Hi guys well i will just introduce myself my name is James nice to meet you all :) My question...Iam thinking of getting into forensic science and have a bit of a bad habbit yeah thats right I smoke ciggarettes :confused: I was wondering if you think you can still get a career even if you smoke I know that because in some jobs people look at you differently when you smoke??? let me know what you think maybe im just asking stupid questions :)]

My understanding is that in the EU you can be discriminated against hiring if you smoke. In the USA that is not the case. I know plenty of people in forensics who smoke.

That's not quite true. In some jobs, for example medecin, you could be discrimateed as they consider wrong for a doctor to be telling people to stop smoking and then nipping out between every appointments to go smoke. But in other job paths, it doesn't matter whether you smoke or not. In anycase, too many people smoke in the EU to discriminate them... :lol:

Even doctors smoke, and nurses too.
 
Fair does ( very interesting article by the way) But I guess the difference lies in what the companies CAN do,...and what they actually do. I know that in France or in England, too many people smoke for companies to be able to refuse smokers. Some might do, but I've never heard of employers refusing someone because they smoke. At least in France, there is a strong feeling that smoking is a private business, and that employers should not be aloud to ask if one smokes or not.
 
plenty of people who are professionals smoke, i work in a hospital and not so many doctors smoke, but most of the nurses do, its against any law to discriminate against smoking, whatever job you do, smoking is legal, as long as its on your own time.
