully
I really think I'll be okay
They've taken their toll, these latter days
They've taken their toll, these latter days

Tell them it's real
Tell them it's really real
I just don't have much left to say
They've taken their toll, these latter days
They've taken their toll, these latter days

Not many TV shows I care about right now, so it's been a summer of music. And AM has a new CD. :)

From an empowered, and healed, season 9 1/2 (and beyond) Sara...to Gil:

"Guardian"
by Alanis Morissette

You, you who has smiled when you’re in pain
You who has soldiered through the profane
They were distracted and shut down

So why, why would you talk to me at all
Such words were dishonorable and in vain
Their promise as solid as a fog

And where was your watchman then

I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian
I’ll be your warrior of care your first warden
I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand
The greatest honor of all, as your guardian

You, you in the chaos feigning sane
You who has pushed beyond what’s humane
Them as the ghostly tumbleweed

And where was your watchman then

I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian
I’ll be your warrior of care your first warden
I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand
The greatest honor of all, as your guardian

Now no more smiling mid crestfall
No more managing unmanageables
No more holding still in the hailstorm

Now enter your watchwoman

I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian
I’ll be your warrior of care your first warden
I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand
The greatest honor of all, as your guardian

Another great GSR song from my playlist:

When It Don't Come Easy
by Patty Griffin

Red lights are flashing on the highway
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home tonight
Everywhere the water's getting rough
Your best intentions may not be enough
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home tonight

But if you break down
I'll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I'll try to remind you
Stay by you when it don't come easy

I don't know nothing except change will come
Year after year what we do is undone
Time keeps moving from a crawl to a run
I wonder if we're gonna ever get home

You're out there walking down a highway
And all of the signs got blown away
Sometimes you wonder if you're walking in the wrong direction

If you break down
I'll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I'll try to remind you
And stay by you when it don't come easy

So many things that I had before
That don't matter to me now
Tonight I cry for the love that I've lost
And the love I've never found
When the last bird falls
And the last siren sounds
Someone will say what's been said before
It's only love we were looking for

But if you break down
I'll drive out and find you
If you forget my love
I'm gonna try to remind you
Stay by you when it don't come easy
When it don't come easy

This might just be the ultimate GSR song:

The Promise
by Tracy Chapman

If you wait for me
Then I'll come for you
Although I've traveled far
I always hold a place for you in my heart

If you think of me
If you miss me once in awhile
Then I'll return to you
I'll return and fill that space in your heart

Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I'll find my way back to you
If you'll be waiting

If you dream of me
Like I dream of you
In a place that's warm and dark
In a place where I can feel the beating of your heart

Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I'll find my way back to you
If you'll be waiting

I've longed for you
And I have desired
To see your face your smile
To be with you wherever you are

Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I'll find my way back to you
Please say you'll be waiting

Together again
It would feel so good to be
In your arms
Where all my journeys end
If you can make a promise
If it's one that you can keep
I vow to come for you
If you wait for me

And say you'll hold
A place for me
In your heart.

A place for me in your heart.
A place for me in your heart.
A place for me in your heart.

Don't think I could ever top The Promise as a tribute to GSR, but here is one that could fit Sara in Season 4. It's not my favorite season, since it was so angsty for my favorite character, but this is a lovely song by the incomparable Trisha Yearwood that might help define Sara's downward spiral during that season. (Thankfully, she rebounded in season 5; and, as they say, the rest is history. :)):

Trying To Love You
by Trisha Yearwood

I blew out all my plans
The world fell in my hands
The day that I began
Trying to love you

The secrets I have kept
The nights I haven't slept
I've laughed until I wept
Trying to love you

Trying to love you...No one's come as close or gone so far
Trying to love you...I've lost and found myself in who you are
Trying to love you...So easy and so hard, trying to love you

I watched myself get stuck
Squandered all my luck
Almost given up
Trying to love you

Trying to love you...It broke my heart, it's chipped away my pride
Trying to love you...Everytime I'd see that faultline slide
Trying to love you...I've crossed the great divide trying to love you

Trying to love you...I've screamed your name, I've slammed a thousand doors
Trying to love you...I've worn a million miles across the floor
Trying to love you...Still I could not ignore trying to love you

It's pulled the best from me
For all the world to see
I guess I'll always be
Trying to love you

And now one from Grissom's POV:

If There Hadn't Been You
by Billy Dean

A man
Filled with doubt,
Down and out
And so alone.

