Summary: What if Sara had a child? How would Grissom react? Will he be able to bond with the child when he realizes he can no longer live without her?

A/N: Probably slightly AU.

Chapter 1

Sara Sidle sat in her apartment watching the child do their homework. She did wonder sometimes. What if things had happened differently?

She was 21 when she gave birth. She had just finished her Bachelors in Physics. Of course she was scared, a young mother always would be. But she wouldn’t have it any other way now. She had a beautiful daughter, with many similarities to her mother. Yet she had the personality of her father.

The child’s father, Sara didn’t wish to remember him. He was gentle, Sara made sure after her childhood that she would never date a man with a possessive demeanour. But, an awful thing occurred that stole his life. She missed him of course she did, he was her daughter’s father. Life had to move on though, and now she had fallen hopelessly in love with her boss.

The girl sat silently, her brow knitted in a deep concentration. Sara smiled; she looked so much like herself. A worry kicked in though.
Not one of her friends knew of the child. Sara didn’t know how to tell them. Catherine Willows was the only team member with a maternal side, and Sara had never once shown to them she had maternal instincts. Every time she had work, she would always have an old friend who knew about the child look after her. This was the only area Sara was unconfident in.

She had tried to tell them, well Catherine, a few times, but never managed to get the words out. She thought that if she did tell her, that their friendship would grow a little bit. Yet, she never did, and the strange thing was, both Catherine and Sara’s daughter’s attended the same school.

The small preteen whizzed around grinned at her mother: “Finished.” She stated happily.

“That’s good. Did you find anything difficult?” Sara asked.

“Nope, everything was easy.”

“Ok then. You can do what you want now, within reason of course.”

“Mom, I’m not that stupid.”

Sara giggled: “I know Olivia.”

Olivia shone the same 1000 watt smile that came from Sara at her, and ran to her bedroom.

Sara sighed and moved to her kitchen. She knew she had dinner to make for Olivia, but also knew she had work in a few hours.
She grabbed her phone and gave a quick call to her friend, Lily Adams. She had been Sara’s friend since preschool and was really the only person who knew about Olivia:

“Hello?” said the woman on the other end on the line.

“Hey Lily, are you able to take Olivia tonight?”

“Yeah of course I can. I love having her over, and c’mon Sara I’m your friend. It’ll be good to have some young blood to teach my husband a lesson.”

Sara laughed: “Uh huh. Well I bring her over in an hour or so. See you then.”

Lily said her goodbye and she hung up. Sara finished cooking her daughter dinner and they sat down to eat.

Olivia seemed to want to bring something up but kept her mouth shut. Her mother noticed this, but knew she had to let Olivia come to her:

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“You know at the lab, would I be able to visit?”

“Visit for what sweetheart?”

“I don’t know... the science labs? I want to see what they do.”

“Well, I don’t think you’ll be allowed but I could ask for you.” Sara wanted her child to be ambitious, and she certainly was. She knew Olivia loved science, biology mainly, and would want to see the DNA labs.

“Really? Thanks mom.” The excitement in her daughter’s voice made Sara’s heart lurch with happiness.

“I’ll try. I didn’t and am not making any promises.”

“I know.”

Sara wondered how her boss would react if she asked if Olivia could take a tour. Even he, Gil Grissom, didn’t know she had a child. Again, she had tried to tell him, but feared his reaction.

Olivia knew her mother was in love with a man at work. She had seen the photographs scattered around the house. She knew it was her mother’s boss; she wanted to see him in the flesh. She desperately wanted a father, she had never known hers.

Sara had told her that her father was a good man. That she loved him and still did, but now after such a long time without him, it was slightly different. Olivia understood. She knew that life had to move on and that her mother couldn’t put her life on hold.

Sara had given her pictures of her father, which she kept in photo frames and her favourite, the one with him and her mother standing together smiling, under her pillow. She didn’t feel her mother was betraying him by being in love with another man, Sara told her that is what he wanted.

Grissom and Catherine both noticed Sara’s manner change around this time of year. She seemed in a way depressed, yet coping with it. It was strange. They couldn’t understand what was causing it. Though, they didn’t want to go digging into her personal life either.

They kept a special yet secret watch on her around this time. If either person noticed something going on, they discussed how they should address it. They never spotted Sara in distress however, but still agreed to watch out for her.

Grissom worried about Sara, something was clearly bothering her yet after all he had done to her, she barely trusted him with her secrets anymore. He wished he could change that. He spent hours on end trying to figure out ways to make it up to her, make her trust him again. But each idea he could think of was not enough for her in his mind.

He just surveyed her from afar, trying to formulate a plan. Always around the middle of the year she grew depressed, yet a few months later she perked up a little bit. He knew she was hiding something, only he didn’t know what.

Chapter 2

Sara arrived at work feeling run down. Tackling a preteen daughter and crime scene investigation was a tough job; she sympathized with Catherine a bit. Lindsay was entering a rebel phase, Sara thanked her lucky stars Olivia wasn’t doing the same thing.

