CSI Files
Captain
A man's obsession with young girls may prove to be his downfall in this heavy episode of CSI: New York, "YoungBlood."
In the 6th episode of the season, Mac, Danny, and Lindsay investigate the death of 43-year-old Wes Kinney, a parking lot owner who is found shot to death in his apartment. Whoever murdered Wes must not have been too experienced, as they left various pieces of themselves behind, including an iPod with the letters MSD engraved in the back. The suspect also seems to have a liking for the musical Oklahoma, as the iPod is filled with songs from the show. But in a city where musical theatre aficionados are plentiful, Mac and his team know they have to approach the case from a different angle.
The evidence leads Danny and Lindsay to Dwight School, where they're getting ready to perform the musical Oklahoma. There, they meet MSD, otherwise known as 18-year-old Melanie Dobson. Though Melanie admits Wes was her boyfriend, she denies causing him any kind of harm; they'd simply gone out to a bar called Nabokov's the night before. Afterwards, Melanie followed him up to his apartment to drink a little champagne, nothing more. Lindsay is unsettled by the idea of a teenager frequenting bars with a man old enough to be her father, but Melanie shrugs it off. In fact, everybody's doing it, she claims. Though Melanie may have been the last person to see Wes alive, it seems to Danny and Lindsay she had no motive to murder her "boyfriend."
The two CSIs decide to concentrate their efforts on Wes's business life. They find Wes had an affinity for getting into altercations with Oscar Bower, who owned the building next to Wes's parking lot. Oscar doesn't try to hide his feelings – a lot of people are glad Wes is dead, especially Oscar himself. Seems that with Wes out of the way, Oscar is free to take over the parking lot business. It sounds like motive to Danny and Lindsay, except Oscar has a strong alibi – while Wes was getting shot he was at Nabokov's, and the waitresses can vouch for that. However, when Danny attends the bar and finds out Wes and Oscar used to make a sport out of wooing young girls, the investigation takes a disturbing turn. The evidence brings Melanie Dobson back to the picture, but does Melanie's toughened exterior make her capable of murder, or is she just a lost little girl trying to find validation in the wrong place?
Meanwhile, Stella and Dr. Hawkes team up when a young man is found dead in a Central Park lake, his body tied up. They identify him as Wayne Harding, but is Wayne a victim of murder? Though his autopsy reveals he died of natural causes, the ropes that bind his body suggest murder. The ME also found Wayne ate an hour before his death, and based on the where the body was found, Stella quickly plans a visit to the famous Tavern on the Green in Central Park.
The night shift waitress remembers Wayne well; he ate there with two young men and a woman just the night before. But something happened during the course of the meal, the waitress tells Stella, and Wayne stood up abruptly and left. Stella wonders what Wayne ate the night before, but the waitress denies the implication that the restaurant had something to do with Wayne's death. The Tavern on the Green, after all, is not just another hole in the wall. In fact, the restaurant kept a record of Wayne's culinary requests – apparently Wayne was allergic to sea food. The pieces of the puzzle are starting to fold into place, but if Wayne had an allergic reaction to the food, how did his body end up in a lake and tied up with ropes? Surely Wayne's dinner companions can provide the answer to that question.