A ship
Tossed and turned,
Lost and yearning
For a home.

A survivor
Barely surviving,
Not really sure of his next move.

All of this
I would've been
If there hadn't been you.

If there hadn't been you,
Where would I be,
If there hadn't been you,
Here for me?
I made it through times
I never would've made it through,
If there hadn't been you.

A man
Filled with hope,
Who finally knows
Where he belongs.

A heart
Filled with love,
More than enough
To keep it strong.

A life
That's alive again,
No longer afraid
To face the truth.

All of this
I would've missed
If there hadn't been you.

If there hadn't been you,
Where would I be,
If there hadn't been you,
Here for me?
I made it through times
I never would've made it through.

If there hadn't been you
On my side,
You
In my life,
All my dreams
Would still be dreams,
If there hadn't been you.

All my dreams
Would still be dreams,
If there hadn't been you.

This is Grissom's song, and probably defines him best after 'The Happy Place': overthinking and confused, remorseful, and ultimately just wants to start over again with Sara.

The Scientist
by Coldplay

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you, tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets and ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming up tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

So tell me you love me, come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
Oh, let's go back to the start

Who knew Bob Dylan could write such a beautiful love song; his genius knows no bounds.
This song has been covered by many wonderful singers, most notably Adele and Garth Brooks. My favorites: Joan Osborne and Kelly Clarkson.

This one is Sara's POV; fits best in the early seasons before the angst-filled season 4. Or possibly season 5. Anyway, it's pre-canon, sometime before Grissom acted on his true feelings.

To Make You Feel My Love
by Bob Dylan

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shatters and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven’t made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I’ve known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong

I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue
I’d go crawling down the avenue
There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rollin’ sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain’t seen nothing like me yet

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn’t do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love

This is another fav on my GSR playlist. It could fit at various times in their on-again-off-again relationship, but maybe especially in season 9 when Grissom decides to go to her.

Somewhere Only We Know
by Keane

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

So if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
So why don't we go

This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know

This is another one I relate to GSR whenever I hear it, in Grissom's POV:

The Reason
by Hoobastank

I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why I need you to hear

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

In honor of what's rumored to be a 'Rat Pack' episode of old LV being filmed on CSI, I thought I'd post a song from that era; after all, great love songs are timeless. And, can't you just see Grissom singing this to Sara in CSI:The Musical? ;):

All The Way
by Frank Sinatra

When somebody loves you
It's no good unless he loves you - all the way
Happy to be near you
When you need someone to cheer you - all the way

Taller than the tallest tree is
That's how it's got to feel
Deeper than the deep blue sea is
That's how deep it goes - if its real

When somebody needs you
It's no good unless he needs you - all the way
Through the good or lean years
And for all the in between years - come what may

Who knows where the road will lead us
Only a fool would say
But if you'll let me love you
It's for sure I'm gonna love you - all the way
All the way

So if you'll let me love you
It's for sure I'm gonna love you - all the way
All the way

Another awesome song for Grissom and Sara:

Far Away
by Nickelback

This time, this place
Misused, mistakes
Too long, too late
Who was I to make you wait
Just one chance
Just one breath
Just in case there's just one left
'Cause you know, you know, you know

That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me
and you'll never go
Stop breathing
if I don't see you anymore

On my knees, I'll ask
Last chance for one last dance
'Cause with you, I'd withstand
All of hell to hold your hand
I'd give it all
I'd give for us
Give anything but I won't give up
'Cause you know, you know, you know

That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me
and you'll never go
Stop breathing
if I don't see you anymore

So far away, far away
Been far away for far too long
So far away, far away
Been far away for far too long
But you know, you know, you know

That I wanted
I wanted you to stay
'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say

I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long
So keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and never let me go
Keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and never let me go
Believe it
Hold on to me and never let me go