Yet, another reason was causing her exhaustion. This was the time of year she dreaded. Her daughter always asked questions at this time, due to the fact that Sara seemed to be grieving. Olivia knew something awful had happened to her father, but she also considered she may not want to know. Sara had told her she would explain what happened when she was older. Sometimes that wasn’t enough, yet Olivia understood why her mother said this.

She wanted to protect her, spare her the pain of knowing what happened. Sara did tell her one thing; that she saw the whole thing.
Olivia looked up at the woman looking after her. Lily was her mother’s good friend, and she knew her father:

“Lily?”

“Yes dear?”

“You knew my dad right?”

“Yes sweetheart, I knew your father. Why?”

“Mom doesn’t really talk about him. I know it hurts her, but I would like to know some things and you are not as emotionally involved.”

“Well, I guess not as much as your mom no. Ok ask your questions. Not many though, some things should be left for your mother to answer.”

“What was his name? You know full name? Not just the name I here mom mumble when she is upset.”

“What do you know?”

“I know his first name is Jake, but not much else.”

“His name was Jake Garcia, sweetheart. His was four years older than your mother and they had been together until the day he passed.”

Olivia stayed silent for a few moments, but then spoke up again: “What did he do?”

“You wanted to ask something else, but I can sense you want your mother to answer that huh?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Ok, he was a police officer, and a damn good one.”

“How long were they together for?”

“Mm, I don’t know if I should answer that sweetie.”

“Please?”

“They were together for six years. He died when you were a year old.”
“Ok, that will do.”

Olivia spent the rest of the night silent. She hoped her mother could get her into the lab. She wanted to see the man her mother was in love with.

Grissom sat the entire beginning of shift in his office. He desperately wanted to help Sara through whatever was happened to her. When he noticed her walk down the hallway in front of his door he got up and followed her.
He made sure to follow yet keep some distance between them. He watched as she entered the locker room, he took a quick detour into the DNA lab to fetch some results before going to check on her. He thought it best to let her settle into her routine before disturbing her.

He sauntered into the locker room at a leisurely pace. When he stepped in, he couldn’t see her. That is when he heard very quiet sobbing coming from the back of the room.

He quickly turned the corner and found her there, her head in her hands, her shoulders slumped and shaking with the sobs that racked her body. His heart broke. Why was she so upset? He had to find out now.

He slowly walked over to her and sat down beside her. She sensed him and tilted her head upwards to glance at his eyes with her red and puffy ones. They were full of worry:

“Oh Sara, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing...I’m fine...just uh, just hormonal.” She stuttered. Grissom knew she was lying.

“No, something’s wrong. You’re hurting and badly.” He clutched her hand.

“It’s just a piece of my history that’s resurfacing. I’m ok.”

“You are not. C’mon, let’s go to my office. Talk to me.” He pulled her up and led her to his office, she followed, hesitantly but she still went with him.

“Sara you really need to tell me what’s wrong. Honey you’ve been so depressed lately.” Grissom said when they entered the room.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get on your nerves. I’m always depressed, how about we leave it at that!” She snapped.

“Hey, I’m not mad at you. Settle down.” He sat her on the chair opposite his desk. “Now, tell me what has been bothering you.”

“I don’t know how you’ll take it.”

“Try me Sara.”

“I have...I have a child ok? Her father, her father died when she was a year old and...and I have been struggling.”

Grissom sat there in shock; he never suspected that Sara could have been a mother. He decided to listen though, let her tell him what she needed to get off her chest:

“Of course I cared for him, loved him...but times have changed and life moves on. But I still can’t help but grieve.”

“Of course you can’t. He was the father of your child.” He soothed.

“I was scared of how you would take this.”

“Sara, the only thing that bothers me is that you didn’t tell me sooner. Keep going; get it off your chest.”

“Well, his name was Jake Garcia... we had been dating for six years when he was killed. He... was four years older than me and we didn’t exactly plan Olivia, but she happened. I wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world.”
Grissom listened carefully. He heard Sara’s maternal instincts flow in her words. She, in a way, reminded him of Catherine. She wasn’t much like her, but the maternal side was identical.

He again clasped her hand as she spoke, re-living the horror of what must have happened to him. He wasn’t angry with her, or jealous as it were, he knew she had to have a life before Vegas:

“You wouldn’t mind if I meet Olivia would you?”

Sara was momentarily stunned by this: “No... No of course you can meet her. She wanted to come to the lab anyway, to see the labs. I didn’t know what you would say.”

“If she’s interested I wouldn’t see the harm on giving her a guided tour.” He smiled at her.

Sara smiled back; she felt good knowing that Grissom now knew of Olivia. She now had no secrets from him, and that made the weight on her chest lift slightly. She still had to tell the team, but they could know later:

“So, when you are at work... who takes care of her?” He asked.

“A friend that moved to Vegas before I did. We’ve been friends for years.”

“How old is she?”

“Uh... about the same age as Lindsay Willows. I was young, I admit. We should have been careful, yes, but again I wouldn’t trade her for anything.”
