Hi I’m Tali Stokes, I’m 25 and I have a twin brother called Dallas, which seems to be a stupid name since we live in Texas but it’s what our birth parents named us. Yep that’s right we were adopted but not as infants but as 2 year olds.

Jillian and William aka bill Stokes adopted us even though they had several kids of their own running around. Most of the time it was just me, dal and Nick; the three musketeers. Well that was until Nick went to College then he came back to work in the DTPD (Dallas Texas police department) before leaving to live in Las Vegas. From the day I could remember I have been calling Jill and Bill, mom and dad or mom and judge. They are all the parents I have ever known.

I found out when I was 17 that I was adopted after my ex-boyfriend crashed the car we were in and put the both of us in the hospital, where Nick’s work mates had to do an SATs kit on me. I remember the day because after I got out of hospital I was taken down to the police station and comforted; god lucky dad had been called by Nick or else who knows. Dad explained everything to the officer and then took me home and called a family meeting before explaining that Dallas and I were adopted into the family because they didn’t want us to be in a group home even though our older brother and sister was and our mother was in prison for killing our father, even if dad said she should have not had to kill him for the police to notice the abuse he was aiming at the whole family. I think that was the only time I ever asked dad and mom about my real background.

Dallas left when he was 18 to join the marines, he’s been there ever since and is based in Washington. He has a daughter back here he has never meet who’s mother died in childbirth. I’m Lexie or should say Alexis’s auntie and legal guardian and I just got out of a messy divorce in which I won. I got all my ex-husband had after the divorce because a stray bullet that happened when he was leaving a football game killed him. But the money doesn’t matter to me when it comes to family, Lexie and I live in the guest house on the ranch and help out on the running of the ranch as well as teaching some classes at Lexie’s school. Lexie is 6 but like me at that age, she is two grades ahead so she is in classes with 7 & 8 year olds.
So what has been happening recently is I have been able to locate Laura, my birth mother. Still where she was when the Stokes adopted Dallas and me. Her name was Laura Ann Sidle (nee McJay), she married a guy called Michael Jonathan Sidle before having a son called Benjamin Sidle and then a Daughter called Sara Ann Sidle before Dallas and I were born some ten years after Sara. A sister we haven’t seen since that day when Laura killed Michael after all the time with the abuse. So from now on in this story what happens from now on, from my point of view. The date is 1st of July; it’s summer break and the end of the school year. The last day of school for Lexie at The Hockaday School before we move to Las Vegas.

Present day:

I drove up to the school yard and parked before heading to the adminstration office. The deputy dean was the first person I saw as I headed in to clean out my locker before picking up Lexie and heading back to mom and dad’s place.

“Tali it’s been good having you her.”
“Thanks I’ve had fun.just need to get away for a bit, go see my brother Nick in Las Vegas and see what work I can go there.” I replied as I reached the paper work I needed to sign off.
“Do you know where you’ll be sending Alexis?”
“A good school called D'Vorre & Hal Ober Elementary School”
“Yes i’ve heard of it. My brother is the principal, i’ll send him Alexis’s papers. I’ll make sure you’re final pay goes thru.”
Money wasnt something i was worried about. I have plenty of it, not much of it was from mom and dad but it was from when i was playing poker and from both the bar & the clothing store i owned in town. Something Dad would be keeping an eye on for me.

I nodded and headed to clean out my locker.
The locker room was empty, mainly because most of the teachers were in class for the next 5 minutes.
Took out the dallas cowboys jersey out and opened the redbull before downing it.
As I walked out an older girl whom I had taken for the parenting class “Ms Stokes”
“Ms”
“Jessie Hanel. You’re leaving?”
“spending some time with my brother and see what happens. What are you going next year?”
“I got into Western LVU. Studying physics”
“We’ll I might see you around Vegas. That’s where we are heading.”
“Have fun Ms Stokes and I might see you around” She said as she walked off.

I continued down the hall to the 3rd grade classroom that Lexie was in.
I knocked on teh door before her teacher opened the door.
“Hello Ms Stokes. We’re just having a farewell party for Miss Alexis. We’re going to miss her, she’s one of the smartest girls of her age that I have had the pleasure to have taught.”
“Thanks Mrs Samson. I have done well with her education then. We’ll miss you too!”
I walked over to the group where Lexie was, she was filling in the little book I had given to her so that she could keep in contact with her friends.
I let her spend as much time with them before the bell went or she came over to me.

It was when the bell rang when she skipped over to me.
“Hey mommy” She said. Ever since she could talk, she had been calling me Mommy. Even though she recently found out I was actually her Auntie.
“Hey Munchkin. You get your bag and stuff, so we can go see Nana and pop”
